Book Synopsis Frinton and Walton by : Norman Jacobs

Book excerpt: Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze have been bound up with one another for many years, together with the associated villages of Great Holland, Kirby-le-Soken and Kirby Cross. A century and a half ago, they were all small agricultural villages, but for Frinton and Walton, the change since that time has been dramatic. Frinton became a select resort for those in pursuit of a quiet vacation, while Walton, in contrast, catered with its pier, cinemas and amusement arcades for a livelier, family holiday. Change has been more gradual in Kirby and Great Holland.

Download or read book Youth at the Gate written by Ursula Bloom and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The touching true account of a young woman's life on the home front during the First World War. Ursula Bloom movingly describes how the Great War forever changed the lives of ordinary people in Britain. When Ursula says goodbye to both her suitor and brother as they go to war, patriotic excitement soon turns to worry and despair. This memoir vividly brings to life the experiences of people struggling to live through World War I. Ursula Bloom's honest and heartfelt story shows us the challenges of food rationing and the constant bombing by Zeppelins overhead. Rumours of German spies abound, and even Ursula and her mother find themselves under suspicion by their neighbours. Ursula's autobiography also looks at the realities of life in the early twentieth century, when operations were carried out on the kitchen table, a pregnant woman shouldn't be seen in public, and an officer and a private couldn't mix under the same roof. Not only the realities of war force an innocent Ursula to grow up. She must face her mother's serious illness, the demons of her husband-to-be, and the snobbery of his wealthy family. There are lighter moments too, such as the tale of the Bloom's fictitious maid, Emily, who they have to invent rather than admit that they can't afford a servant. Ursula Bloom went on to become a bestselling novelist, playwright and journalist. This moving autobiography is a must for all of those interested in life at home during the Great War, as well as for fans of her novels, such as Wonder Cruise.

Book Synopsis Essex at War, 1939–45 by : Frances Clamp
Download or read book Essex at War, 1939–45 written by Frances Clamp and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much maligned, Essex is a vibrant county with a long and exciting history. Being close to the Continent and with one of Britains longest coastlines, it was an obvious target for invasion as the threat of war grew. Many defensive structures were built by the sea and to protect major routes across the county. The remains of pill boxes can still be seen.Essex at War 1939–1945 tells how war greatly affected the county: children were evacuated both to and from Essex; being close to London the county suffered from regular air attacks; farming was important and the Womens Land Army arrived in force. Accounts of Essex airmen and sailors who supported those escaping from Dunkirk are told, and once the USA entered the war there was a new type of invasion in the county when their servicemen arrived and were welcomed at many of the countys airfields.Memories of children growing up during those difficult years are recalled. These include nights spent in cold, damp Anderson shelters, sleeping under solid tables or in claustrophobic Morrison shelters. We learn about disrupted school lessons and the fear felt when the air raid siren wailed. When the V-1 and V-2 unmanned flying bombs were launched in 1944, many still remember listening for the engines to switch off and counting the seconds until they fell to earth.
Book Synopsis The Thames Ironworks by : Brian Belton
Download or read book The Thames Ironworks written by Brian Belton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the heart of London's East End, the Thames Ironworks might be described as characteristic of the industrial and social landscape of the Victorian era. This successful enterprise, headed by the respected Hills family, undertook projects in shipping, civil engineering, electrical engineering and motoring. But as well as providing employment, the ironworks was also central to the social lives of its workers. Its football team, founded by Arnold Hills in 1895, was destined to become world famous as West Ham United. Author Brian Belton explores how the Victorian values of commercialism, religion, philanthropy and patriarchy that made this giant of industry a success were inextricably linked with a sense of fair play, competitive spirit and the growth of football as a national obsession. Peppered with the songs and memories of a treasured cockney region, this is an entertaining portrait of ships, industry, sport and, most of all, the people of the Docklands communities that relied on the ironworks for their daily bread.

Book Synopsis Clacton-on-Sea and the Surrounding Coastline in the Great War by : Ken Porter
Download or read book Clacton-on-Sea and the Surrounding Coastline in the Great War written by Ken Porter and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clacton-on-Sea and the surrounding coastline is part of the Sunshine Coast, an area of sandy beaches and low-level cliffs facing the North Sea. This book gives a brief history of the major nearby villages Brightlingsea, St Oysths, Clacton on Sea, Holland on Sea, Frinton and Walton on the Naze as they developed from agricultural areas, to seaside resorts in the mid to late 1800s, and then into heavily defended hives of activity. They were considered by the authorities to be convenient spots for foreign invasion and, as a result, mock invasion exercises at Clacton had taken place since the early 1900s. Being close to the sea, many of the inhabitants were heavily involved with yachting and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, so it's not surprising that a great number joined the Royal or Merchant Navy.Brightlingsea became a major naval port and the Australian and New Zealander's Engineers trained there for four years. Clacton itself saw over a 1,000 men sign up, and it also had a number of Military and Convalescent Homes that treated injured men. Middlesex Hospital, for one, treated over 9,000 men. The local villages produced a considerable number of men who were awarded the Military Medal/Cross, and Walton on the Naze produced one VC in Herbert Columbine. The tremendous efforts of others are also covered, in particular those of the local women folk. A number of appropriate poems, many written at the time, are included throughout the book, as well as rarely seen photographs and insightful reports from the local papers of that period.
