Even so, her parents provided her with an environment that enabled her to thrive. In Making Friends with Other Trees and Flowers, Janne relates with humor and honesty how a vivid imagination made it possible for her to understand the blurred images of her world. She shows how disability, when coupled with creativity, can provide chances for boundless fulfillment. About the Author Janne Irvine, pianist and musicologist, holds degrees from Sarah Lawrence College and the Yale University School of Music. Her doctor of musical arts is from the University of Arizona in Tucson where she has lived since 1974. "Janne has provided us with an insightful, inspirational, and evolutionary journey of triumph over challenge which demonstrates that in many ways she has better vision than most of us." -- Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States "A must-read for parents of blind and low-vision children." -- Kathryn Hume, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, Pennsylvania State University

MY FLOWER FRIENDS introduces 12 unique characters - African Violet, Bella Begonia, Rose, Cary Carnation, Trudy Tulip, Lily, Daisy, Sunny Sunflower, Maria Marigold, Iris, Wally Golden Wattle, and Pansy - illustrated as amusing caricatures with very human personalities. Each flower originates from one of the Earth's continents (except Antarctica) and faces difficult challenges as it meets another flower from a different part of the world. The flowers have qualities and ideas, derived from their ancestral traits and life experiences, which help them adapt to new environments and unusual situations. These six ORIGINAL stories - Be Yourself, Destiny's Friendship, A Chance Encounter, Friends for Life, A Lasting Impression, and Friends in Common - are for children of any age and recount how the flowers gradually form friendships in spite of differences in their origin, family, setting, size, color, type, age, gender, abilities, etc. Each story ends with a moral about life or friendship that can easily relate to human friends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. William Dean Howells has written many books of several kinds which have entertained a great many people of all kinds, but no single book of any kind in which his various talents appear to such advantage to themselves and enjoyment of their readers as in his 'Literary Friends and Acquaintance', which, briefly described as a personal retrospect of American authorship, is in reality a series of portraits and miniatures of American men, women and, figuratively, in some cases, children of the pen, a gallery of literary likenesses, drawn from life, with a skillful but kindly pencil, and in the light that lingers like a halo around their lessening memories. Mr. Howells divides his retrospects into eight parts, and being personal they are in a sense chronological — successive records of his autorial career, the steps of his journeys into the domain of authorship, and his impressions of certain of their inhabitants, of their individualities — their work, or play, or whatever else seemed to distinguish them at the moment from the profane or vulgar, who did not write for fame, or scribble for bread. The headings of these parts, or chapters, are indications of these journeys, which were eastward, Mr. Howells' course of empire reversing that of Bishop Berkeley, which took its way westward, the first being entitled '"My First Visit to New England," the second "First Impressions of Literary New York," the third and fourth "Roundabout to Boston" and "Literary Boston as I Knew It," and so on through separate personal chapters devoted to Holmes, Longfellow and Lowell, the last being a gathering-in of Mr. Howells' "Cambridge Neighbors."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shockingly honest, richly detailed, and pulling no punches, Friends and Enemies traverses the highs and lows of Barbara Amiel's storied life in journalism and high society. From her early childhood in London during the Blitz to emigrating to North America and her rise to the top rungs of journalism; to her four husbands and other assorted beaus both famous and not; and right up to her marriage to Conrad Black and their prolific legal battles against the powerful and vengeful American justice system, Barbara Amiel's life has been as dramatic as it is glamorous. She has been called every conceivable name in the book by the media (and authors of unauthorized biographies about her), pilloried for her extravagant lifestyle and sometimes regrettable quotes to the press ("My extravagance knows no bounds," for instance, to Vogue), not to mention her outspoken conservative political views as stated in her weekly newspaper columns around the world. It's no surprise she remains to this day a subject of utter fascination after over four decades in the public eye. But until now, very few people actually know her real story—the break-up of her family when she was a child, her bouts of debilitating depression and other chronic health issues, her thoughts on feminism and #MeToo, her travels with the international jet set and A-list celebrities, and, of course, her unvarnished views on the trial and conviction (since overturned) of Conrad Black and the iron-clad bond they have shared since they were married in 1992. Whether you are an admirer or critic of Amiel’s, you will be completely engrossed in her operatic life, one that seems ripped from the pages of a scandalous novel. She also distinguishes herself as a woman well ahead of her time—the first female editor of a national newspaper in Canada, she challenged the sexual mores of society while also angering the feminist establishment. She has certainly had many friends and enemies over the years—Henry and Nancy Kissinger, Elton John, Tom Stoppard, David Frost, Anna Wintour, Oscar de la Renta, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, Marie Jose Kravis, to name but a few—and she brings these personalties into the spotlight in this larger-than-life memoir that is sure to cause a sensation with readers everywhere.
