Book excerpt: The freshwater diatom flora from arctic and subarctic regions of North America remains poorly known. The aim of this investigation is to improve our knowledge of diatoms in lakes from eastern subarctic Canada, and to provide a stronger foundation for the use of diatoms in limnological and palaeolimnological studies. To this end, we analysed the modern diatom assemblages in surficial sediments from 123 lakes in northern Québec and Labrador. The two study transects in Jamésie-Hudsonie (data set including 59 lakes and 38 environmental variables) and in Québec-Labrador (data set consisting of 64 lakes and 29 environmental variables) extend over a vast area from the boreal forest in the south to arctic tundra conditions in the north. Of a total of 516 diatom taxa in the Jamésie-Hudsonie data set, 218 species were used for the development of a transfer function for the reconstruction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In the Québec.Labrador data set, two inference models were developed for the reconstruction of water colour and alkalinity based on 128 of 303 diatom taxa. The majority of taxa belonging to this surprisingly species-rich boreal-subarctic diatom flora are illustrated in photographic plates, accompanied by a short description of the distribution of each taxon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies

From the preface This project was initiated in 1998 with the development of a surface diatomcalibration set for selected regions from the Arctic Islands.Under the study surface sediments, mosses, rock and otheravailable habitats were studied from 91 ponds and lakes. It became clear that the diatoms observed were new or undocumented. Detailed taxonomic studies were done at the Canadian Museum of Nature using SEM generated images andthe extensive Library. A must have for research in the Arctic

Book excerpt: This e-book presents state-of-the-art research projects and opinions on using paleolimnology for lake restoration and managment. It illustrates the general idea that proposing adequate restoration and managment solutions must be based on the past. Knowing the natural and anthropic variations a water body went through defines the best ways for maintaining or restoring an ecosystem. By quantifying baseline conditions, paleolimnology provides a definite plan for restoration and management. This cannot be achieved without studying the past.

Book excerpt: Advances in Algal Biology: A Commemoration of the Work of Rex Lowe was written by students and colleagues of Rex Lowe to acknowledge his esteemed career that included exceptional contributions to research and teaching. Papers in the book cover a variety of topics in algal ecology, focusing on benthic algal ecology in freshwater ecosystems. The studies provide an unusual combination of small-scale experiments and large-scale regional surveys that bridge both basic and applied ecology. Ecologists, limnologists, phycologists, and environmental scientists will find valuable contributions to the development and application of algal research.

Book excerpt: The vast area of the North Pacific, spanning ~55˚ longitude, represents a challenge for documenting and understanding the geologic history of ocean, atmosphere, and terrestrial environmental change. Nevertheless, its importance for many issues, including our fundamental understanding of ocean and atmospheric circulation patterns and teleconnections with natural modes of climate variability through time, has led to a steady rise in the numbers of study sites and proxy types. By bringing together a wide range of proxies and timescales that examine the impacts of paleoclimate on ecosystems, water, carbon, and humans, and interactions between marine and terrestrial processes, this Research Topic contributes to an improved understanding of the region’s significance at global, hemispheric, and regional scales.

Book excerpt: The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social, and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels. Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was prepared by an international team of over 300 scientists, experts, and knowledgeable members of indigenous communities. The report has been thoroughly researched, is fully referenced, and provides the first comprehensive evaluation of arctic climate change, changes in ultraviolet radiation and their impacts for the region and for the world. It is illustrated in full color throughout. The results provided the scientific foundations for the ACIA synthesis report - Impacts of a Warming Arctic - published by Cambridge University Press in 2004.
