Existing literature reveals that through the evolution of education in the United States, schools have been forced to place a strong emphasis on graduation. Many factors, including academic success, socioeconomic status, race, and gender, can impact a student's likelihood of graduating on time. This study looks at the importance of the freshman year of high school programming -specifically two programs at a small urban high school in Northeast Ohio -and their influence on the graduation rate for three cohorts of students. Using a mixed-methods design, the researcher investigated the classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021. Through an examination of school surveyresults from 58 former students, and interviews with nine graduates, the quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the voluntary summer Freshman Academy (a one-day voluntary program) program and year-long required Freshman Advisory (a full-year mandatory course) course do have an impact on student success. For school districts looking to aid with the transition to high school, the results of this research can provide some ideas and suggestions for successful programming.

Over the last decade many school districts across the United States have created 9th grade campuses, a type of small learning community comprised only of first-time freshmen to provide special attention to students in their first year of high school (Chmelynski, 2003). This descriptive analysis study examined the graduation rates of four cohorts of students. The researcher conducted a program evaluation of a ninth grade campus that isolated graduation rates. Data were analyzed to determine if differences existed between the graduation rates of students who attended stand-alone 9th grade campuses as opposed to those who attended traditional high school campuses. Of the four groups of subjects examined, two groups of cohorts attended a traditional 9th-12th grade high school in southeast Texas and the other two cohorts of students attended a separate stand-alone 9th grade only campus their freshman year. The descriptive analyses results showed that significant differences did not exist between those students who attended a 9th grade center and those students who attended a traditional nine through twelve campus. It was noted that particular special populations and ethnicities of students who attended the ninth grade center had higher graduation rates than students who did not. Recommendations for examining sub-groups with lower graduation rates are important implications for school leaders. It is imperative that school districts create, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs that address the ninth grade transition and encourage higher student graduation rates.

Book excerpt: With over two thirds of high school graduates going on to pursue postsecondary options after high school and over one fourth at 4-year institutions and nearly half at 2-year schools never reaching their sophomore year, it is evident that the transition from high school to college is a broken one for many students. There has been a nationwide call to redefine the senior year of high school and rethink the transition from secondary to postsecondary education. Aligned with this plea, Walters State Community College began an initiative, the Freshman Experience program, to ease some of the strains associated with the transition process and, in 1993, began offering this course to high school seniors. The program was expanded and offered to seniors at 23 high schools in a rural 10-county service delivery area in East Tennessee. The purpose of this study was to determine whether students who completed a freshman experience course while still in high school engaged in more actions that positively impact retention than did those who had not had such a course prior to college enrollment. The study included 1,391 students, 550 who completed the course at the high school level and 841 who completed the course during their 1st semester of college enrollment. Chi-square analysis of the data was conducted to investigate 6 variables. The major findings were that high school freshman experience completers (a) made application for college earlier, (b) earned significantly more advanced studies credits, (c) had significantly fewer absences during their 1st semester of college, (d) had significantly fewer course withdrawals, (e) had significantly fewer course failures, and (f) had significantly higher cumulative GPAs at the end of the 1st semester than did the postsecondary program completers. Based on the findings of this study, the implementation of a freshman experience course or similar program serves to positively impact the transition of high school seniors to the postsecondary en.

The research also explored the impact of the A+ program on these performance measures after adjusting for school size in number of pupils, poverty level of school as measured by percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch, and percentage of minority enrollment. The review of the literature provided an overview of the research into the economic impact of education on individuals and on society, the research into high school dropouts and effective high school dropout prevention practices, and a historical perspective of the Missouri school reform initiative significant to this study. Data for this study were obtained from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The population was limited to public high schools in Missouri, utilizing data from the 2001-2002 school year. The first two null hypotheses were tested using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedure. The last two null hypotheses were tested using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) procedure. Analysis of the first hypothesis indicated no significant difference between graduation rates at A+ Schools and the graduation rates at Missouri public high schools that have not been designated as A+ Schools. The analysis of the second hypothesis found a significant difference between the percentage of 2002 graduates of A+ Schools enrolling in postsecondary educational programs and the percentage of 2002 graduates of non-A+ schools enrolling in postsecondary educational programs. The analysis of the third hypothesis indicated there was no significant difference between the graduation rates at A+ Schools and the graduation rates at non-A+ Schools after controlling for the effects of school size in number of pupils, percent of students eligible for free and reduced lunch, and percentage of minority enrollment. The fourth hypothesis found no significant difference between the percentage of 2002 graduates of A+ schools enrolling in postsecondary educational programs and the percentage of 2002 graduates of non-A+ schools enrolling in postsecondary educational programs after controlling for the effects of school size in number of pupils, percent of students eligible for free and reduced lunch, and percentage of minority enrollment.
