Book excerpt: An important result of our investigations of the fatigue response of composite materials has been the identification and characterization of the effect of frequency of cycled loads (or strain). Frequency has been found to significantly influence the fatigue response of boron/epoxy and boron/aluminum plate specimens with a center hole. A large data base for strain-controlled testing of boron/epoxy and boron/aluminum at different frequencies has been reported earlier. More recently, we have extended the data base to include load-controlled test results for boron/epoxy and boron/aluminum using stiffness change as the primary damage parameter, and allowable stiffness change as a failure criterion. In general, the data show that low-frequency fatigue loading produces more concentrated, local, hole-related damage with corresponding greater specimen stiffness reduction. In contrast, high-frequency loading produces more dispersed damage with more axial micro-structure-related damage and less stiffness reduction. Since these results are true for two widely different materials and different testing conditions, the authors believe that these effects are representative of the mechanics of the phenomenon, and do not represent isolated effects. It appears that frequency effects can be expected in many fiberous composites and that they are large enough to be of significant consequence in many engineering applications.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of the last two tasks of a three-task program focusing on the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual strength of graphite/epoxy laminates. Specimens of two laminate types, a 32-ply quasi-isotropic and 24-ply 67%-0, containing a centered poorly drilled hole were evaluated in this study. Baseline static tension and compression tests were conducted at high and low strain rates and at elevated temperature.

Book excerpt: Variations in the degradation and subsequent fatigue reliability of laminated composite plate specimens with a center hole due to changes in cycle frequency have been identified and investigated. Boron-epoxy and boron-aluminum specimens were examined, principally for stiffness and strength variations. Various combinations of stiffness and strength changes were observed as a function of cycle frequency and specimen material, including a mode wherein stiffness decreased significantly while residual strength increased. A kinetic damage model was developed and combined with a Weibull extreme value expression to attempt to represent the stochastic aspects of the fatigue process. The model shows some promise, especially from the standpoint of representing widely varying fatigue behavior, including the unusual situation of stiffness drop with strength increase. Frequency dependence is included in the model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synergism of the mechanics of nondestructive testing and the mechanics of materials response has great potential value in an era of rapid development of new materials and new applications for con ventional materials. The two areas are closely related and an advance in one area often leads to an advance in the other. As our understanding of basic principles increases, nondestructive testing is outgrowing the image of "black box techniques" and is rapidly becoming a legitimate technical area of science and engineering. At the present time, however, an understanding of the mechanics of nondestructive testing is lagging behind other advances in the field. The key to further development in the mechanics of nondestructive testing lies in the mechanics of the phenomena or response being investigated - a better understanding of materials response suggests better nondestructive test methods to investigate the response which, in turn, advances our understanding of materials response, and so on. With this approach in mind, the Materials Response Group of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University hosted a Conference on the Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing on September 10 through 12, 1980. Sponsors of the conference were the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual strength of the impact-damaged laminates can be predicted using an analytical model. Both the power law and the wearout models appear to be useful in predicting the fatigue life of the composite laminates. However, because of the slope parameter, the wearout model appears to have a slight edge over the power law model, particularly at low fatigue life and higher applied stress. The strength degradation due to cyclic loading in notched laminates was found to be extremely small up to a million cycles. The residual strength of the fatigue-damaged laminates was found to increase (in proportion to the applied maximum stress with R = 0.1) after a million fatigue cycles. Impact loading followed by cyclic loading was found to be more damaging (in reducing the life of the laminate) than the reversed sequence of loading. The magnitude of the minimum projectile velocity causing catastrophic failure in the laminates tested was found as a function of the applied stress and the number of fatigue cycles.
