Book Synopsis Alarms and Discursions by : Gilbert Keith Chesterton
Download or read book Alarms and Discursions written by Gilbert Keith Chesterton and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1927 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Mr. Chesterton had been permitted to have his own way this handful of papers would have been sent out under the title of "Gargoyles." Perhaps the publisher foresaw horror upon the faces of really unimaginative readers when once brought face to face with a "monster" title; so it was changed to "Alarms and discursions," as indefinite and capable of possibilities as one could wish. "Fragments of futile journalism or fleeting impressions," Mr. Chesterton calls his essays. "This row of shapeless and ungainly monsters . . . does not consist of separate idols cut out capriciously in lonely valleys or various islands. These monsters are meant for the gargoyles of a definite cathedral. I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires." Forty essays, in which excellent common sense and brilliantly phrased wisdom mingle with sheer nonsense.

Book Synopsis Notes from the Back of the Clipboard by : Michael Brackett
Download or read book Notes from the Back of the Clipboard written by Michael Brackett and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notes From The Back of the Clipboard contains a variety of anecdotes about experiences the author encountered during his life and the lessons he learned from those experiences. The anecdotes include growing up as a child, running a cattle ranch, operating a historic tug boat, managing an international consulting business, holding a variety of management positions, emergency service work (fire rescue, medical, law enforcement), a multitude of recreational activities, and raising three boys. The anecdotes come from simply observing people in the act of being themselves. Some anecdotes are funny, some are heart warming, some are serious, and some are sad, but they are all facts of life. Each anecdote presents a lively story that ends with a message for the reader. These anecdotes provide the reader a fresh perspective on life and may refresh experiences the reader had that could lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling life.
Download or read book When in French written by Lauren Collins and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A language barrier is no match for love. Lauren Collins discovered this firsthand when, in her early thirties, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language? Collins wonders, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “je t’aime”? When the couple, newly married, relocates to Francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming "a Borat of a mother" who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French. When in French is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidently telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society—which, it turns out, is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French.
Book Synopsis Machine Translation by : John Lehrberger
Download or read book Machine Translation written by John Lehrberger and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the computer in translating natural languages ranges from that of a translator's aid for word processing and dictionary lookup to that of a full-fledged translator on its own. However the obstacles to translating by means of the computer are primarily linguistic. To overcome them it is necessary to resolve the ambiguities that pervade a natural language when words and sentences are viewed in isolation. The problem then is to formalize, in the computer, these aspects of natural language understanding. The authors show how, from a linguistic point of view, one may form some idea of what goes on inside a system's black box, given only the input (original text) and the raw output (translated text before post-editing). Many examples of English/French translation are used to illustrate the principles involved.
