Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Course, Second Year This "Second Course," like the First, is based on the following principles, the soundness of which has been proved by years of practical experience: - (1) A living language must be heard before being seen. (2) The actions, persons, objects, scenes described must be imagined; i.e. seen in the mind, while the teacher speaks. (3) Every sentence contains a basic word (generally the verb) which should be learnt first. (4) Sentences are much more easily remembered if they are learnt in their logical succession. (5) Subjective sentences (expressing thoughts, feelings, judgments, etc.) are best learnt by oral teaching in the form of conversation. Directions are given on pages 1 to 4 of the First Course for the rational teaching and study of the exercises, verbs, and conversation sentences. In addition to the Exercises and Conversation sentences, rules of grammar are given, in French as well as in English, and should be learnt in French. This object has been sought, not through narrative and de scription, making books and authors the subject, but through the literature itself, in specimen extracts illuminated by the necessary explanation and criticism. No class has time to do justice to a grammar of three or four hundred pages and it was after taking counsel with a number of teachers of the language, both native French and Americans, that the grammatical portion of the work was limited to the essentials given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second French Book The first french book was drawn up according to the best continental methods, of which the above quotation admirably expresses the aim. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of French Grammar School classes should, in general, follow the sequence of lessons indicated just below the chapter headings. As 79 of the 185 chapters are used twice (the most important paradigms and rules being te viewed), there are in all 264 lessons. Classes that have four recitations a week for 33 weeks will thus be provided with a full two years' course. Classes that have only three periods a week can take Lessons 1-99 the first year, and Lessons 100-198 the second, Lessons 199-264 being omitted altogether or reserved for a third year. Either the first 99 or the first I 32 lessons make a well rounded first year's course, covering all that is absolutely indispensable in French grammar. In schools where there are more than four or less than three recitations a week, other arrangements of the lessons can be made. It will, indeed, Often be found advisable to deviate in various ways from the suggested program: for instance, in classical schools two lessons can frequently be taken at a time; while classes that have only one year of French can, if necessary, omit the first fifteen chapters, and learn pro nunciation in connection with their reading. The French Text and all the paradigms and examples contained in a lesson should, in any case, be pronounced by the pupils after the teacher, before the lesson is pre pared. When a lesson consists of a review of preceding chapters, the French texts and the exercises of those chapters are not included in the lesson. The Supplementary Exercises do not form an essential part of the course: they are intended for review, for use in alternate years, and for classes that are able to spend a great deal of time on grammar. The lessons from no. 28 on are so constructed as to require only a small amount of study, in order that pupils may have plenty of time to devote to the preparation of translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of the French Language This abridged French course was composed at the request and for the use of some Fren'ch students who wanted to learn, in a very limited space of time, all that is essential in the language and most commonly used in social and commercial relations. According to their information, existing French methods were either too elementary or too complicated, too incomplete or too voluminous. They wanted something short, clear, practical, substantial, and devoid, as much as possible, of pedantic technicalities. While in the state of manuscript, this little French course was studied by them and proved to be satisfactory. They found it easy to learn and interest ing, and, in a few months, were able to express themselves in French on many subjects of daily occurrence. Encouraged by their success, I showed my manuscript to pupils who had studied French with me for years with the aid of the old methods. All of them took a liking to my little essay and wanted to study it. Finally the conclusion was drawn that a book of this kind was needed in America, and I was advised to prepare it for print.
