Mit Hilfe einer an Gadamer orientierten Hermeneutik wird untersucht, ob sich hier Phänomene finden lassen, welche den Bedeutungen von "Fremdheit" oder "Andersheit" in der gegenwärtigen bildungstheoretischen Debatte entsprechen können. Als Folie eines solchen zeitgenössischen (phänomenologischen) Fremdheitsverständnisses dient Bernhard Waldenfels' weithin rezipierter Entwurf. In der Analyse nicht nur der im engeren Sinne bildungstheoretischen Schriften Humboldts wird aufgezeigt, dass beide Termini zwar nur äußerst selten explizit genannt werden, dass jedoch an zahlreichen Stellen in Humboldts Werk ein Entwurf von Bildung erkennbar wird, welcher Fremdheit und Andersheit für notwendig erachtet. Ein von einer Responsivität des Fremden ausgehendes Denken wird ebenso sichtbar, wie ein intentionales Fremdheitsverständnis und damit eine Konzeption der Begriffe, die bei aller Übereinstimmung mit deren Fassung bei Waldenfels auch wesentliche Unterschiede aufweisen, die den aktuellen bildungsphilosophischen Diskurs bereichern können.
