Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new freezing test for determining the frost susceptibility of soils is presented to supplant the standard CRREL freezing test currently specified by the Corps of Engineers. This test reduces the time required to determine the frost susceptibility of a soil in half. It also allows for the determination of both the frost heave and thaw weakening susceptibilities and considers the effects of freeze-thaw cycling. The new freezing test eliminates much of the variability in test results caused by the human element by completely automating the temperature control and data observations. Keywords: Airfields; Frost-susceptible soils; Pavement design; Roads.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Selected Frost Susceptibility Test Methods by : Edwin J. Chamberlain
Download or read book Evaluation of Selected Frost Susceptibility Test Methods written by Edwin J. Chamberlain and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three methods for determining the frost susceptibility of soils are evaluated in this report. These methods are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers frost design soil classification system, a moisture-tension/hydraulic-conductivity test, and a laboratory freeze-thaw test. The Corps method, which is based on particle size, soil classification, and a laboratory freezing test, was found to be useful for identifying frost-susceptibility. The moisture-hydraulic-conductivity test was found to be unacceptable because it required too much time and its results correlated poorly with field observations. The freeze-thaw test was determined to be the most accurate of the methods studied, including the freeze test that is a part of the Corps method. The freeze-thaw test is thoroughly described. It includes indexes of both frost-heave susceptibility (heave rate) and thaw-weakening susceptibility (CBR after thawing). It also accounts for the effects of freeze-thaw cycling and is completely automated to improve the repeatability of the test results. It is suggested that the freeze-thaw test considered as a replacement for the Corps freezing test.

Key features: Soil properties explained in practical terms. A large number of correlations between different soil properties. A valuable aid for assessing design values of properties. Clear statements on practical limitations and accuracy. An invaluable source of reference for experienced professionals working on geotechnical design, it will also give students and early-career engineers an in-depth appreciation of the appropriate use of each property and the pitfalls to avoid.
Book Synopsis Frost Susceptibility of Soil by : Edwin J. Chamberlain
Download or read book Frost Susceptibility of Soil written by Edwin J. Chamberlain and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of determining the frost susceptibility of soils are identified and presented in this report. More than one hundred criteria were found, the most common based on particle size caharacteristics. These particle size criteria are frequently augmented by information such as grain size distribution, uniformity coefficients and Atterberg limits. Information on permeability, mineralogy and soil classification has also been used. More complex methods requiring pore size distribution, moisture-tension, hydraulic-conductivity, heave-stress, and frost-heave tests have also been proposed. However, none has proven to be the universal test for determining the frost susceptibility of soils. Based on this survey, four methods are proposed for further study. They are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Frost Susceptibility Classification System, the moisture-tension hydraulic-conductivity test, a new frost-heave test, and the CBR-after-thaw test. (Author).
Book Synopsis Freezing Test for Evaluating Relative Frost Susceptibility of Various Soils by : C. W. Kaplar
Download or read book Freezing Test for Evaluating Relative Frost Susceptibility of Various Soils written by C. W. Kaplar and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a description of the equipment and procedures used in the laboratory test of the relative frost susceptibility of different soils on Corps of Engineers construction projects and includes typical results of freezing tests of natural soils. The test uses a slow unidirectional freezing of a 6-in. high, remolded or undisturbed soil specimen with water available at the base (open system). The heaving rate measured during the test is used as the basis for classification of the frost susceptibility potential of the soil. This type of test, which measures heaving rate, is considered most versatile and adaptable for evaluating the effects of numerous soil parameters on frost heave. (Author).

Book Synopsis Experiments to Simplify Frost Susceptibility Testing of Soils by : C. W. Kaplar
Download or read book Experiments to Simplify Frost Susceptibility Testing of Soils written by C. W. Kaplar and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments conducted at USA CRREL in recent years indicate that the two weeks or so required for the frost susceptibility testing of soils with previous procedures can be shortened considerably. Results of these experiments show that useful frost heaving data can be obtained in a matter of 2 or 3 days by a more rapid freezing technique. Results of experiments in which soil specimens were exposed to a constantly maintained temperature are presented. Data show that heave rate in laboratory experiments is a variable, not a constant, of a soil and is strongly dependent upon the heat extraction rate. The important role of frost susceptibility testing and soil evaluation for highway design is discussed. The suitability of equipment for use in conducting frost-heaving tests is also discussed. Book Synopsis A Freeze-thaw Test on Halton Till Treated with Cement Kiln Dust by : Warren Y. Lee
Download or read book A Freeze-thaw Test on Halton Till Treated with Cement Kiln Dust written by Warren Y. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) is used by the construction industry in highway projects to stabilize moist soils. However, the Ministry of Transportation for Ontario permits the use of CKD only in non-frost-susceptible zones since CKD may cause heaving due to a high proportion of silt size particles in the CKD. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the freeze-thaw behaviour of CKD-treated soils. The experimental procedure consisted of two unidirectional freeze-thaw cycles over a period of five days. The test material was Halton till treated with CKD at different dosages. The results indicate that the addition of CKD up to 30% by dry weight does not alter the frost susceptibility of CKD/soil mixtures. At 40% CKD, mixtures show an increase in frost heave.

Book Synopsis Frost-susceptibility Testing and Predictions for the Raymark Superfund Site by : Vincent C. Janoo
Download or read book Frost-susceptibility Testing and Predictions for the Raymark Superfund Site written by Vincent C. Janoo and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was conducted to assist in predicting the effects of freeze and thaw cycling on Tilcon common granular fill during the freezing season. This material is being used as the subbase material in the proposed pavement structure at the Raymark Superfund site in Stratford, Connecticut. Based on the initial laboratory results of the Tilcon material performed at CRREL, the amount of fines passing the no. 200 sieve was found to be in the vicinity of 20%, of which approximately 14% was finer than 0.02 m. Results from the frost heave tests indicate that when the Tilcon material is saturated, based on the rate of heave, the material is classified a high to very high frost susceptible material. In the saturated condition, the material is classified as a low to medium frost susceptible material. Computer simulations were run to predict the amount of frost heave and frost penetration that may be expected on this site during the freezing season. Results from the laboratory frost susceptibility tests and com uter simulations were then used to estimate the amount of cumulative damage to the pavement structure during its design life.

Book Synopsis Comparison of Freezing Cells Used in the Determination of Soil Frost Susceptibility by : PFX Hasson
Download or read book Comparison of Freezing Cells Used in the Determination of Soil Frost Susceptibility written by PFX Hasson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the importance that side friction plays in the direct freezing tests of soils it was decided to compare four freezing cell geometries to determine which showed the least resistance to frost heaving. Two of the most common freezing cells, the tapered cylinder and the multi-ring cyclinder, were selected to be compared to the Cornell split cylinder freezing cell. A tapered wall multi-ring freezing cell was also compared to see if a combination geometry offered any advantages. Soils were compacted in the molds using the standard Proctor method. The specimens were frozen simultaneously using the Corp of Engineers twelve-day freeze test procedure. The results showed that the multi-ring cylinders were far superior to the tapered wall and split cylinder freezing cells. The tapered wall multi-ring freezing cell did not offer any advantages over the multi-ring cylinder freezing cell.
