Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a new foreword by Pema Chödrön, this Tibetan Buddhist classic explores the meaning of freedom and how we can attain it through meditation Freedom is generally thought of as the ability to achieve goals and satisfy desires. But what are the sources of these goals and desires? If they arise from ignorance, habitual patterns, and negative emotions, is the freedom to pursue these goals true freedom—or is it just a myth? In The Myth of Freedom and the Way of Meditation, Chögyam Trungpa explores the true meaning of freedom, showing us how our attitudes, preconceptions, and even our spiritual practices can become chains that bind us to repetitive patterns of frustration and despair. He also explains how meditation can bring into focus the causes of frustration, and how these negative forces can aid us in advancing toward true freedom. Trungpa's unique ability to express the essence of Buddhist teachings in the language and imagery of contemporary American culture makes this book one of the best, most accessible sources of the Buddhist doctrine ever written.

Book excerpt: The classic guide to enlightened living that first presented the Buddhist path of the warrior to Western readers—with a new foreword and cover presentation. This timeless classic presents a vision of basic human wisdom that synchronizes the mind and body—what Chögyam Trungpa called the sacred path of the warrior. This discipline embodies characteristics that many cultures, regions, and spiritual traditions throughout time have found valuable. The sacred warrior conquers the world not through violence or aggression but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge, discovering the basic goodness of human life and radiating that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. That’s what the Shambhala teachings are all about, and this is the book that has been presenting them to a wide and appreciative audience for more than thirty years. This book is part of the Shambhala Pocket Library series. The Shambhala Pocket Library is a collection of short, portable teachings from notable figures across religious traditions and classic texts. The covers in this series are rendered by Colorado artist Robert Spellman. The books in this collection distill the wisdom and heart of the work Shambhala Publications has published over 50 years into a compact format that is collectible, reader-friendly, and applicable to everyday life.

Book Synopsis Insight Dialogue by : Gregory Kramer
Download or read book Insight Dialogue written by Gregory Kramer and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insight Dialogue is a way of bringing the tranquility and insight attained in meditation directly into your interactions with other people. It’s a practice that involves interacting with a partner in a retreat setting or on your own, as a way of accessing a profound kind of insight. Then, you take that insight on into the grind of everyday human interactions. Gregory Kramer has been teaching the practice (which he originated) for more than a decade in retreats around the world. It’s something strikingly new in the world of Buddhist practice—yet it’s completely grounded in traditional Buddhist teaching. Kramer begins with a detailed presentation of the central Buddhist teaching of the Four Noble Truths seen through an interpersonal lens. Because dukkha (suffering or unsatisfactoriness) is often most forcefully felt in our relations with others, interpersonal relationships are a wonderfully useful place to practice. He breaks the Noble Truths down into component parts to observe how they manifest particularly in relationship to others, using examples from his own life and practice, as well as from his students’. He then goes on to present the practice as it’s taught in his workshops and retreats. There are a few basic steps to the practice, deceptively simple to describe: (1) pause, (2) relax, (3) open, (4) trust emergence, (5) listen deeply, and (6) speak the truth. The sequence begins following a period of meditation, and includes periods of speaking, listening, and mutual silence. Kramer includes numerous examples of people’s experience with the practice from his retreats, and shows how the insight gained from the techniques can be brought into real life. More than just testimonials for how well the practice "works," the personal stories demonstrate the problems that arise, the different routes the practice can follow, and the sometimes surprising insights that are gained.

Download or read book Shift into Freedom written by Loch Kelly and published by Sounds True. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is possible to access the same sense of well-being, clarity, inner freedom, and loving connection realized by the world’s meditation masters. We can do this by shifting our awareness in the midst of our daily lives. Shift into Freedom presents innovative teacher Loch Kelly’s training manual for actively participating in the evolution of your own consciousness. Synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world’s contemplative traditions, Shift into Freedom offers an accessible and remarkably powerful series of meditations that lead us to a little-known natural capacity called “awake awareness.” Through an unfolding process of “small glimpses, many times,” these exercises shift us from a thought-based knowing to an awareness-based way of operating in the world. With continued practice, we learn to “unhook” from our customary home in our ego-based identity—and then sustain an embodied presence and relatedness known as “open-hearted awareness.” Loch Kelly teaches that this is “the meeting place of awakening and growing up, where we have the capacity to handle a fully emotional, intimate life and act with authenticity and compassion.” Learn more about: • How to separate awareness from thinking to realize that thoughts and emotions are not the center of who we are • How insights from neuroscience can help us learn how to embody awakening • Ego-identification, a pattern of thought that co-opts the body’s boundary program and creates a mistaken identity • The paradox of “being home while returning home” • Finding the off-switch for the chattering mind • How to intentionally and immediately shift into peace of mind any time of your day • Awakening as a natural process of human development, which unfolds as waking up, waking in, and waking out • Meditation practices for all phases of the journey of awakening and embodiment • Four stages of spiritual growth: recognition, realization, stabilization, and expression • Untying the “knots” in our mindbody system to liberate us from our deepest doubts and fears • How to move from deliberate mindfulness to effortless mindfulness and heart mindfulness • How to effortlessly focus without using attention • Discovering your innate happiness that is not dependent on circumstances • How to welcome and liberate sub-personalities after initial awakening • A user’s manual for your consciousness to help you free yourself from the limits of ego-identification and live from open-hearted awareness
Book Synopsis Buddhism, Meditation, and Free Will by : Rick Repetti
Download or read book Buddhism, Meditation, and Free Will written by Rick Repetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Buddhist philosophy has seemingly rejected the autonomous self. In Western philosophy, free will and the philosophy of action are established areas of research. This book presents a comprehensive analytical review of extant scholarship on perspectives on free will. It studies and refutes the most powerful Western and Buddhist philosophical objections to free will and explores the possibility that a form of agency may in fact exist within Buddhism. Providing a detailed explanation of how Buddhist meditation increases self-regulative mind-control abilities, the author argues that the Buddhist path is designed to produce meditation virtuosos exhibiting mind-control abilities far exceeding the free-will advocate's ability to 'do otherwise' or have their choices be 'up to' them. Based on the empirically-supported mind-control cultivated by these meditation virtuosos, the book proposes the principle of, 'Buddhist Soft Compatibilism', a theory of 'freedom of the mind' that entails freedoms of the will, attention, emotion and action, compatible with both determinism and indeterminism. Buddhism, Meditation and Free Will will be of interest to Buddhist and Western philosophers and academics interested in comparative philosophy, free will, philosophy of action, metaphysics, ethics and Religious Studies.
Book Synopsis The Personal Liberation System by : Steven Redden
Download or read book The Personal Liberation System written by Steven Redden and published by Pls Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Personal Liberation System (PLS) is a method of attaining inner freedom through the integrated practice of dispassion and meditation. Dispassion enables you not to be thrown into agitation (irritation, anger, fear, self-pity, worry, etc.) by people, events, and circumstances. Meditation builds a pathway from out of the realm of ordinary thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations (not-self) and into that of your real Identity (Self). Integrated into a system, these two disciplines support and enhance each other, like exercise and diet do in a physical fitness regimen. Thus meditating creates a reservoir of calm that makes practicing dispassion easier, and quelling agitated reactions to life makes it easier to meditate. The PLS is designed for people with a wide variety of motives and goals: (1) be a better person and have a better life; (2) free yourself from painful patterns and reactions to life; (3) uncover your real Self and live at your center; (4) improve our relationships; (5) tread the spiritual path. If you have the will to improve your psychological well-being in most any area, the PLS techniques will furnish the way to accomplish it. The book contains everything you need to know about how to use the system. It was designed to serve as both an instruction manual and a handy reference source once you put the techniques into practice. Here are its topics and overall structure: Part I. Dispassion 1-The Basis of Dispassion 2-The Necessity for Dispassion 3-The Science of Dispassion 4-Seeking & Accepting Facts 5-Expecting Nothing 6-Rejecting Unnecessary Seriousness 7-Learning Through Experimentation 8-Minding Our Own Business 9-Curbing Needless Speculation 10-Forgetting the Past 11-Controlling Speech Part II. Meditation 12-The Basis of Meditation 13-The Necessity for Meditation 14-The Basic Meditation 15-Mind as a Movie Theater 16-Mind as a Concept Creator Individual chapters typically contain five sections: an analysis of a given problem, the PLS methods for solving it, exercises and checklists for implementing the solution, an example of a person applying the methods to a real-life situation, and a summary of the chapter's essential points. Here is a sampling of content from various chapters: In every situation, we have a choice: we can either (1) have the situation or (2) have the situation, plus add a problem to it by being thrown into agitation about it. If we choose (2), we now have two "problems," the second of which is entirely created by us. The moment we start regarding expectations as "things we can depend on happening-and they had better happen or we will be really upset," we have bought ourselves a ticket to dispassion disaster. For every such expectation is a land mine that we lay in our own psyche, and eventually some person (or situation) will "step on" one, and it will blow up-inside us. Like a barnacle attached to a ship, feeling serious usually accompanies thinking seriously and acting seriously. Yet we can address even the most serious matters better when we do not inflict on ourselves the added burden of feeling serious about them. Most of us probably associate failing to mind our own business with the burdensome effects it produces on the "interferee." But it is also a major source of agitation and bondage for the "interferer," and learning to leave people free is profoundly liberating. It is an expression of "soul courtesy," which scrupulously avoids actions that infringe others' free will or unfairly make their lives harder. Every one of us lives in a private, one-seat theater in which we experience a continuous series of interior movies created by us and known only to us. Download or read book Yoga Meditation written by Gregor Maehle and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will not only give a precise step-by-step description of the meditation technique at the heart of yoga but also put it into context with all other yogic techniques and how they contribute to the breakthrough to spiritual freedom. Yogic meditation derives its power from the fact that it systematically suspends the entire processing capacity of the subconscious mind and diverts it towards meditation. The processing power of the subconscious mind is a multiple of that of the conscious mind. Simply watching breath or watching awareness involves only your conscious mind. For quick and effective concentration the entire power of the subconscious mind has to be harnessed. This is the secret of yogic meditation. You will also find information on the importance of Kundalini as support for meditation and the factors that make it rise, such as chakra and Sushumna visualization, mantra and breath. The text then explains how the chakras represent evolutionary stages of brain and mind development. Chakra meditation, if done in a sophisticated, high-powered way, will propel the evolution of the brain and mind of the practitioner and the awakening of higher intelligence.
