Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Trade and Tariffs: A Speech Delivered on July 20, 1881, to the Penge and Anerley Liberal Association I will attempt to tabulate, as well as possible from the confused and conflicting expressions of these retro grade economists, some statements as to the objects they have in view, and their method of obtaining them. We are told, then, that the course they advocate is good for purposes of revenue; secondly, that it will protect and foster our industries; thirdly, that it is useful in coercing foreign nations into granting us more liberal terms, or to punish them if they exclude our trade; and, further, this policy is commended on the ground of its adoption by foreign nations, and the success which is said to attend its practice. Book excerpt: In Roads Were Not Built for Cars, Carlton Reid reveals the pivotal—and largely unrecognized—role that bicyclists played in the development of modern roadways. Reid introduces readers to cycling personalities, such as Henry Ford, and the cycling advocacy groups that influenced early road improvements, literally paving the way for the motor car. When the bicycle morphed from the vehicle of rich transport progressives in the 1890s to the “poor man’s transport” in the 1920s, some cyclists became ardent motorists and were all too happy to forget their cycling roots. But, Reid explains, many motor pioneers continued cycling, celebrating the shared links between transport modes that are now seen as worlds apart. In this engaging and meticulously researched book, Carlton Reid encourages us all to celebrate those links once again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Trade Policy of the Liberal Party: A Speech Delivered at Pendleton, September 30, 1868 ON Wednesday evening, September 80th, 1868, at the Pendleton Club, Charlestown, Henry Rawson, Esq., in the chair, Professor J. E. Thorold rogers spoke as follows upon the free trade policy of the Liberal party. Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen, - There are, perhaps, several reasons Why at the plesent crisis the attention, not of you only, but also of all the electors throughout Great Britain and Ireland, should be called to that financial history which is implied in the heading to the address I purpose giving you this evening. My friend, Mr. Rawson, has alluded to the fact that the great battle of free trade - that is, the liberation of your bread from the tax of the monopolist - was achieved 22 years ago. As a consequence, a very large number of persons in this meeting must be unaware of how great and continuous were the struggles by which that victory was won. We are told in the sacred page that, after the great blessing of plenty, during a time of dearth, was secured by the Wisdom which the Divine inspiration bestowed upon the Patriarch Joseph, in the course of time another generation arose which knew not Joseph, and that the people thereupon fell under the power of the Egyptians. Gentlemen, you may apply this historical fact to your selves. If you lose sight of those who in times past, by their policy, vindicated to you a free market, both for your food and for your labour, you may be quite certain that the Egyptians will be down upon you again, and constrain you to make your bricks without straw. In this life, all of us are suspended between heaven and hell. Few people understand what Jesus did or how it affects us. Worse yet, there are endless squabbles between Christians of different persuasions, leading to confusion on a massive scale. In this book, Jimmy Akin uses his expertise in Scripture and Church teaching to cut through the confusion and provide clear answers on important issues like: What we need to do to be saved Whether salvation is a one-time event or a process Whether penance is part of God's plan What indulgences are How faith and works relate What the Church teaches about justification How far apart Protestants and Catholics are on this question Whether you have to be a Catholic (or a Christian) to be saved No other book takes on these questions with the clarity and precision that Akin brings to them and the answer will affect you and those you love . . . forever.

Book excerpt: An authoritative and comprehensive account of the bicycle's two-hundred-year evolution. The bicycle ranks as one of the most enduring, most widely used vehicles in the world, with more than a billion produced during almost two hundred years of cycling history. This book offers an authoritative and comprehensive account of the bicycle's technical and historical evolution, from the earliest velocipedes (invented to fill the need for horseless transport during a shortage of oats) to modern racing bikes, mountain bikes, and recumbents. It traces the bicycle's development in terms of materials, ergonomics, and vehicle physics, as carried out by inventors, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers. Written by two leading bicycle historians and generously illustrated with historic drawings, designs, and photographs, Bicycle Design describes the key stages in the evolution of the bicycle, beginning with the counterintuitive idea of balancing on two wheels in line, through the development of tension-spoked wheels, indirect drives (employing levers, pulleys, chains, and chainwheels), and pneumatic tires. The authors examine the further development of the bicycle for such specific purposes as racing, portability, and all-terrain use; and they describe the evolution of bicycle components including seats, transmission, brakes, lights (at first candle-based), and carriers (racks, panniers, saddlebags, child seats, and sidecars). They consider not only commercially successful designs but also commercial failures that pointed the way to future technological developments. And they debunk some myths about bicycles—for example, the mistaken but often-cited idea that Leonardo sketched a chain-drive bike in his notebooks. Despite the bicycle's long history and mass appeal, its technological history has been neglected. This volume, with its engaging and wide-ranging coverage, fills that gap. It will be the starting point for all future histories of the bicycle.
