Book excerpt: The static and fatigue characteristics of delamination growth in the S2/CE9000 glass/epoxy laminates under cyclic loading and various environmental conditions were investigated. From the resulting data, a growth model with ? = 3 x 10-5 and ? = 5 was established. In the many cases reviewed in this paper, the values of ? and ? remain unchanged until there is a change in temperature, a change in moisture content, or a change in the R ratio.

Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that the onset and stable growth of edge delaminations under quasi-static loading can be characterized using the strain energy release rate G and delamination resistance curves (R curves). This study addresses the problem of edge delamination growth under fatigue loading. To characterize the fatigue growth successfully, it is shown that it is not sufficient to consider only the maximum energy (Gmax) released as the delamination grows. Instead, the energy released must be compared to the increasing resistance to further growth. This increasing resistance to delamination grwoth GR can be explained best in terms of the associated matrix cracking, which is observed under both static and fatigue loading. Using results from a [±30/±30/90/9 ̄0]s T300-5208 and a [45/0/-45/90]s XAS-914 graphite-epoxy laminate, separate power law correlations between the edge delamination fatigue growth rates and the term (Gmax/GR) are obtained. The measured exponents are in the range 4.1 to 6.

Book excerpt: Tapered [0°] laminates of S2/CE9000 and S2/SP250 glass/epoxies, and two different specimen types of IM6/1827I, a graphite/epoxy with a toughened interleaf, were tested. Specimens were subjected to cyclic tension in a hydraulic load frame. The specimens usually showed some initial stable delaminations in the tapered region, but these did not affect the stiffness of the specimens, and loading was continued until the specimens either delaminated unstably, or reached 106 to 2 x 107 cycles with no unstable delamination. The final unstable delamination originated at the junction of the thin and tapered regions, and extended into both the tapered and thin regions.

Book excerpt: The effect of free-edge stresses on the fatigue of graphite/epoxy laminates was evaluated numerically and experimentally. Reported are results of static and compression-dominated (R = -3.75) fatigue tests on AS4/3501-6 and IM6/5245C using unnotched specimens. Two different stacking sequences of 18-ply laminates were tested. The lamination was (0°/45°/90°) (44.4%, 44.4%, 11.1%). Damage development was monitored using ultrasonic C-scans, photoelastic coatings, and optical microscopy.

Book excerpt: The effects of stress ratio on delamination onset behavior under cyclic loading was investigated in AS4/3502 [+/-252/90]s graphite/epoxy laminates. For the purpose of this study, delamination onset was defined as a delamination 5% of the laminate width. The resulting data showed definite changes in delamination behavior between stress ratios (R ratio) of 0.1 and 0.5.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The onset and growth of delaminations in unnotched [±30/±30/90/90 ̄]s graphite-epoxy laminates is described quantitatively. These laminates, designed to delaminate at the edges under tensile loads, were tested and analyzed. Delamination growth and stiffness loss were monitored nondestructively. Laminate stiffness decreased linearly with delamination size. The strain energy release rate, G, associated with delamination growth, was calculated from two analyses. A critical G for delamination onset was determined, and then was used to predict the onset of delaminations in [+45n/-45n/0n/90n]s (n = 1,2,3) laminates. A delamination resistance curve (R-curve) was developed to characterize the observed stable delamination growth under quasi-static loading. A power law correlation between G and delamination growth rates in fatigue was established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on characterizing matrix cracking and delamination behavior in multidirectional laminates. Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90° plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90° ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90° ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena.

Book excerpt: An experimental and analytical study was conducted on the influence of matrix cracking on delamination in (+ 15/90n/-15)s glass-epoxy laminates subjected to monotonically increasing tension loads. Four different layups are examined with the number of symmetric 90° layers varying from 0 to 3 (n = 0, 1, 2, 3). Experimental results show that local delaminations form at the intersection of matrix cracks in the + 15° plies and the free edge. A quasi-three-dimensional (Q3D) finite-element analysis is used to examine free-edge stresses in undamaged laminates. Q3D results show that: (1) in-plane transverse tensile stresses exist in the +15° plies near the free edges of all of the laminates and (2) only the interlaminar shear stress is high at the + 15/? interface. Three-dimensional (3D) finite-element analyses are used to model a + 15° ply crack near the laminate free edge. The 3D analysis results indicate that large tensile interlaminar normal, as well as shear, stresses develop at the intersection of the matrix crack and the free edge. This suggests that the interlaminar normal stress plays a significant role in the failure of these laminates and emphasizes the importance of modeling matrix cracking in delamination analyses of composite structures.

Book excerpt: This study investigates delamination growth from holes in carbon fibre reinforced epoxy (CFRE) AS/3501-6 (02/±45)s laminates under tensile static and fatigue loading. Delaminations grow in a direction parallel to the loading at the 0/45 and 45/-45 interfaces. Attempts to control the location of the delamination by using inserts were unsuccessful. The delamination growth rates were fitted by a power function of the stress amplitude and mean stress. The stress amplitude is the dominant parameter. Tests were performed on dry and saturated specimens at room temperature, and there was no measurable difference in growth rates. However, block loading tests, where an overload was applied at regular intervals, resulted in growth rates five times higher than a linear sum of the individual growth rates. Compliance changes were measured and correlated with the extent of delamination. The associated matrix cracking contributes substantially to the compliance changes. The amount of matrix cracking for a given delamination length is a function of the type and level of loading. The results are interpreted in terms of the total strain energy release rate, G. Once the presence of matrix cracking is allowed for, there is reasonable agreement with results in the literature.
