Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the conventional dichotomy of chaste, pure Madonna and libidinous whore, the former has usually been viewed as the ideal form of femininity. However, there is a modern religious movement in which the negative stereotype of the harlot is inverted and exalted. The Eloquent Blood focuses on the changing construction of femininity and feminine sexuality in interpretations of the goddess Babalon. A central deity in Thelema, the religion founded by the notorious British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), Babalon is based on Crowley's favorable reinterpretation of the biblical Whore of Babylon, and is associated with liberated female sexuality and the spiritual ideal of passionate union with existence. Analyzing historical and contemporary written sources, qualitative interviews, and ethnographic fieldwork in the Anglo-American esoteric milieu, the study traces interpretations of Babalon from the works of Crowley and some of his key disciples--including the rocket scientist John "Jack" Whiteside Parsons, and the enigmatic British occultist Kenneth Grant--until the present. From the 1990s onwards, this study shows, female and LGBTQ esotericists have challenged historical interpretations of Babalon, drawing on feminist and queer thought and conceptualizing femininity in new ways. Tracing the trajectory of a particular gendered symbol from the fin-de-sicle until today, Manon Hedenborg White explores the changing role of women in Western esotericism, and shows how evolving constructions of gender have shaped the development of esotericism. Combining research on historical and contemporary Western esotericism with feminist and queer theory, the book sheds new light on the ways in which esoteric movements and systems of thought have developed over time in relation to political movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, covering three years from March 1924 to March 1927, comprises over 890 letters, of which about 350 are previously unpublished. In 1924 Lawrence is again in the USA. He and Frieda, with his disciple the Honourable Dorothy Brett, return to Taos, New Mexico where Frieda soon becomes the owner of a ranch, Kiowa. The tensions among them contribute to Lawrence's falling dangerously ill. He recovers at Kiowa; he and Frieda go to England and Germany in Autumn 1925; they then settle in Italy, where - except for his final visit the next summer to the Midlands - they remain. After leaving the USA he writes short and long stories with European settings, book reviews, and the first two versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It is a productive period, but Lawrence's health becomes a serious concern. The volume provides annotation identifying persons and allusions, and includes a biographical introduction.

Book excerpt: Austin Osman Spare is the definitive biography of the controversial occultist and artist, an enfant terrible of the Edwardian art world whose work was both hailed as genius and decried as immoral decadence. As George Bernard Shaw reportedly said, "Spare's medicine is too strong for the average man." Trained as a draughtsman, Spare enjoyed early acclaim when, at the age of seventeen, his work was shown at the Royal Academy in London. But his star soon declined; Spare went underground, falling out of the gallery system to live in poverty and obscurity. After a brief association with Aleister Crowley, he became absorbed in occultism and sorcery, voyaging into inner dimensions, while developing his own magical philosophy of pleasure, obsession, and the subjective nature of reality. All the while, Spare continued to produce extraordinary art, and held his exhibitions outside of the conventional art world, in London pubs. Today Spare is both forgotten and famous, a cult figure whose modest life has been much mythologised since his death; the world's largest Spare collection is held by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. Biographer Phil Baker separates fact from myth, providing wide-ranging insights into Spare's art and mind, reconnecting him with the art community that ignored him and exploring the rich tapestry of the culture that surrounded him, interweaving the birth of psychoanalysis, the historiography of the occult, and the British class system. This richly readable and illuminating biography, containing 50 black and white and 8 color photographs of Spare's art, takes us deep into the strange inner world of this enigmatic artist.

Book excerpt: This leather bound volume traces the life of Frederic Carter. The diary spans from July 1867 through March 1883. The journal begins as Carter sails from England on board the St. Lawrence bound for India. At this time he is an assistant surgeon in the 20th Native Infantry, Bengal, Indian Medical Department. Carter recorded his experiences in the Bengal army, including long marches, the names of commanding officers, the regiments, positions, and some strategic information. Carter was first stationed in Pakistan, and described building his bungalow in Talagang. Carter recorded major events, for instance, the arrival of "Lord Mayo" (Richard Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo and Viceroy of India). He recorded when the Russians were in Kabul, Afghanistan in January of 1879, and the start of Franco-Prussian War. Carter also noted cholera outbreaks in the region. He described an investment property in the village of Chamkor, India--sometimes referred to as the "Carter Estate"--and leasing land to local villages and having the land prepared for farming. Carter traveled by train throughout India including Delhi, Lucknow, Calcutta, and Bombay. In 1870 he was promoted to Surgeon-Major of the Gurkha Infantry, 1st Regiment in Dharmsala, India. He noted the letters he received from and sent to his family, and the courtship with his wife Agnes Jane Emmett. Agnes arrived in Bombay, India in November 1871 and the pair was married in December the same year. Carter wrote of the birth of his daughter Gertrude in 1872. In May 1874 Frederic, Agnes who was pregnant, and their daughter returned to England by way of a tour of Europe. They traveled through Italy, Innsbruck, Munich, Cologne, and Brussels. In England, Agnes gave birth to their son on 23 August and died shortly after on 4 September, 1874. Carter discloses his grief in the diary. Between the years 1875 and 1883 Carter discussed the Bengal army, when he was going to leave the service, his investment property, and the care of his children. Curiously, on 18 March 1868 Carter wrote a memoir in middle of the journal to give an account of the major events in his life up to that point. In this passage Carter recalled the death of his father, his journey to New York, and his wish to be a sailor. He discussed his family including his brother William, and meeting Agnes. In addition to his life in the Bengal Army Carter recorded hunting expeditions and listed all the animals he sees and shoots including a tigress. He also described climbing mountains. The volume is written in ink with the last six leaves written in pencil. The last leaves are an account of Carter's estate at Chamkor, India. He lists names and payments received from leased land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.H. Lawrence remains one of the most popular and studied authors of the 20th century. This book is a comprehensive but easy to use reference guide to Lawrence's life, works, and critical reception. The volume has been systematically structured to convey a coherent overall sense of Lawrence's achievement and critical reputation, but it is also designed to enable the reader who may be interested in only one aspect of Lawrence's career, perhaps even in only one of his novels or stories, to find relevant information quickly and easily without having to read other parts of the text. The book begins with an original biography by John Worthen, one of the world's foremost authorities on Lawrence's life and work. The chapters that follow provide separate entries for all of Lawrence's works, except for individual poems and paintings, with critical summaries, discussions of characters, and details of settings. There is also a complete overview of Lawrence and film, with the most complete listing available of film adaptations of his works and of criticism relating to them. Each section of the book provides comprehensive primary and secondary bibliographical data, including citations for the most recent scholarly studies. Maps and chronologies further trace Lawrence's travels and his development over time.
