Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fred Williams is one of Australia's greatest painters. He created a highly original and distinctive way of seeing the Australian landscape and was passionate about the painting process itself. This is the first major retrospective of Williams' work in over 25 years. It highlights Williams' strength as a painter including important large oil paintings and luminous gouaches to reveal his distinctive approach, often combining a feeling for place with a strong abstract emphasis. Williams' inspiration often emerged from the unique qualities of landscapes around Australia, from Upwey in Victoria to the Bass Strait in Tasmania and the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Although Williams is most often associated with dry environments, some of the surprises in the exhibition are the works that reveal his fascination with water--ponds, rivers, waterfalls and seascapes. The show uncovers other unexpected elements, such as portraits of his family and friends, and delicate studies in gouache of plants and animals."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis From the Bullet to the Ballot by : Jakobi Williams
Download or read book From the Bullet to the Ballot written by Jakobi Williams and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive history of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party (ILBPP), Chicago native Jakobi Williams demonstrates that the city's Black Power movement was both a response to and an extension of the city's civil rights movement. Williams focuses on the life and violent death of Fred Hampton, a charismatic leader who served as president of the NAACP Youth Council and continued to pursue a civil rights agenda when he became chairman of the revolutionary Chicago-based Black Panther Party. Framing the story of Hampton and the ILBPP as a social and political history and using, for the first time, sealed secret police files in Chicago and interviews conducted with often reticent former members of the ILBPP, Williams explores how Hampton helped develop racial coalitions between the ILBPP and other local activists and organizations. Williams also recounts the history of the original Rainbow Coalition, created in response to Richard J. Daley's Democratic machine, to show how the Panthers worked to create an antiracist, anticlass coalition to fight urban renewal, political corruption, and police brutality.

Download or read book Bringing in Finn written by Sara Connell and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: In February 2011, 61-year-old Kristine Casey delivered the greatest gift of all to her daughter, Sara Connell: Sara's son, Finnean. At that moment, Kristine--the gestational carrier of Sara and her husband Bill's child--became the oldest woman ever to give birth in Chicago. While Finnean's birth made local headlines, this book tells one modern family's remarkable surrogacy story. Connell recounts the tragedy and heartbreak of losing pregnancies; the process of opening her heart and mind to the idea of her mother carrying her child for her; and the profound bond that blossomed between mother and daughter as a result of their unique experience together. Bringing in Finn is a tale of despair, hope, forgiveness, and redemption--and the discovery that when it comes to unconditional love, there are no limits to what can be achieved.--From publisher description.
