Book Synopsis French Urban Planning, 1940-1968 by : W. Brian Newsome
Download or read book French Urban Planning, 1940-1968 written by W. Brian Newsome and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Urban Planning 1940-1968 explores the creation and progressive dismantling of France's centralized, authoritarian system of urban and architectural planning. Established in the wake of World War II to facilitate the reconstruction and expansion of cities, this planning program led to the evolution of large suburban housing estates plagued by inter/intra family conflict, juvenile delinquency, and other social difficulties, which sociologists connected to poor planning and design. Critics began calling for the democratization of planning to remedy design problems, and the government of Charles de Gaulle started reforming planning procedures in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This book moves beyond technical and political issues to explore forces of religion, gender, and class that affected planning practices. Key critics and state officials emerged from the Catholic Left. Some were women from working-class backgrounds, and they manipulated gender stereotypes to insert working- and middle-class women into the design process. Sometimes in opposition, but often together, these reformers initiated the most significant change of architectural and urban planning until the introduction of François Mitterrand's decentralization reforms in the 1980s. French Urban Planning 1940-1968 will appeal to scholars and students interested in architectural, urban, and social trends in twentieth-century France.

Book Synopsis Modern Architectural Theory by : Harry Francis Mallgrave
Download or read book Modern Architectural Theory written by Harry Francis Mallgrave and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Architectural Theory is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of architectural theory, primarily in Europe and the United States, during three centuries of development. In this synthetic overview, Harry Mallgrave examines architectural discourse within its social and political context. He explores the philosophical and conceptual evolution of its ideas, discusses the relation of theory to the practice of building, and, most importantly, considers the words of the architects themselves, as they contentiously shaped Western architecture. He also examines the compelling currents of French rationalist and British empiricist thought, radical reformation of the theory during the Enlightenment, the intellectual ambitions and historicist debates of the nineteenth century, and the distinctive varieties of modern theory in the twentieth century up to the profound social upheaval of the 1960s. Modern Architectural Theory challenges many assumptions about architectural modernism and uncovers many new dimensions of the debates about modernism.

Book Synopsis Architecture in France in the Eighteenth Century by : Wend Graf Kalnein
Download or read book Architecture in France in the Eighteenth Century written by Wend Graf Kalnein and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture in France in the Eighteenth Century Wend von Kalnein French architecture of the eighteenth century - which exhibited great technical ability and refined taste - influenced architectural style throughout Europe. This handsome book is a survey of the French architecture of the period. It begins with the origins of the 'style moderne' under the last years of Louis XIV, discusses the end of Rococo and the return to antiquity, and concludes with the Revolutionary architecture and the house of Madame Récamier. Kalnein describes the development of palace and hôtel architecture by the two great architects de Cotte and Boffrand, discussing such large urban projects as the reconstruction of Rennes and the Places Royales. He traces the return to antiquity (which began when the scholars of the Académie d'Architecture were sent to Rome), the revolutionary architecture with its grand, but never executed, projects, and the shift from neoclassicism to early romanticism. Kalnein also examines the decorative arts of the period, which became even more important than architecture in the Rococo period. Focusing on such architects as Boffrand, Gabriel, and Redoux, he shows how a study of their building decoration illuminates the evolution of 'style moderne,' the battle between Rococo and Neoclassicism, and the dissemination of French styles throughout Europe.

Book Synopsis The Template-makers of the Paris Basin by : John James
Download or read book The Template-makers of the Paris Basin written by John James and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12th- and 13th-century early Gothic churches from the region around Paris which form the basis of this study were large-scale undertakings. Dr James draws on evidence which suggests that work proceeded in a series of projects, when funding, technical problems (for example, slow-setting mortar), and the work of other trades (such as roofing and centring) allowed. Within each project there were generally a number of separately organised phases, or `campaigns', and it is from close study of these campaigns that the author proceeds to an identification of the characteristics of the individual master masons, the template-makers.

Book Synopsis Universal Singular by : Sonia Curnier
Download or read book Universal Singular written by Sonia Curnier and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical introduction to the design of public spaces The way public spaces are designed reflects the period in which they were created. However, in our globalized world of experience and images the desire for uniqueness tends to achieve the opposite: increasingly, designers of open spaces resort to the same devices and thereby distance themselves from the urban context. The author analyzes ten outstanding contemporary designs of public spaces in Europe in terms of their function in the urban context and what materials are used for their implementation. In interviews with the designers she retraces the changes of the concepts during the design stage of the projects, underpinning her findings with numerous sketches. In addition, her research focuses on how the projects were received in the community. Learning from designers of outstanding public spaces in Europe Numerous unpublished design sketches A clear guide to urban design Also available in a French edition
