Book excerpt: An eye-opening exploration of a unique region of Italy that bridges the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, featuring 80 recipes and wine pairings from a master sommelier and James Beard Award-winning chef. “An exhilarating journey, no passport required.”—Thomas Keller, chef/proprietor, The French Laundry Bordered by Austria, Slovenia, and the Adriatic Sea, the northeastern Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is an area of immense cultural blending, geographical diversity, and idyllic beauty. This tiny sliver of land is home to one of the most refined food and wine cultures in the world and yet remains off the grid. The unique cuisine of Friuli is what inspires the menu at Frasca, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant in Boulder, Colorado, helmed by master sommelier Bobby Stuckey and chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Meaning “branch” or “bough,” the word frasca refers to the Friulian tradition of hanging a branch outside the family farm as a sign that new wine was available for sale. Friuli Food and Wine celebrates this practice and the wine and cuisine of the Friulian region through eighty recipes and wine pairings. Dishes such as Wild Mushroom and Montasio Fonduta, Chicken Marcundela with Cherry Mostarda and Potato Puree, Squash Gnocchi with Smoked Ricotta Sauce, and Whole Branzino in a Salt Crust are organized by Land, Sea, and Mountains, while profiles of local winemakers and wines, including Tocai, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, and Verduzzo, open up new pairing possibilities. Showcasing the best Friulian wines you can buy outside of Italy as well as restaurant and winery recommendations, this beautifully photographed cookbook, wine guide, and travelogue brings the delicious secrets of this untouched part of Italy into your home kitchen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the postbellum nineteenth century, journalism reached larger audiences with more information in less time. With the rise of industrialization and mechanization, the means of conveying news to the public improved dramatically. In 1873 Frederic Hudson, one of the nation's first journalism historians, predicted that these technological advances would spawn genuinely national newspapers. Such publications would be circulated to all parts of the country by means of pneumatic tubes, he wrote, which could convey newspapers from one coast to the other within three hours. The prophesy of compressed air blowing bunches of newspapers across the length and breadth of the country was so far awry that it is amusing to consider today. However, Hudson's forecast of a national newspaper, which seemed just as far-fetched in that era of a distinctly provincial press, came to fruition in only the following decade. As the population soared (due in large measure to immigration), as urban areas blossomed, and as the public became increasingly literate, more people turned to newspapers for information about their community and nation. It was against this backdrop that the Saturday Globe was born in 1881. From its auspicious infancy in Utica, New York, the Saturday Globe grew into a major newspaper with nationwide circulation. Through its pioneering use of regional editions, it became the first truly national newspaper in United States history. It served as a unifying force for disparate communities, which were constantly being redefined by the expansion of industry and the increase in population. The Saturday Globe's readership, which peaked at nearly 300,000, was attracted by its stunning artwork, its national scope, and its charming miscellany of stories. In many ways, the Saturday Globe was a theoretical forerunner of USA Today. Although it eschewed the political partisanship so common among newspapers of the era, the Saturday Globe emanated a morally conservative tenor, which was sometimes difficult to reconcile with the newspaper's tendency toward sensationalism. Relying on many diverse sources, Ralph Frasca constructs a comprehensive social history of the Saturday Globe, placing it in a larger context by showing how cultural, technological, economic, demographic, and journalistic forces in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries both created a milieu for the Saturday Globe's inception and success and lead to its demise forty-three years later. The story of the Saturday Globe offers insight into the processes by which mighty newspapers rise, fall, and erode into the deepest recesses of time. The survival of America's newspapers is just as much a concern now as when the Saturday Globe, a mere husk of its former self, folded. While the Saturday Globe fought a losing battle against imitators and magazines, today's newspapers wage a similar war against the encroachment of the broadcast media. The history of the Saturday Globe offers a compelling case study of a major newspaper's rise and fall.

Assuming only a basic knowledge of automatic control and signals and systems, Optimal and Robust Control: Advanced Topics with MATLAB® offers a straightforward, self-contained handbook of advanced topics and tools in automatic control. Techniques for Controlling System Performance in the Presence of Uncertainty The book deals with advanced automatic control techniques, paying particular attention to robustness—the ability to guarantee stability in the presence of uncertainty. It explains advanced techniques for handling uncertainty and optimizing the control loop. It also details analytical strategies for obtaining reduced order models. The authors then propose using the Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) technique as a unifying tool to solve many types of advanced control problems. Topics covered include: LQR and H-infinity approaches Kalman and singular value decomposition Open-loop balancing and reduced order models Closed-loop balancing Passive systems and bounded-real systems Criteria for stability control This easy-to-read text presents the essential theoretical background and provides numerous examples and MATLAB exercises to help the reader efficiently acquire new skills. Written for electrical, electronic, computer science, space, and automation engineers interested in automatic control, this book can also be used for self-study or for a one-semester course in robust control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals as the Third in Relational Psychotherapy: Exploring Theory, Frame and Practice elegantly and skilfully weaves together relevant literature, clinical reflections, compelling case material and contemporary psychoanalytic theory to demonstrate how the presence of an animal in the treatment arena can eventually bring about relational, interpersonal and intrapsychic change. Contemporary relational psychoanalytic literature has been virtually silent about our relationship with animals, a feature seemingly intrinsic to our relational worlds. This book seeks to remediate this void by giving voice to the practice and principles of working relationally in the presence of an animal. The text accentuates recurrent themes: animals are seen by human beings as significant subjective others and are treated as legitimate partners for relational and interpersonal processes, attachment figures and transferential objects; animals in the psychotherapy environment can play the role as a ‘bridge’ from the unconscious to the conscious, from the dissociated to the experienced, from the intrapsychic to the interpersonal; as the third in the treatment arena, the animal helps to reveal the field, bringing conflicts to life and making them available for analysis in the clinical setting. In seeking to authorise the incorporation of animals into the practice of relational psychotherapy the text applies conventional concepts to novel contexts; it extends psychoanalytic and relational principles to create a theoretical framework within which to consider the therapeutic effects of working in the triadic interactions of therapist, client and animal and thus also begins to evolve a new version of relational psychoanalytic practice. The authors value the human-animal experience in treatment and repeatedly show how the application of a relational psychoanalytic lens to the patient-therapist-animal triad can enhance the therapeutic process in ways that encourage progressive communication, understanding of the patient and the relaxing of defences, leading to the symbolising of relational capacity, therapeutic breakthrough and intrapsychic change.

Book excerpt: How videogames offer a new way to do journalism. Journalism has embraced digital media in its struggle to survive. But most online journalism just translates existing practices to the Web: stories are written and edited as they are for print; video and audio features are produced as they would be for television and radio. The authors of Newsgames propose a new way of doing good journalism: videogames. Videogames are native to computers rather than a digitized form of prior media. Games simulate how things work by constructing interactive models; journalism as game involves more than just revisiting old forms of news production. Wired magazine's game Cutthroat Capitalism, for example, explains the economics of Somali piracy by putting the player in command of a pirate ship, offering choices for hostage negotiation strategies. Videogames do not offer a panacea for the ills of contemporary news organizations. But if the industry embraces them as a viable method of doing journalism—not just an occasional treat for online readers—newsgames can make a valuable contribution.
