Download or read book Frank Brangwyn Photographs written by Paul Cava and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Brangwyn used photography as a primary aid in the execution of his elaborate allegorical murals, like his contemporaries, Maxfield Parrish, Jose Maria Sert, Alphonse Mucha, Degas and Franz von Stuck. The Paul Cava collection of Brangwyn photographs is the largest archive of it's kind in private hands. The archive contains over 150 prints, many of which are of nude or semi nude models, squared-up in pencil or ink for transfer onto paper or canvas. It was not uncommon for artists to disassociate themselves from their photographic practices early in the last century and Brangwyn was typical in this respect. Little was known of Brangwyn's use of photography until the discovery of this photographic archive in the 1990s. This is the second volume of Brangwyn's photographs published by Paul Cava Fine Art. Additional information and reproductions regarding Frank Brangwyn and his use of photography is presented in two informative essays contained in the publication 'Frank Brangwyn Photographs: Nude and Figure Studies, Vol 1", published by Paul Cava Fine Art in 2001.

Book Synopsis A House in Sicily by : Daphne Phelps
Download or read book A House in Sicily written by Daphne Phelps and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2000-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near Mount Etna in Sicily lies Casa Cuseni, a beautiful house built in golden stone - and the home which Daphne Phelps was astonished to find she had inherited in 1947. At the age of 34, war-weary from working as a psychiatric social worker, with barely any Italian, and precious little money, she plunged into a fascinating Sicilian world. Every imaginable problem had to be overcome, not only financial difficulties but local authorities and a house staff who initially felt no loyalty to the new Signorina but who gradually accepted her as a respected member of their small community. To help make ends meet, for many years she ran Casa Cuseni as a pensione and to her doors came Roald Dahl, Tennessee Williams, Bertrand Russell and Henry Faulkner. But just as important to her life and her story are the Sicilians with whom she shared the love and care of Casa Cuseni: Don Ciccio the local mafia leader, Vincenzio, general manservant who recited while he served the meals, Beppe, a Don Juan who scented his eyebrows and his moustache to attract the local girls; and above all the steadfast cook and housekeeper who lives with Daphne still and to whom this book is dedicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its 19th-century beginnings to sophisticated modern developments, the poster has not only been a powerful communications tool but has also reflected and shaped society. This fascinating account of the evolution of the poster reproduces 250 of the best examples of poster art from around the world. The book is divided into three sections, which look at the poster as a political statement, as a tool of advertising and consumerism, and as a work of art in its own right. Also discussed are graphic vocabulary, design, methods of production, and usage. Among the works featured are the fin-de-siecle masterpieces of Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha; psychedelic posters of the 1960s; propaganda posters from the United States, Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, and China; and iconic commercial posters for Levis, Haagen-Dazs, Wonderbra, and many others. Capturing the essence of their time, these posters speak out again in this colorful collection.

Book excerpt: This biography explores the remarkable life of Jessie Traill - artist, traveller, humanitarian and independent spirit. From the ten-year-old who first met Tom Roberts painting on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, to a student of Frederick McCubbin and etchers John Mather and Frank Brangwyn, Jessie developed her professional skills. She interrupted her career to work as a voluntary nurse in France during World War I, later raising funds for and revisiting war-torn Europe. She also became one of Australia's most outstanding etchers, working in a field uncommon for women of her time. Through diary extracts, descriptions of her world travels and personal letters we hear her voice and see through her eyes, beauty, humour and the joys of simple living.
