He was a native of that town, which is on the Southern border of the Abruzzi, in the diocese of Marsica, and close to the (now drained) lake of Fucino. The notion that his birthplace was Cellino in the neighbouring diocese of Penna is incorrect (d'Alencon, ix.-xii.). The date of his birth and the name of his family are unknown. He was probably admitted by S. Francis to the Order at S. Maria de Portiuncula some time between 1213 and 1216 (d'Alencon, xiii; Goetz, Die Quellen zur Geschichte des hl. Franz von Assist, p.61 n.5), after the Saint's return from his vain attempt to visit Morocco.
