Book Synopsis Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis (SET) by : Valentino Gasparini
Download or read book Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis (SET) written by Valentino Gasparini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 1191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity’s most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the “Oriental religions”. The 26 contributions of this book, divided into three sections devoted to the “agents”, their “images” and their “practices”, shed new light on this religious movement that appears much more heterogeneous and colorful than previously recognized.

Download or read book Coptic Etymological Dictionary written by Jaroslav Černý and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coptic was the language spoken in Egypt from late ancient times to the seventeenth century, when it was overtaken by Arabic as the national language. Derived from ancient Egyptian, the language of the hieroglyphs, it was written in an adapted form of Greek script. This dictionary lists about 2,000 Coptic words whose etymology has been established from ancient Egyptian and Greek sources, covering two-thirds of the known Coptic vocabulary and complementing W. E. Crum's 1939 Coptic Dictionary, still the standard in the field. The Egyptian forms are quoted in hieroglyphic and/or demotic forms. An appendix lists the etymologies of Coptic place-names. The final work of Czech Egyptologist Jaroslav Černý (1898-1970), Professor of Egyptology at Oxford, the Dictionary was brought through to publication by colleagues after his death.

Book Synopsis Mistress of the House, Mistress of Heaven by : Anne K. Capel
Download or read book Mistress of the House, Mistress of Heaven written by Anne K. Capel and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-of-its-kind exhibit cataloged here focuses on the women of Egypt from all levels of society in works compiled strictly from American collections by American curators. Because the quantity of written records is limited (though enormous in comparison to most early societies), there is still much guesswork involved in determining the place women held in Egyptian society. It is clear that, unlike most ancient and not-so-ancient societies, Egypt conferred on women the legal right to own property and to barter their own goods, which means a larger record for current study. The essays here are both erudite and fascinating to read; the illustrations are clear and well presented in conjunction with the text. 117 colour & 112 b/w illustrations
Book Synopsis Isis Pelagia: Images, Names and Cults of a Goddess of the Seas by : Laurent Bricault
Download or read book Isis Pelagia: Images, Names and Cults of a Goddess of the Seas written by Laurent Bricault and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Isis Pelagia: Images, Names and Cults of a Goddess of the Seas, Laurent Bricault, one of the principal scholars of the cults of Isis, presents a new interpretation of the multiple sources that present Isis as a goddess of the seas. Bricault discusses a wealth of relatively unknown archaeological and textual data, drawing on a profound knowledge of their historical context. After decades of scholarly study, Bricault offers an important contribution and a new phase in the debate on understanding the “diffusion” as well as the “reception” of the cults of Isis in the Graeco-Roman world. This book, the first English-language monograph by the leading French scholar in the field, underlines the importance of Isis Studies for broader debates in the study of ancient religion.

Book Synopsis The Cults of the Roman Empire by : Robert Turcan
Download or read book The Cults of the Roman Empire written by Robert Turcan and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the multiplicity of gods and religions that characterized the Roman world before Constantine. It was not the noble gods such as Jove, Apollo and Diana, who were crucial to the lives of the common people in the empire, bur gods of an altogether more earthly, earth level, whose rituals and observances may now seem bizarre. As well as being of wide general interest, this book will appeal to students of the Roman Empire and of the history of religion.
