Book Synopsis The Borgias and Their Enemies, 1431–1519 by : Christopher Hibbert

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This colorful history of a powerful family brings the world they lived in—the glittering Rome of the Italian Renaissance—to life. The name Borgia is synonymous with the corruption, nepotism, and greed that were rife in Renaissance Italy. The powerful, voracious Rodrigo Borgia, better known to history as Pope Alexander VI, was the central figure of the dynasty. Two of his seven papal offspring also rose to power and fame—Lucrezia Borgia, his daughter, whose husband was famously murdered by her brother, and that brother, Cesare, who inspired Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince. Notorious for seizing power, wealth, land, and titles through bribery, marriage, and murder, the dynasty’s dramatic rise from its Spanish roots to its occupation of the highest position in Renaissance society forms a gripping tale. From the author of The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici and other acclaimed works, The Borgias and Their Enemies is “a fascinating read” (Library Journal).

Book Synopsis Sisters in Crisis by : Ann Carey Schmiedeler
Download or read book Sisters in Crisis written by Ann Carey Schmiedeler and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, nearly 200,000 religious sisters worked in Catholic schools, hospitals and other institutions throughout the United States. American Catholics honored these women of faith who founded and built these flourishing works of mercy. Then came the ideological shifts and moral upheavals of the 1960s, and ever since, most women's orders in the United States have been in a state of crisis. Now the sisters are aging, with fewer and fewer younger women to take their place. Perhaps related to this demographic shift is the continuing doctrinal confusion that has come under the scrutiny of the Vatican. Using the archival records of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and other prominent groups of sisters, journalist and author Ann Carey shows how feminist activists unraveled American women's religious communities from their leadership positions in national organizations and large congregations. She also explains the recent and necessary interventions by the Vatican. After examining the many forces that have contributed to the crisis, Carey reports on a promising sign of renewal in American religious life: the growing number of young women attracted to older communities that have retained their identity and newly formed, yet traditional, congregations.
Book Synopsis Those Naughty Popes and Their Children by : Charles Dillon
Download or read book Those Naughty Popes and Their Children written by Charles Dillon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Dillon tells how many popes who reigned during the first 16 centuries were no more than criminals. They bought the papacy by bribing cardinals with gifts of gold and benefices. When in office, they committed adultery, fathered many illegitimate children, committed murders, and even incest. They took good care of their bastards at the expense of the Church. Some children were made priests as young as age seven, and cardinals by age thirteen. They bestowed on them the benefices of churches and towns with incomes that made them rich. Learn how Sergius III (904-911) obtained the papacy by murder, and instituted a reign known as "the rule of the harlots." Read how John XII (953-963) made the St. John Latern "as if it were a brothel." He defiled virgins "even on the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul. Women were afraid to enter St. Peter's Basilica for fear of being raped by the pope." Boniface III (1294-1303) said, "to enjoy oneself and lie with women and boys is no more of a sin that rubbing ones hands together." He called Jesus Christ a hypocrite. Yet for all of the wicked popes, the Church and Christianity has survived.
