However, the organizational structures are more and more characterized by networks containing equal partners which restricts the application of coordination mechanisms. Collaborative planning aims at covering the resulting requirements and gains more and more attention in research and practice. Within these approaches, the companies' shared decision-space is collaboratively explored and evaluated by means of formally specified interaction processes which are connected to local planning models. These procedures allow to find a mutually agreed and beneficial planning solutions which improve the supply chain's overall performance. Within this domain, a limited degree of practical implementations has been identified. Thus, a large potential for supporting supply chain planners and IT-departments in the selection, customization, and implementation of suitable and promising coordination mechanisms exists. Addressing these potentials, as part of his doctoral studies Peer Kuppers developed the Framework for Intelligent Supply Chain Collaboration (FRISCO). It contains methods and tools for designing and modelling collaborative planning concepts as well as an agent-based simulation environment for the use case-driven and quantitative evaluation of their coordination performance. The framework's utility has been shown in various scenarios from different industries which emphasizes its generalizability. As an important part of SCM, supply chain planning (SCP) focuses on planning different aspects of the supply chain through involving different members of the supply chain in the planning process. SCP in construction is scarce as the planning of the logistics in general. Failing to plan the supply chain, involving supply chain members in the planning, and integrating the processes of planning the supply chains and the construction project can be one reason for the low numbers of successful SCM adoption in construction. In improving the SCP in construction, this thesis develops a SCP framework for construction that involves the main contractor, subcontractors, and suppliers. The aim is to improve SCP, collaboration, and eliminate many of the common problems in construction through a SCM and SCP perspective. The developed framework is based on an existing planning framework for sales and operations planning. This framework is generic and synthesises planning in general. It consists of identifying/developing: outcomes, input, organisation, process, key performance measurements, and IT-tools. It is thus necessary to investigate what these aspects means in a construction context. Four research objects will be fulfilled: Objective 1. Local planning procedures such as upstream planning, which are usually applied then, result in suboptimal solutions for the supply chain as a whole. In this work, new mechanisms for inter-organizational, collaborative supply chain planning are presented. These mechanisms are able to identify the systemwide optimum for several classes of supply chain planning problems. They can be applied by two or more self-interested parties and do not require a trusted third party. Extensive computational tests for randomly generated and real-word data suggest a favorable performance of these mechanisms.

In an economy that is increasingly becoming more volatile, organizations find it more difficult to achieve or maintain their competitive advantage. A way of overcoming these challenges and establishing advantages has been through optimization of the supply chain. Initially, these improvement efforts were limited to areas within the organization, such as inventory, quality, or the manufacturing process itself. In the early nineties, however, when the American retail and consumer goods industry was experiencing stagnating revenues and, at the same time, rising costs, an increase in productivity was hardly to be realized. At that time, aggressive pricing policies were seen as the only approach to gain market share, but the consequences, mainly a negative impact on margins and profits, made it an unsustainable business practice (Seifert, 2003). This led the retail industry to recognize that real gains could only be realized through open cooperative partnerships between retailers and manufacturers. As the supply chain improvement initiatives progressed, they began to include collaboration between the manufacturer, its suppliers, and clients. Although collaboration between trading partners was known as an efficient method for improving forecast accuracy, increasing service, and reducing costs, it was not until then that supply chain partners systematically devised processes that would move the information to where it could add value and, thereby, facilitate supply chain coordination. Since then, collaboration has been referred to as the driving force behind effective supply chain management (Horvath, 2001). One of the latest trends in supply chain management, CPFR is advertized by many authors, consultants, and software vendors as one of the most promising practices of collaboration so far (Ireland & Crum, 2005). The purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of this statement. In doing so, it will analyze the success potential associated with CPFR and, based on pilot results, evaluate the benefits and challenges that arise with its implementation.
