Book excerpt: Nearly 70 percent of the people in India live in rural areas and of them almost 25.7 percent live Below Poverty Line (based on NSSO 2011-12 report). The number of rural people in India is 833.1 million of which 216.5 million are estimated to be Below Poverty Line (BPL). There is pressing need to develop rural India to ensure balanced and sustainable economic growth in the country. A plethora of Rural Development initiatives have been formulated developed and implemented from time to time by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India in order to alleviate poverty from the face of India so as to ensure sustainable livelihood to the rural populace. This paper explains through a framework, the context, dimensions, policies and schemes considered by the MoRD for enabling access to sustainable livelihood to rural dwellers in India. The framework based analysis enables to easily comprehend the way the public sector delivery mechanism functions towards realizing the objective of equitable and sustainable development. The framework has been developed on the basis of Meta-analytic survey of government reports and websites. An effort is also made to briefly describe the rationale, dimensions and schemes considered for enabling access to sustainable livelihood with the help of statistical data obtained from macro data sources.

The series aims to fill in gaps in theory and practice in the Sendai Framework, and provides additional resources, methodologies, and communication strategies to enhance the plan for action and targets proposed by the Sendai Framework. The series will appeal to a broad range of researchers, academics, students, policy makers, and practitioners in engineering, environmental science and geography, geoscience, emergency management, finance, community adaptation, atmospheric science, and information technology. This volume offers indigenous approaches to disaster risk reduction, community sustainability and climate change resilience, as well as agro-ecological innovations for improving resilience to climate change. The focus is on adaptation strategies for sustainable terrestrial and marine ecosystems to reduce the impacts of anthropogenic factors that exacerbate disaster risk, including hydro-meteorological services for climate resilience, food security measures in agriculture and livestock, flood mitigation plans, and increased climate change education and awareness. The book concludes with three case studies in Africa detailing the impacts of strengthened climate change resilience measures, adaptive social protections, and improved water availability through hydro-electric technologies.

Book excerpt: Asian economic development and environmental consequences are not only crucial for the wellbeing of the people, but are of great relevance for the global economy. The ongoing intense debate on carbon emission mitigating strategies for reducing the impact of environmental consequences has undermined the principle of equity and put a question mark on the sustainability of the development process of the most dynamic Asian economies. This volume explores fresh perspectives on the issues of wellbeing, Asian economic development and environmental concerns. The book is organised along six themes: issues in sustainability of Asian agriculture; ecological concerns in theory and practice; core themes in economic development; resource management and policy alternatives; discrimination and socio-economic equity in development; and peasant distress and sustainability of cotton economy. The articles are based on unique quantitative data and a rigorous analytical framework for examining policies for an equitable economic and environmental international regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the effective management of the natural environment has become vital over the past few decades. In different countries, varying policies are implemented by governments to manage the environment, both to foster growth and reduce pollution and destruction. Employing a broad country-based approach, this edited collection, first published in 1986, surveys the growth, nature and effectiveness of the environmental management policies implemented by governments around the world. The overarching argument is that a coherent international approach is needed to deal with the problems surrounding environmental sustainability. This title will be of great value to students of the natural environment, sustainability and resource management.
