Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue focuses mainly on techniques and the relative formalism typical of numerical methods and therefore of numerical analysis, more generally. These fields of study of mathematics represent an important field of investigation both in the field of applied mathematics and even more exquisitely in the pure research of the theory of approximation and the study of polynomial relations as well as in the analysis of the solutions of the differential equations both ordinary and partial derivatives. Therefore, a substantial part of research on the topic of numerical analysis cannot exclude the fundamental role played by approximation theory and some of the tools used to develop this research. In this Special Issue, we want to draw attention to the mathematical methods used in numerical analysis, such as special functions, orthogonal polynomials, and their theoretical tools, such as Lie algebra, to study the concepts and properties of some special and advanced methods, which are useful in the description of solutions of linear and nonlinear differential equations. A further field of investigation is dedicated to the theory and related properties of fractional calculus with its adequate application to numerical methods.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ON FRAMELETS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS: A DISCRETE APPROACH Submitted by CHUEN-KAN SZE for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in June 2004 In this thesis, a study was conducted on discrete periodic wavelets and framelets. They are some special vectors that can be used to analyze or synthesize signals. The continuous theory of wavelets and framelets has been well developed since 1983 when Daubechiesdiscoveredcompactly-supportedorthonormalwavelets. Italsohaswidespread applications ranging from solving mathematical, medical to engineering problems. In this thesis, an attempt was made to extract their useful properties and extend to discrete lters. The obtained results would suit practical applications better since most real-life problems are discrete in nature. Another benet is that the tools that are needed in this investigation are quite elementary { mainly some linear algebra and Fourier transforms. This not only makes the investigations much easier, but also helps to spread the results to wider potential users. Another discovery in the research while converting from the continuous framework to the discrete framework is that the traditional vanishing moment conditionsarenotsuitablefordiscreteperiodicwavelets. Thisgivestremendousinitiatives tolookforothersuitablesubstitutes. PossiblealternativesincludeFourier, cosineandsine moments. Another motivation for the study is the large data set problem from internets or data mining problems. This amounts to nding an e(R)ective way to store or analyze the large data set. On this regard, a very detail study on how to nd a suitable scaling function (or a set of scaling functions) to approximate the data set has been conducted. Finally, some neat canonical structures for matrices that are related to discrete periodic wavelets and framelets are exhibited. Possible future applications of the results in this thesis are discussed. DOI: 10.5353/th_b2980393 Subjects: Wavelets (Mathematics)

Book excerpt: The work of Lawrence Baggett has had a profound impact on the field of abstract harmonic analysis and the many areas of mathematics that use its techniques. His sphere of influence ranges from purely theoretical results regarding the representations of locally compact groups to recent applications of wavelets and frames to problems in sampling theory and image compression. Contributions in this volume reflect this broad scope, and Baggett’s unusual ability to bring together techniques from disparate fields. Recent applications to problems in sampling theory and image compression are included.

Book excerpt: The charm of Mathematical Physics resides in the conceptual difficulty of understanding why the language of Mathematics is so appropriate to formulate the laws of Physics and to make precise predictions. Citing Eugene Wigner, this “unreasonable appropriateness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences” emerged soon at the beginning of the scientific thought and was splendidly depicted by the words of Galileo: “The grand book, the Universe, is written in the language of Mathematics.” In this marriage, what Bertrand Russell called the supreme beauty, cold and austere, of Mathematics complements the supreme beauty, warm and engaging, of Physics. This book, which consists of nine articles, gives a flavor of these beauties and covers an ample range of mathematical subjects that play a relevant role in the study of physics and engineering. This range includes the study of free probability measures associated with p-adic number fields, non-commutative measures of quantum discord, non-linear Schrödinger equation analysis, spectral operators related to holomorphic extensions of series expansions, Gibbs phenomenon, deformed wave equation analysis, and optimization methods in the numerical study of material properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Digital signal transforms are of a fundamental value in digital signal and image processing. Their role is manifold. Transforms selected appropriately enable substantial compressing signals and images for storage and transmission. No signal recovery, image reconstruction and restoration task can be efficiently solved without using digital signal transforms. Transforms are successfully used for logic design and digital data encryption. Fast transforms are the main tools for acceleration of computations in digital signal and image processing. The volume collects in one book most recent developments in the theory and practice of the design and usage of transforms in digital signal and image processing. It emerged from the series of reports published by Tampere International Centre for Signal Processing, Tampere University of Technology. For the volume, all contributions are appropriately updated to represent the state of the art in the field and to cover the most recent developments in different aspects of the theory and applications of transforms. The book consists of two parts that represent two major directions in the field: development of new transforms and development of transform based signal and image processing algorithms. The first part contains four chapters devoted to recent advances in transforms for image compression and switching and logic design and to new fast transforms for digital holography and tomography. In the second part, advanced transform based signal and image algorithms are considered: signal and image local adaptive restoration methods and two complementing families of signal and image re-sampling algorithms, fast transform based discrete sinc-interpolation and spline theory based ones."--Publisher.

This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents various contributions of splines to signal and image processing from a unified perspective that is based on the Zak transform (ZT). It expands the methodology from periodic splines, which were presented in the first volume, to non-periodic splines. Together, these books provide a universal toolbox accompanied by MATLAB software for manipulating polynomial and discrete splines, spline-based wavelets, wavelet packets and wavelet frames for signal/ image processing applications. In this volume, we see that the ZT provides an integral representation of discrete and polynomial splines, which, to some extent, is similar to Fourier integral. The authors explore elements of spline theory and design, and consider different types of polynomial and discrete splines. They describe applications of spline-based wavelets to data compression. These splines are useful for real-time signal processing and, in particular, real-time wavelet and frame transforms. Further topics addressed in this volume include: "global" splines, such as interpolating, self-dual and smoothing, whose supports are infinite; the compactly supported quasi-interpolating and smoothing splines including quasi-interpolating splines on non-uniform grids; and cubic Hermite splines as a source for the design of multiwavelets and multiwavelet frames. Readers from various disciplines including engineering, computer science and mathematical information technology will find the descriptions of algorithms, applications and software in this book especially useful.
