Book excerpt: The book is a passionate journey through varied emotions experienced in human life. It voices from the pain of loneliness and yearning of heart for love to the radiance of such idealism that can transcend all pain and sacrifice all joy for the sake of service above self. It glorifies the innocence of romantic love to the height of divinity and then breaks all barriers of individualism to mingle itself with universal love. This tale of poems worships the strength of youth power, their ardent passion and their invincible courage which is capable of perishing all injustice from humanity. On one hand it speaks of the beauty of friendship, love, hope and purity of the child in us and on the other hand, it reveals the ugliness and evils that exist in our society and tarnish this beautiful earth of ours. It voices the pain of the oppressed and the unfortunate and urges the youth to change this world into a better place to live in. The simplicity of the language can convey its message to people from all walks of life and the depth of feelings reflected in the words can touch even a soul, which has never seen the world through the melody of poems, and make it love poetry.

For those of us who grew up with the shaming culture of Judeo-Christian teachings on same-sex love this book was profoundly healing. Now, more than twenty-five years later it is still revolutionary. In a time where gay marriage encourages assimilation, Two Flutes Playing celebrates what makes us different and honors the unique gifts gay men bring to humanity--gifts that are essential to the planet's healing. It helps us recognize and recover the ancient wisdom of our hidden tradition.

Book excerpt: Explores Victorian literature through scent and perfume, presenting an extensive range of well-known and unfamiliar texts in intriguing and imaginative new ways that make us re-think literature's relation with the senses. A selection of poems, essays, and fiction, exploring these texts with reference to both the little-known cultural history of perfume use and the appreciation of natural fragrance in Victorian Britain. It shows how scent and perfume are used to convey not merely moods and atmospheres but the nuances of the aesthete or decadent's carefully cultivated identity, personality, or sensibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lectures on the Philosophy of the Human Mind (Vol. 1 of 3) The mind, it is evident, may, like the body to which it is united, or the material objects which surround it, be considered simply as a substance possessing certain qualities, susceptible of various affections or modifications, which, existing successively as momentary states of the mind, constitute all the phenomena of thought and feeling. The general circumstances in which these changes of state succeed each other, or, in other words, the laws of their succession, may be pointed out, and the phenomena arranged in various classes, according as they may resemble each other, in the circumstances that precede or follow them, or in other circumstances of obvious analogy. There is, in short, a science that may be termed mental physiology, as there is another science relating to the structure and offices of our corporeal frame, to which the term physiology is more commonly applied; and as, by observation and experiment, we endeavour to trace those series of changes which are constantly taking place in our material part, from the first moment of animation to the moment of death; so, by observation, and in some measure also by experiment, we endeavour to trace the series of changes that take place in the mind, fugitive as these successions are, and rendered doubly perplexing by the reciprocal combinations into which they flow. The innumerable changes, corporeal and mental, we reduce, by generalizing, to a few classes; and we speak, in reference to the mind, of[14] its faculties or functions of perception, memory, reason, as we speak, in reference to the body, of its functions of respiration, circulation, nutrition. This mental physiology, in which the mind is considered simply as a substance endowed with certain susceptibilities, and variously affected or modified in consequence, will demand of course our first inquiry; and I trust that the intellectual analyses, into which we shall be led by it, will afford results that will repay the labour of persevering attention, which they may often require from you.

Book excerpt: Thomas Brown (1778–1820), Professor of Moral Philosophy in Edinburgh, was among the most prominent and widely read British philosophers of the first half of the nineteenth century. An influential interpreter of both Hume and Reid, Brown provided a bridge between the Scottish school of 'Common Sense' and the later positivism of John Stuart Mill and others. The selections in this volume illustrate Brown's original ideas about mental science, cause and effect, emotions and ethics. They are preceded by an introduction situating Brown's career and writings in their intellectual and historical context.

Book excerpt: Eight perfumes, two broken hearts and a lot of broken glass... Down a cobbled mews off one of London's rare tranquil backstreets, people come to talk, gaze at the garden, have a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, then leave with a small blue bottle of perfume. Captured inside it is scented memory of happy times. What could be the harm in that? London is a big city, but paths cross, and get all tangled up. A small misunderstanding leads to a seriously large one. This is the novel that accidentally launched a London perfumery, 4160Tuesdays.
