Book Synopsis Fragmentation of Rings and Shells by : Dennis Grady
Download or read book Fragmentation of Rings and Shells written by Dennis Grady and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a brief period during the latter part of World War II, Nevill F. Mott led a theoretical group at Fort Halstead in the United Kingdom that tackled scientific issues related to pressing war-time concerns. Among later awards and honors, Mott was knighted and a recipient of the Nobel Prize. While at Fort Halstead, he undertook an effort to theoretically describe the statistical fragmentation of munitions subjected to intense explosive loading. Mott`s original internal reports contain seminal theoretical concepts on the physics and statistics of dynamic fracture and fragmentation, which have provided the inspiration for numerous later modeling efforts and engineering formulae. Some of his most forward-looking thoughts on the micromechanical and molecular aspects of fracture are included in these publications. The present book surveys the theoretical analysis put forth by Mott with particular focus on his efforts to characterize the size and distribution of fragments resulting from a dynamic fragmentation event. Copies of the original internal reports of Mott and his co-workers are included. The book also pursues additional theoretical analysis with the intent of delving further into the physical ideas and unfinished analysis implicit in Mott`s original studies. This book will be of interest to all scientists and engineers concerned with the dynamic fracture and fragmentation of solid bodies subject to intense transient loads imparted by explosive detonation and high-velocity impact from both the historical and modern perspective.

Book Synopsis Fragmentation Effects of the 75mm H.e. Shell T3 (m48) as Determined by Panel and Pit Fragmentation Tests by : N. A. Tolch
Download or read book Fragmentation Effects of the 75mm H.e. Shell T3 (m48) as Determined by Panel and Pit Fragmentation Tests written by N. A. Tolch and published by . This book was released on 1938 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By fragmentation firings in semi-circular wood panels, the fragment density was determined as a function of the angle with the axis of the shell, the distance, and the remaining velocity. Considering the fragment densities with regard to the angle with the shell axis, the fragments are concentrated in three main classes, commonly designated as nose, side, and base sprays. With regard to the variable of distance, the densities decrease with the distance, the decrease in total number of hits in the side spray averaging about 55% between the 15 and 120 ft. panels. The general effect of remaining velocity is to reduce the number of fragments in the base spray, to shift the side spray forward, and to increase the number of fragments in the nose spray. (Author).
Book Synopsis The Chemical Warfare Service by : Leo P. Brophy
Download or read book The Chemical Warfare Service written by Leo P. Brophy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the second in a series of three devoted to the Chemical Warfare Service (CWS) in World War II, now the Chemical Corps, covers research, development, procurement, and distribution of chemical warfare materiel. It traces the history of these activities from the World War I period, when the CWS was activated to supervise the offensive and defensive aspects of gas warfare throughout the Army, until the end of World War II. The first volume in the series, "Organizing for War", discusses the development of the CWS organization and mission as well as personnel management and military training. The third volume, entitled "Chemicals in Combat", will deal with the chemical warfare activities in the theaters of operations. In treating research and development, the present volume concentrates on CWS projects that proved of greatest significance to the armed forces during World War II. It attempts to point up the problems that arose in course of research and development and to indicate the solutions which the scientists hit upon. Since research and development in the zone of the interior was closely related to research and development in the theaters of operations, the volume covers activities in both areas. In contrast to research and development, procurement and distribution differed considerably as between the zone of the interior and the theaters of operations; in the theaters these activities were closely associated with the commanders' combat responsibilities. The volume, therefore, confines itself to a review of procurement and distribution in the zone of the interior, leaving narration of theater activities to the volume "Chemicals in combat".
Book Synopsis Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition by : Igor A. Balagansky
Download or read book Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition written by Igor A. Balagansky and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-04-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive coverage of weapon damage effects on a variety of objects Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition delivers a thorough exploration of a range of issues related to the effects of ammunition and weapons. The book includes coverage of the basic concepts of the theory of efficiency and the physical foundations of the functional and damaging effects of fragments, shaped charges, high-explosive and penetrating weapons. The author discusses the calculation formulas used to evaluation the parameters of damage fields and their interaction with various objects. Additionally, the book expands on the damage criteria of weapons, the characteristics of the vulnerability of objects with respect to a variety of damaging factors, dependencies for assessing safe distances, and the resistance of various structures to the effects of explosion and impact. Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition also offers: Detailed calculation methods indicating areas of application and the necessary units of used quantities Extensive examples of classic designs of ammunition from around the world Discussions of the characterization of various types of ammunition, including high-explosive, fragment, penetrative, and shaped charges A chapter on the numerical simulation of high-speed processes Perfect for technical specialists working in the fields of explosion safety and explosives, Damaging Effects of Weapons and Ammunition also belongs in the libraries of researchers and students studying explosion phenomena, explosive technologies, explosion safety, and materials science.

Book Synopsis Gas! Gas! Quick, Boys by : Michael Freemantle
Download or read book Gas! Gas! Quick, Boys written by Michael Freemantle and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! reveals for the first time the true extent of how chemistry rather than military strategy determined the shape, duration and outcome of the First World War. Chemistry was not only a destructive instrument of war but also protected troops, and healed the sick and wounded. From bombs to bullets, poison gas to anaesthetics, khaki to cordite, chemistry was truly the alchemy of the First World War. Michael Freemantle explores its dangers and its healing potential, revealing how the arms race was also a race for chemistry to the extent that Germany's thirst for the chemicals needed to make explosives deprived the nation of fertilizers and nearly starved the nation. He answers question such as: What is guncotton? What is lyddite? What is mustard gas? What is phosgene? What is gunmetal? This is a true picture of the horrors of the 'Chemists' War'.
