Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development in the surgical treatment of fractures during the past 9 years has necessitated considerable modifications to the first edition of this book. Numerous new implants and instruments are presented in this, the second edition. In 4.0-, 3.5- and 2.7-mm screws the hexagonal socket has definitively superseded the Phillips head, while mini-implants have been modified and a 1.5-mm screw introduced. A number of new plates and implants have been introduced and have long since proved their value. At the same time new techniques, described here, have been developed and applied. The tension-band wire is included, despite the fact that it does not consist of specific AO implants, and use of the Kirschner wire is also illustrated and emphasized whenever the authors consider that this simple method is still the best available. Alterations in the organization of the book have been necessary: the shoulder, the forearm and the knee are treated in separate chapters, and other sections have been extended. With regard to clinical-radiological examples, new typical situations are described and documented. The case studies from the first edition have been recontrolled in all instances in which it was feasible to do so. In this way many valuable late results, 9-12 years after internal fixation, were obtained. We found that almost all joints had remained stable after healing of an articular fracture; so-called late arthrosis is rare in the peripheral skeleton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected finger injuries may lead to chronic lesions that often have detrimental consequences for the practice of a ball sport, whether at a recreational level or at the top athlete level. The initial injury management is crucial. Depending on the type and the severity of the lesions, different people may get involved: the players themselves or their entourage, physiotherapists, club doctors, emergency physicians, family doctors, sports doctors or hand surgeons. Treatment is usually conservative: the long fingers require rapid mobilization to prevent stiffness and contrary to that, the thumb requires stability. Surgery may be necessary to reach these goals especially for athletes, because of the demands of their sport. Chronic lesions are also in part related to repeated trauma, requiring specialized long-term multidisciplinary treatment. They can often lead to the end of a sporting career, but also may limit the functionality of the fingers at the time of conversion. Dr Chick is Consultant Hand Surgeon in Hôpital de la Tour (Geneva) and Clinique de Genolier, Switzerland, and Visiting Surgeon in Aspetar, Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, Doha, Qatar.

Book excerpt: Featuring over 4,000 large-size illustrations and unique, effective pedagogy, the Fifth Edition of Dr. Greenspan's best-seller is the ideal teaching text on musculoskeletal imaging for radiologists and orthopedists at every level of training. Orthopedic Imaging: A Practical Approach covers all orthopedic problems and imaging modalities and offers indispensable guidance on selecting cost-effective imaging techniques. The Fifth Edition has a new full-color design, with colorized tables and schematics and full-color illustrations including PET-CT. All conventional tomography has been replaced by CT. Coverage of MRI—the scan of choice for more clinical situations than ever—has been greatly expanded, especially in areas related to arthritis. More three-dimensional CT scans have been added, particularly to areas covering trauma. Musculoskeletal ultrasound coverage has been increased. Practical Points to Remember appear at the end of each chapter to outline salient points. A companion website will offer the fully searchable text and images.

Book excerpt: This widely acclaimed reference work gives a comprehensive survey of all significant human malformations and related anomalies from the perspective of the clinician. The anomalies are organized by anatomical system and presented in a consistent manner, including details of the clinical presentation, epidemiology, embryology, treatment and prevention for each anomaly. When known, the molecular or other pathogenetic basis for the malformation is given. Most anomalies are illustrated by photographs or drawings. Specific malformations are linked to syndromes through the extensive use of differential diagnosis tables. Over a decade has passed since the first edition of this book was published, and the revised edition fully incorporates the advances made in the field during the intervening years.. It reflects new understanding of human developmental biology that has emerged from molecular, cytogenetic, and biochemical studies; new observations by clinicians as well as enhanced diagnostic and prevention capacities; and more accurate and comprehensive epidemiology. By condensing much of the information presented in the first volume of the previous edition, and exercising rigorous editorial control, Drs. Stevenson and Hall and their contributors have managed to update the book while reducing its size to that of a single volume. All clinicians and scientists interested in birth defects, including pediatricians, geneticists, genetic counselors, obstetricians, and pediatric pathologists, will find this book to be an invaluable source of information.
