This book could have used a similar leitmotiv: if you see what happens inside of a joint, you will be able to believe in your patient’s symptoms. But it would not be right. Arthroscopy is not out there just to make a diagnosis; it was not developed just to certify that the patient’s complaints are based on something physical. Arthroscopy was introduced to help patients, to make our treatments more reliable, to have better control of our p- cedures. It is merely a tool, indeed, but a marvelous one which nobody should und- score among all surgical options we have when it comes to solving wrist trauma. Seeing is understanding. This could be another leitmotiv for these authors’ c- paign to get more hand surgeons to incorporate arthroscopy in their practices. Certainly, mastering these newly developed techniques help understanding the patient’s problems. But again, that statement would also be misleading for not always what we see through the scope is the real cause of dysfunction. The enemy may be outside of the capsular enclosure. Indeed, arthroscopy provides lots of useful inf- mation, but the surgeon need not accept biased interpretations of the patient’s pr- lem based only on what appears on the screen.

Book excerpt: From about 5500 cal BC to soon after 5000 cal BC, the lifeways of the first farmers of central Europe, the LBK culture (Linearbandkeramik), are seen in distinctive practices of longhouse use, settlement forms, landscape choice, subsistence, material culture and mortuary rites. Within the five or more centuries of LBK existence a dynamic sequence of changes can be seen in, for instance, the expansion and increasing density of settlement, progressive regionalisation in pottery decoration, and at the end some signs of stress or even localised crisis. Although showing many features in common across its very broad distribution, however, the LBK phenomenon was not everywhere the same, and there is a complicated mixture of uniformity and diversity. This major study takes a strikingly large regional sample, from northern Hungary westwards along the Danube to Alsace in the upper Rhine valley, and addresses the question of the extent of diversity in the lifeways of developed and late LBK communities, through a wide-ranging study of diet, lifetime mobility, health and physical condition, the presentation of the bodies of the deceased in mortuary ritual. It uses an innovative combination of isotopic (principally carbon, nitrogen and strontium, with some oxygen), osteological and archaeological analysis to address difference and change across the LBK, and to reflect on cultural change in general.

This has finally led to the birth of a very new imaging modality -"contrast-enhanced sonography" (CEUS). Since 1999, the introduction of second-generation contrast agents has represented a decisive step towards the extensive clinical use of CEUS and has simultaneously made obsolete most, if not all, scientific publications available so far. This book is, to our knowledge, the first to deal entirely with second generation contrast agents and the most updated contrast-specific software for noncardiologic uses. The reasons why the liver has been chosen as the only "target" of the book are easily understandable by radiologists and hepatologists alike. The study of vascularity is the only purpose of CEUS, and the liver has a unique vascular system, with two different inflow systems resulting in a single outflow. Furthermore, the pathologically different focal liver lesions (FLLs) are mostly characterized by different "models" of vascularity: CEUS can mimic contrast enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, basing differential diagnosis on the morphological and temporal characteristics of enhancement, but with the additional unique advantage of the study being done in real-time.
