This book was released on 1984 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness of two similar polymer concrete materials was determined using several fracture mechanics configurations to show any influence of crack geometry on resistance to fracture in these materials. The testing configurations included a conventional straight-through notch in a flexure bar and various chevron-notched geometries in both flexure-bar and short-rod specimens. The materials were polymerized mixtures of monomers, anhydrous Type III portland cement, and silica sand. In one composition the monomers were styrene and trimethylolpropane-trimethacrylate; whereas, in the other composition, acrylonitrile was added as well. The fracture toughness was calculated from published stress-intensity coefficients for the straight-through notch which were adapted for use with a chevron notch by assuming that the derivative of the compliance with respect to crack length was the same for both notch types. Effects of varying chevronnotched angle, chevron-vertex position, and width of specimen in the crack plane were examined. Variation of these parameters to produce a wide variation in the width of the crack front shows minor if any influence on the fracture toughness measurements. In contrast, however, the calculated amount of crack extension for all the various specimen configurations indicates a trend of fracture toughness which is consistent with the concept of a rising crack-growth resistance curve for these materials.

Book Synopsis Short Bar Chevron-Notch Fracture Toughness of Bone Cement by : SK. Bhambri
Download or read book Short Bar Chevron-Notch Fracture Toughness of Bone Cement written by SK. Bhambri and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poly(methylmethacrylate) is used as a grouting agent in total joint arthroplasty. Fracture toughness of the relatively brittle bone cement is an important property determining the reliability and defect tolerance capability of the material. In the present study, fracture toughness of bone cement and commercial PMMA has been determined using a short bar chevron-notch test method. Chevron-notched short bar specimens were prepared with a notch molded-in during the polymerization process or by machining techniques. Specimen size and other test parameters were varied to determine variability of the results. In addition, parameters were also varied to simulate clinical practices.

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Concrete written by Alberto Carpinteri and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-08-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume on the mechanics of fracture of Portland cement concrete, the general theme is the connection between microstructural phenomena and macroscopic models. The issues addressed include techniques for observation over a wide range of scales, the influence of .microcracking on common measures of strength and de formability , and ultimately, the relationship between microstructural changes in concrete under load and its resistance to cracking. It is now commonly accepted that, in past attempts to force-fit the behavior of concrete into the rules of linear elastic fracture mechanics, proper attention has not been paid to scale effects. Clearly, the relationships among specimen size, crack length and opening, and characteristic material fabric dimensions have been, in comparison to their counterparts in metals, ceramics, and rocks, abused in concrete. Without a fundamental understanding of these relationships, additional testing in search of the elusive, single measure of fracture toughness has spawned additional confusion and frustration. No one is in a better position to document this observation than Professor Mindess.

Download or read book Fracture Failure Analysis of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites written by Sanjay Mavinkere Rangappa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unified approach to fracture behavior of natural and synthetic fiber-reinforced polymer composites on the basis of fiber orientation, the addition of fillers, characterization, properties and applications. In addition, the book contains an extensive survey of recent improvements in the research and development of fracture analysis of FRP composites that are used to make higher fracture toughness composites in various applications. The FRP composites are an emerging area in polymer science with many structural applications. The rise in materials failure by fracture has forced scientists and researchers to develop new higher strength materials for obtaining higher fracture toughness. Therefore, further knowledge and insight into the different modes of fracture behavior of FRP composites are critical to expanding the range of their application.

Book Synopsis Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens by : Yevgeny Deryugin
Download or read book Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens written by Yevgeny Deryugin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method is proposed to determine fracture toughness of structural materials according to the test data of non-standard small-size chevron-notched specimens. During the tests, loading diagrams and photographic images of the specimens taken in time intervals are obtained. The crack length is measured in the process of its initiation and propagation. The analytical expressions are obtained being based and derived from the constitutive equations of engineering fracture mechanics to determine the crack-driving force (specific fracture energy) and the stress intensity factor. The method allows us to exclude the periodic unloading of the specimen applied under standard test conditions to determine the change in specimen compliance, which is taken into account in constitutive equations at crack length increase. All necessary calculation parameters are determined according to the experimental data. The method allows us to certify fracture toughness of the material without restrictions regarding the amount of plastic deformation and in front of the crack tip and in the specimen as a whole. The examples are given to calculate the fracture toughness criteria for a number of structural materials characterized by the ability to plastic deformation and by the Young's modulus value.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Fractography by : Stephanie Difrancesco
Download or read book Quantitative Fractography written by Stephanie Difrancesco and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a 95% confidence level, the student t-test verified quantitative fractography fracture toughness was not statistically different from the standardized SENB or chevron flexure methods. Fracture toughness evaluated at different W/B sample ratios also did not change SENB K1c measurements. Although the chevron samples demonstrated unstable crack extension due to catastrophic failure from the chevron notch tip, the mean critical chevron fracture toughness was not statistically different from the other standardized techniques. Acetone also did not affect the K1c measurements regardless of technique. An ANOVA analysis performed at a 95% confidence level determined no statistical difference between fracture toughness measured with standardized techniques. A statistical difference, however, was detected when fracture toughness using quantitative fractography was applied to the failed SENB fracture features. Quantitative fractography on the failed SENB fracture features showed that the crack assumed to occur along the entire length of the SENB macro notch by the SENB standardized technique seldom occurs in reality. In contrast, failure in the tested samples typically resulted from semi-elliptical flaws which suggest the flaw size assumed by the standardized techniques is not appropriate. Modeling methods such as finite element analysis should be used in the future to combine independent notch, pre-crack, and semi-elliptical elements to model the observed behavior more effectively.
