Book excerpt: A summary of experimental data is presented for a series of fracture tests and tensile tests that were conducted on a 2324-T39 aluminum alloy material. Static tensile tests were performed to determine the stress-strain response for the material. For the fracture tests three thicknesses (B = 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9-inches) and two specimen types (middle crack tension and compact tension specimens) were used. The middle crack tension specimens were 12-inches wide, and the compact tension specimens were 2, 4, and 6-inches wide. The fracture tests were conducted in the L-T orientation (crack perpendicular to the rolling direction and load parallel to the rolling direction).Johnston, William M. and Newman, James C., Jr. (Technical Monitor)Langley Research CenterFRACTURING; ALUMINUM ALLOYS; TENSILE TESTS; STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIPS; STATIC TESTS; CRACKS; LOADS (FORCES); FRACTURE STRENGTH

Book excerpt: Fracture tests were conducted on middle crack tension (M(T)) and compact tension (C(T)) specimens of 7.6 mm-thick 2324-T39 aluminum in the L-T orientation. The configurations tested included 102 mm-wide M(T), 305 mm-wide M(T), 152 mm-wide C(T), and 102 mm-wide C(T) specimens. The measured critical crack-tip opening angle (CTOA) for the 102 mm-wide M(T) tests, the 305 mm-wide M(T) tests, and the 152 mm-wide C(T) tests, after a small amount of crack extension, were 4.4, 4.9, 5.1 degrees, respectively. The scatter involved with these measurements was about +/- 1 degree. Dawicke, David S. Unspecified Center NAS1-19708; RTOP 538-02-10-01...

This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of fracture test were conducted to determine the effects of specimen type specimen width and buckling on the fracture behavior of cracked thin sheet (0.063 inch thick) 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. A summary of the experimental measurements is presented for fracture tests conducted on two specimen types and various widths. Middle-crack tension M(T) and compact tension C(T) specimens were tested in the L-T and T-L orientation with duplicate tests for each condition. Four widths (W= 3, 12, 24, and 40 inch) were tested for the middle-crack tension specimens, and three widths (W=2, 4, and 6 inch) were tested for the compact tension specimens. The M(T) specimens were tested in either a constrained (out-of-plane displacements restrained with antibuckling guides) or unconstrained conditions were the specimen was free to buckle out of plane Measurements were made of load against crack extension for all specimens.Johnston, William M. and Newman, James C., Jr. (Technical Monitor)Langley Research CenterALUMINUM ALLOYS; FRACTURE MECHANICS; CRACK PROPAGATION; METAL SHEETS; LOADS (FORCES); DISPLACEMENT; BUCKLING

This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of fracture tests were conducted on Middle-crack tension M(T) and compact tension C(T) specimens to determine the effects of specimen type, specimen width, notch tip sharpness and buckling on the fracture behavior of cracked thin sheet (0.04 inch thick) 2024-T3 aluminum alloy material. A series of M(T) specimens were tested with three notch tip configurations: (1) a fatigue pre-cracked notch, (2) a 0.010-inch-diameter wire electrical discharge machined (EDM) notch, and (3) a EDM notch sharpened with a razor blade. The test procedures are discussed and the experimental results for failure stress, load vs. crack extension and the material stress-strain response are reported. Book Synopsis Dynamic Tear Tests of 3-In.-Thick Aluminum Alloys by : Ralph W Judy (Jr)
Download or read book Dynamic Tear Tests of 3-In.-Thick Aluminum Alloys written by Ralph W Judy (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamic Tear (DT) test was developed for characterization of the fracture-resistance properties of metals over the entire range of strength and toughness. The fracture-extension-resistance curve (R curve), which is determined by DT test procesures, indicates the fracture state (elastic or plastic) and the level of resistance to crack extension in terms of the required energy per unit extension. R curves were determined for four aluminum alloys in 3-in. thicknesses. These materials has been tested by standard fracture-mechanics procedures. R curves for full thickness and for 1-in. and 0.625-in. section sizes are compared to results of K(Ic) tests. The R-curve data are also presented in terms of an equation involving specimen cross-section dimensions and a constant which is related to the R-curve slope. (Author).

Book Synopsis New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports by : Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft
Download or read book New Materials for Next-Generation Commercial Transports written by Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.
