Book excerpt: This book presents the relationships between tensile damage and fracture, fatigue hysteresis loops, stress-rupture, fatigue life and fatigue limit stress, and stochastic loading stress. Ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) possess low material density (i.e., only 1/4 - 1/3 of high-temperature alloy) and high-temperature resistance, which can reduce cooling air and improve structure efficiency. Understanding the failure mechanisms and internal damage evolution represents an important step to ensure reliability and safety of CMCs. This book investigates damage and fracture of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) subjected to stochastic loading, including: (1) tensile damage and fracture of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic loading; (2) fatigue hysteresis loops of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic loading; (3) stress rupture of fiber-reinforced CMCs with stochastic loading at intermediate temperature; (4) fatigue life prediction of fiber-reinforced CMCs subjected to stochastic overloading stress at elevated temperature; and (5) fatigue limit stress prediction of fiber-reinforced CMCs with stochastic loading. This book helps the material scientists and engineering designers to understand and master the damage and fracture of ceramic-matrix composites under stochastic loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern scientific and technological fields are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature, and the field of fibrous composites is no exception. Unlike fibre-reinforced plastics, the family of metal- and ceramic-based composites is still quite a new group of materials with a large variety of mechanical and physical properties. Up until now it has been difficult to produce these materials as the necessary technical information has not been well documented. The main purpose of this book is to link together fabrication, structure and properties chains, so as to clarify which structure provides the necessary properties, and how one can attain the correct composite structure. To this end, the book not only contains topics of a purely technical nature, but also a description of the failure mechanics of metal- and ceramic-matrix composites, as this is the key to understanding the structure-properties segment of the chain mentioned. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a general view of composites with the accent on metal- and ceramic-matrix composites. It also contains a brief description of modern fibres and composites and can be considered, at least for beginners, as a starting point for further study. Part II looks at the composite microstructures considered to be either optimal or reasonable in resisting a particular loading. Finally Part II describes a variety of mechanical, physical, and chemical potential for organizing these microstructures. Experimental data on technologies, material structures, and material properties are used throughout the book to support theoretical conclusions or to obtain important physical parameters.

Book excerpt: Fatigue damage accumulation and failure modes of several unidirectional and angle-ply SCS-6 fiber-reinforced titanium matrix composites are reviewed. The fatigue damage characteristics of the notched and unnotched composites were classified using several schematic diagrams based upon the constituent's properties and loading conditions. Quantitative relationships between the microstructural damage and stiffness reduction were also established. A shear-lag model incorporating a damage function (which involved the cracking density and length, fiber/matrix frictional stress, and debonding length) was also used to predict residual stiffness of the composites.

Book excerpt: The primary objectives of this research are fabrication of a tough fiber reinforced ceramic composite, study of the fracture resistance behavior (R - curve) under fatigue loading, and in situ study of the crack propagation under fatigue conditions both at room and elevated temperatures. Silicon carbide fiber (SCS-6) reinforced zircon (ZrSiO 4) matrix composites are used in this study. The composite is fabricated by uniaxially aligning SiC fibers into a perform and then incorporating the zircon matrix by a tape casting and lamination technique. The green body is then consolidated by hot pressing at about 1640C in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. Thus, dense composites with uniform fiber distribution and good mechanical properties are fabricated. A novel in situ technique is used to study the crack propagation in the matrix of the composite under fatigue conditions. In situ crack propagation and fracture resistance behavior (R - curve) of these ceramic composite samples are studied both experimentally and numerically under fatigue load conditions between room temperature and 1400ʻC. The stress intensity value at crack initiation decreased with increasing temperature. The fracture resistance results showed a rising R - curve behavior with a decreasing value of the fracture resistance at elevated temperatures. In other words the slope of the R curve decreased as temperature increased, and this effect is very dramatic at 1400ʻC. Numerical analyses/iterations, based on the currently available micromechanical models, are done to determine the relationship between the bridging stress function and the R - curve behavior of the composite. Also, the effect of residual stress and constituent properties like fiber strength, interfacial shear stress etc., on the bridging stress function is also systematically studied both at room and elevated temperature. Fiber strength, Weibull modulus, and interfacial shear stress are found to have a significant effect on the bridging stress functions. Among the three parameters, fiber strength has the most dominant effect on the bridging stress functions. A comparison of the experimental and numerically calculated results on fracture behavior showed that numerical calculations matched reasonably well with the experimental R curve values over the temperature range of 20 - 1400ʻC.

It investigates tensile damage and fracture, fatigue hysteresis, and the properties of interfaces subjected to cyclic fatigue loading. Further, it predicts fatigue life at room and elevated temperatures using newly developed damage models and methods, and it analyzes and compares damage, fracture and fatigue behavior of different fiber performs: unidirectional, cross-ply, 2D and 2.5D woven. The developed models and methods can be used to predict the damage and lifetime of ceramic-matrix composites during applications on hot section components.Ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) are high-temperature structural materials with the significant advantages of high specific strength, high specific modulus, high temperature resistance and good thermal stability, which play a crucial role in the development of high thrust weight ratio aero engines. The critical nature of the application of these advanced materials makes comprehensive characterization a necessity, and as such this book provides designers with essential information pertaining not only to the strength of the materials, but also to their fatigue and damage characteristics.

A fatigue cracking map for several unidirectional SCS-6-fiber-reinforced titanium and titanium aluminide composites under tension-tension fatigue loading has been developed. The map is constructed based upon the fiber strength to interfacial shear strength ratio versus the applied maximum stress intensity factor. Also, the effect of fiber bridging on the effective crack driving force in the matrix is analyzed using the shear-lag model and finite element analysis.

Book excerpt: The bridging fatigue crack growth damage mechanisms in a unidirectional SiC/Ti MMC include matrix cracking, fiber/matrix interface debonding and sliding along bridging fibers and fracture of these fibers. The basic components of these mechanisms are examined in this program. The evolution features of residual stresses indicated that stress relaxation occurred in the Ti matrix phase of the composite following post-fabrication cool down to 600 00. Parametric study of the SiC fiber coating materials showed that the effective residual stress component has an inverse relationship with the thickness of the fiber reaction zone. The debonding shear strength of the composite is determined by the localized shear stress distribution along the fiber/matrix interface at the onset of debonding. An interphase debonding model, which combine fracture mechanics with FE results on interphase shear stress and bridging fiber traction range, is proposed to establish a distribution of debonding lengths along a fiber-bridged matrix crack length as a function of temperature. The driving force for the interface debond crack, however, has an inverse relationship with the test temperature. The concurrent damage events of fiber stress evolution and continuous fiber strength degradation were postulated into a fiber fracture criterion to describe the fracture process of a bridging fiber. Furthermore, the fiber crack density has been correlated with the density of crack initiation sites observed in the interphase region along the reinforcing fibers in a SCS-6/Ti-21S composite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low cycle axial fatigue properties of 25 and 44-fiber volume percent SiC/Ti(6Al-4V) composites were measured at room temperature and at 650°C. At room temperature, the S-N curves for the composites showed no anticipated improvement over bulk matrix behavior. Although axial and transverse tensile strength results suggest a degradation in silicon-carbide fiber strength during composite fabrication, it appears that the poor fatigue life of the composites was caused by a reduced fatigue resistance of the reinforced Ti(6Al-4V) matrix. Microstructural studies indicate that the reduced matrix behavior was due, in part, to the presence of flawed and fractured fibers created near the specimen surfaces by preparation techniques. Another possible contributing factor is the large residual tensile stresses that can exist in fiber-reinforced matrices. These effects as well as the effects of fatigue testing at high temperature are discussed.
