Book excerpt: Recognizing the importance of a successful preceptorship experience, the purpose of this study was to illuminate student nurses' lived experiences inside the student-preceptor relationship. Through better understanding of the student perspective of this relational process, it is suggested here that the preceptorship model can be used more effectively as a learning strategy that increases student confidence and competence and supports the student-to-graduate nurse transition. A qualitative research approach using hermeneutical phenomenological methodology was utilized to explore and gain understanding of this relationship from a students' perspective. The lens for exploring this relationship was a humanistic approach to nursing education (Bevis and Watson, 1989). Semi-structured interviews conducted with a purposive sample of six participants led to the discovery of lived experience themes and situational themes. The study's findings are subsumed under the idea of the student's fragile confidence. These respective findings are presented through lived experience themes and situational themes. The situational themes affected the student's lived experience. The five lived experience themes that emerged were: feeling cared for or feeling uncared for; feeling comfort or feeling angst; feeling confident or feeling self-doubt leading to insecurity; feeling motivated or feeling less motivated; and finally feeling grateful or feeling disappointed.

In the United States, numerous nursing boards have restructured their clinical guidelines for licensure to include high-fidelity patient simulation as an acceptable form of clinical education. In response to these educational changes, a thorough review of the literature was performed and revealed a gap related to student outcomes when combining traditional clinical education and high-fidelity patient simulation during clinical courses. The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a richer understanding of how a student's clinical education impacts his or her educational experiences. Through a phenomenological approach, I examined the lived experiences of 12 nursing students who had completed a medical-surgical clinical course. Data was analyzed utilizing Moustakas' (1994) seven steps of data analysis and revealed six themes to include (a) collaboration/team approach, (b) confidence, (c) influence of the instructor, (d) observation, (e) realism, and (f) reflection. Results of this phenomenological study are timely as states across the nation are considering substantial changes to their clinical education guidelines and policies.
