Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion covers the proceedings of the Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on August 27 to September 1, 1962, under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. The book focuses on the processes and reactions involved in combustion. The selection first offers information on flame strength of propane-oxygen flames at low pressures in turbulent flow and mixing and flow in ducted turbulent jets. Topics include radial profile of the jetting velocity, radial growth of the jet, and mixing zones of a ducted jet. The text then elaborates on turbulent flame studies in two-dimensional open burners; turbulent mass transfer and rates of combustion in confined turbulent flames; and flame stabilization in a boundary layer. The publication examines the theoretical study of properties of laminar steady state flames as a function of properties of their chemical components and spectra of alkali metal-organic halide flames. The text then takes a look at the thermal radiation theory for plane flame propagation in coal dust clouds; flame characteristics of the diborane-hydrazine system; and studies of the combustion of dimethyl hydrazine and related compounds. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the processes and reactions involved in combustion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to understanding combustion, the burning of a substance that produces heat and often light, in microgravity environments-i.e., environments with very low gravity such as outer space. Readers are presented with a compilation of worldwide findings from fifteen years of research and experimental tests in various low-gravity environments, including drop towers, aircraft, and space.Microgravity Combustion is unique in that no other book reviews low- gravity combustion research in such a comprehensive manner. It provides an excellent introduction for those researching in the fields of combustion, aerospace, and fluid and thermal sciences.* An introduction to the progress made in understanding combustion in a microgravity environment* Experimental, theoretical and computational findings of current combustion research* Tutorial concepts, such as scaling analysis* Worldwide microgravity research findings

Book excerpt: Propulsion Re-Entry Physics deals with the physics of propulsion re-entry and covers topics ranging from inductive magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) propulsion systems to launch systems and orbiting maneuvering systems. Problems of re-entry aerodynamics are considered, along with interaction problems in hypersonic fluid dynamics. Comprised of 31 chapters, this volume begins with a detailed account of the quasi-steady adiabatic vaporization and subsequent exothermic decomposition of a pure monopropellant spherical droplet in the absence of free and forced convection. The discussion then turns to results of calculations on MPD machines working in the intermittent and in the continuous mode; inductive plasma accelerators with electromagnetic standing waves; and spherical rocket motors for space and upper stage propulsion. Subsequent chapters focus on pulsed plasma satellite control systems; drag and stability of various Mars entry configurations; hypersonic laminar boundary layers around slender bodies; and effects of an entry probe gas envelope on experiments concerning planetary atmospheres. This book will appeal to students, practitioners, and research workers interested in propulsion re-entry and the accompanying physics.

Book excerpt: Tables are presented containing 69,000 values of a set of characteristic functions which first arose in problems of supersonic wing-body interference. The tables are useful in problems of supersonic flow involving aerodynamic shapes which are wholly or in part quasi-cylinders of nearly circular cross section. A number of uses are described in the aerodynamics of bodies alone, body-body or shock-body interference, wing-body interference, the vortex-panel interference. Three illustrative examples are worked out in detail. First, the pressure field due to fuselage indentation is calculated and presented in a form independent of Mach number. Secondly, the tables are applied to a problem involving a previously unpublished solution to the Navier-Stokes equations; namely, the boundary-layer profiles of a circular cylinder moved impulsively with a constant axial force in a viscous incompressible fluid. In the final example, the wave drag of corrugated circular cylinders is calculated as a function of the number of corrugations and their wave length. Several nonaerodynamic applications are pointed out in the fields of acoustics and heat conduction. Generally speaking, the tables are applicable to boundary-value problems of the second kind involving the wave equation in three dimensions with approximately circular cylindrical boundaries or involving the unsteady heat-conduction equation in two space dimensions with nearly circular boundaries.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the take-off, landing, and hovering-flight characteristics of a four-engine-transport, vertical take-off airplane has been conducted with a remotely controlled free-flight model. The model had four propellers distributed along the wing with thrust axes parallel to the fuselage axis. In order to produce direct lift for hovering flight, the propeller slipstream was deflected downward about 70 degrees by a full-span 65-percent-chord flap deflected 90 degrees and eight extensible vanes arranged above the wing in a cascade relation.
