Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Message of Governor Ernest Lister to the Fourteenth Legislature, 1915 In connection with the matter of the rapid increase in the number to be cared for at our state institutions, investigation shows that there are now confined at the Western Washington Hospital for the Insane approximately 450 aliens and at the Eastern Washington Hospital for the Insane about 350 aliens. Practically all of these have resided in the United States more than three years, so that they cannot now be deported at the expense of the Federal Immigration Department. I have not secured the figures covering the Northern Hospital for the Insane. This institution, however, would probably maintain the same relative proportion to the total number confined there.
