Book excerpt: In harmonic analysis on a LCA group G, the term "Fourier transform" has a variety of meanings. It refers to various objects constructed in special ways, depending on the desired theory. The standard theories include the theory of Fourier-Stieltjes transforms, the Plancherel theorem, and the Bochner theorem can be viewed as another aspect of this phenomenon. However, except for special cases, we know of no attempt in the literature to undertake the desired synthesis. The purpose of the present work is to give a systematic account of such an attempt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a master mathematical expositor, this classic text reflects the results of the intense period of research and development in the area of Fourier analysis in the decade preceding its first publication in 1962. The enduringly relevant treatment is geared toward advanced undergraduate and graduate students and has served as a fundamental resource for more than five decades. The self-contained text opens with an overview of the basic theorems of Fourier analysis and the structure of locally compact Abelian groups. Subsequent chapters explore idempotent measures, homomorphisms of group algebras, measures and Fourier transforms on thin sets, functions of Fourier transforms, closed ideals in L1(G), Fourier analysis on ordered groups, and closed subalgebras of L1(G). Helpful Appendixes contain background information on topology and topological groups, Banach spaces and algebras, and measure theory.

Book excerpt: This book is a continuation of vol. I (Grundlehren vol. 115, also available in softcover), and contains a detailed treatment of some important parts of harmonic analysis on compact and locally compact abelian groups. From the reviews: "This work aims at giving a monographic presentation of abstract harmonic analysis, far more complete and comprehensive than any book already existing on the subject...in connection with every problem treated the book offers a many-sided outlook and leads up to most modern developments. Carefull attention is also given to the history of the subject, and there is an extensive bibliography...the reviewer believes that for many years to come this will remain the classical presentation of abstract harmonic analysis." Book excerpt: Quasicrystals are non-periodic solids that were discovered in 1982 by Dan Shechtman, Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry 2011. The mathematics that underlies this discovery or that proceeded from it, known as the theory of Aperiodic Order, is the subject of this comprehensive multi-volume series. This second volume begins to develop the theory in more depth. A collection of leading experts, among them Robert V. Moody, cover various aspects of crystallography, generalising appropriately from the classical case to the setting of aperiodically ordered structures. A strong focus is placed upon almost periodicity, a central concept of crystallography that captures the coherent repetition of local motifs or patterns, and its close links to Fourier analysis. The book opens with a foreword by Jeffrey C. Lagarias on the wider mathematical perspective and closes with an epilogue on the emergence of quasicrystals, written by Peter Kramer, one of the founders of the field.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors provide a thorough and organized presentation of a substantial portion of current research in abstract harmonic analysis carried out on three continents, in a field that has been characterized by multiple rediscoveries of results and concepts by authors unaware of the work of others. The book recasts the classical theory of H. Bohr of almost periodic functions in a form sufficiently abstract and general as to encompass not only Bohr's original theory, but also more recent manifestations of almost periodicity in the work of Wiener, Stepanov, Besicovitch, Eberlein, and Jacobs.

The articles consist of both survey style and original research papers, are written by experts in thearea and present a succinct account of recent and up-to-date knowledge. The topic is interdisciplinary by nature and involves areas such as measure and integration (scalar, vector and operator-valued), classical and harmonic analysis, operator theory, non-commutative integration, andfunctional analysis. The material is of interest to experts, young researchers and postgraduate students.

Its roots are in locally compact groups and group representations, but it requires a considerable amount of functional analysis, mainly Banach algebras. In recent years it has made a major connection to the subject of operator spaces, to the enrichment of both. In this book two leading experts provide a road map to roughly 50 years of research detailing the role that the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras have played in not only helping to better understand the nature of locally compact groups, but also in building bridges between abstract harmonic analysis, Banach algebras, and operator algebras. All of the important topics have been included, which makes this book a comprehensive survey of the field as it currently exists. Since the book is, in part, aimed at graduate students, the authors offer complete and readable proofs of all results. The book will be well received by the community in abstract harmonic analysis and will be particularly useful for doctoral and postdoctoral mathematicians conducting research in this important and vibrant area.

Book excerpt: This book helps develop a better understanding of how researchers from different scientific backgrounds view models and uncertainty. It provides key steps in fostering and encouraging interdisciplinary research, which is vital in addressing several big issues that society faces today, such as climate change, longevity, financial and actuarial risk management. To make progress in these areas, researchers must develop an understanding of differing perspectives and methods of those working in other disciplines. This title presents the views and understandings of eminent people in their respective fields through interviews on the topic of modelling and uncertainty. Each expert was asked the same set of questions to help readers understand the similarities and differences existing between various disciplines. It also helps to bridge some of the gaps encountered by those carrying out inter- and multi-disciplinary research and suggests new approaches to modelling and uncertainty quantification.

Areas covered include: Ordinary and partial differential systems; Optimal control of deterministic and stochastic evolution equations; Control theory of Partial Differential Equations (PDE's); Optimization methods in PDE's with numerous applications to mechanics and physics; Inverse problems; Stability theory; Abstract optimization problems; Calculus of variations; Numerical treatment of solutions to differential equations and related optimization problems. These research fields are under very active development and the present volume should be of interest to students and researchers working in applied mathematics or in system engineering. This volume contains selected contributions presented during the International Working Conference on Analysis and Optimization of Differential Systems, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Constanta, Romania in September 2002. Among the aims of this conference was the creation of new international contacts and collaborations, taking advantage of the new developments in Eastern Europe, particularly in Romania. The conference benefited from the support of the European Union via the EURROMMAT program.

Rowland Higgins (1935-2020) made a substantial impact on many mathematical fields through his work on sampling theory, his deep knowledge of its history, and his service to the community. This volume is a tribute to his work and legacy, featuring chapters written by distinguished mathematicians that explore cutting-edge research in sampling, approximation, signal analysis, and other related areas. An introductory chapter provides a biography of Higgins that explores his rich and unique life, along with a bibliography of his papers; a brief history of the SampTA meetings – of which he was a Founding Member – is also included. The remaining articles are grouped into four sections – classical sampling, theoretical extensions, frame theory, and applications of sampling theory – and explore Higgins’ contributions to these areas, as well as some of the latest developments.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematician on par with the greatest in the century, Norbert Wiener was a universal thinker of colossal proportions. This book contains the proceedings of the Norbert Wiener Centenary Congress held at Michigan State University on November 27-December 2, 1994. The aim of the Congress was to reveal the depth and strong coherence of thought that runs through Wiener's legacy, and to exhibit its continuation in on-going research. This volume brings together the great minds who have furthered Wiener's ideas in physics, stochastics, harmonic analysis, philosophy, prosthesis and cybernetics. The presentations coherently lay out the developments of the subjects from their inception. This volume provides an excellent pathway for new investigators who may wish to pursue these developments by following the footsteps of world experts. There is no other book available in which experts in the various fields in which Wiener worked have presented his thoughts and contributions insuch a coherent and lucid manner.
