Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years of Personal Reminiscences of the War No merely historical events will be related in this book the history 01 the war has been often repeated, and it would take a far abler pen than mine to trace correctly the movements of a large army, as it was constantly moving over thousands of miles in different sections of country. I leave all that to the historian, whose writings I gladly peruse with interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... 1862, when thirty-eight thousand men were camped on the shore of the Tennessee, ready to march at the word of command? Saturday is always a welcome day to the soldier when in camp. No tiresome drill on Saturday, nor everlasting roll-call; on the morrow he can write to the loved ones at homo. They felt secure as they lay down on this Saturday night, to dream of wifo and babe. Everything about them was calm and lovely. The scenery was beautiful, the orchards were already in full bloom, the grass was green, birds were singing in the dense woods; the odor of wild flowers was in the air. Everything told that spring had come. CHAPTER III. THE BATTLE OF SHILOH. At the dawn of day the long roll called to arms, and in a few minutes every man was ready to move. A dispatch was sent to General Grant at Savannah to bring him to the scene of action. I stood at the bow when the General's orderly led his beautiful black horse off the boat, and the General, with an unlit cigar in his mouth, waved a salute to the crowded boats, mounted his horse and galloped off up the hill. Pittsburg Landing is only a " landing," to which the farmers hauled their crops for transportation to other points. A stretch of level ground skirted the river; this was churned into a mortar bed by the teams that had hauled army supplies, and the mud was a foot or more deep. Back of this level was a steep high hill, and the soldiers had made roads across the level through the woods and up the hillside and for several miles back from the river, leading to the camps of the different divisions. There was one old house on the top of the hill overlooking the river--the only one for two miles from the river. While the heavy firing by the gun-boats up the river was in progress, I started...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the War The present volume is the outgrowth of a series of articles written by the author for publication in the Northern Christian Advocate. At the urgent request of many friends they are now published in book form, with the earnest hope that the story of privation, suffering, and danger - of valor, heroism, and loyalty - may serve to enkindle in the hearts of all who read this record an appreciation of these sacrifices and an undying love of our great, united, and free country, which is the strongest bond of our national unity and existence. In preparing these sketches the author has freely consulted Chaplain Craft's admirable history of the One Hundred and Forty-first Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, has also been greatly aided by his diary, which was kept during the entire three years' service, but has been obliged to draw from memory for the principal details. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of Robert E. Lee’s Special Orders No. 191 is one of the Civil War’s enduring mysteries. In this meticulous study, Alexander Rossino presents a bold new interpretation of the evidence surrounding the orders’ creation, distribution, and loss outside Frederick, Maryland, in September 1862. Rossino makes extensive use of primary sources to explore these subjects and other important questions related to the orders, including why General Lee thought his army could operate north of the Potomac until winter; why Lee found it necessary to seize the Federal garrison at Harpers Ferry; what Lee hoped to accomplish after capturing Harpers Ferry; where Corporal Barton Mitchell of the 27th Indiana found the Lost Orders; and if D. H. Hill or someone else was to blame for losing the orders. The result is a well-documented reassessment that sheds new light while challenging long-held assumptions. Calamity at Frederick is the Confederate companion to The Tale Untwisted by Gene M. Thorp and Alexander Rossino, which told the story from the Union perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History isn't always written by the winners... Twenty-first-century controversies over Confederate monuments attest to the enduring significance of our nineteenth-century Civil War. As Lincoln knew, the meaning of America itself depends on how we understand that fratricidal struggle. As soon as the Army of Northern Virginia laid down its arms at Appomattox, a group of Confederate officers took up their pens to refight the war for the history books. They composed a new narrative—the Myth of the Lost Cause—seeking to ennoble the sacrifice and defeat of the South, which popular historians in the twentieth century would perpetuate. Unfortunately, that myth would distort the historical imagination of Americans, north and south, for 150 years. In this balanced and compelling correction of the historical record, Edward Bonekemper helps us understand the Myth of the Lost Cause and its effect on the social and political controversies that are still important to all Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eyes of many historians, Union general George B. McClellan single-handedly did more damage to the Union war effort than any other individual--including Confederate commander Robert E. Lee. Promoting his own ideas and career regardless of the consequences, McClellan eventually became a thorn in the side of President Lincoln. Removed from command on November 5, 1862, McClellan left a legacy of excessive caution that continued to affect the Army of the Potomac. From West Point to Antietam, this volume examines McClellan's army career and especially how his decisions affected the course of the Civil War. Union actions are examined in detail with special emphasis on the roles McClellan played--or did not play. Excerpts from McClellan's orders and correspondence provide a contemporary picture and motives for his actions. An appendix examines the treatment given McClellan by various historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A welcome new account of Stuart’s fateful ride during the 1863 Pennsylvania campaign . . . well researched, vividly written, and shrewdly argued.” —Mark Grimsley, author of And Keep Moving On June 1863. The Gettysburg Campaign is in its opening hours. Harness jingles and hoofs pound as Confederate cavalryman James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart leads his three brigades of veteran troopers on a ride that triggers one of the Civil War’s most bitter and enduring controversies. Instead of finding glory and victory-two objectives with which he was intimately familiar, Stuart reaped stinging criticism and substantial blame for one of the Confederacy’s most stunning and unexpected battlefield defeats. In Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart’s Controversial Ride to Gettysburg, Eric J. Wittenberg and J. David Petruzzi objectively investigate the role Stuart’s horsemen played in the disastrous campaign. It is the first book ever written on this important and endlessly fascinating subject. Did the plumed cavalier disobey General Robert E. Lee’s orders by stripping the army of its “eyes and ears?” Was Stuart to blame for the unexpected combat that broke out at Gettysburg on July 1? Authors Wittenberg and Petruzzi, widely recognized for their study and expertise of Civil War cavalry operations, have drawn upon a massive array of primary sources, many heretofore untapped, to fully explore Stuart’s ride, its consequences, and the intense debate among participants shortly after the battle, through early post-war commentators, and among modern scholars. The result is a richly detailed study jammed with incisive tactical commentary, new perspectives on the strategic role of the Southern cavalry, and fresh insights on every horse engagement, large and small, fought during the campaign.
