Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burma, Vol. 1 of 2: Past and Present With Personal Reminiscences of the Country Tms work is written much in the form of an autobiography, and a preface, therefore, is hardly necessary; because, as the author writes principally in the first person, he explains as he goes along what otherwise would have been expressed in a preface. A few preliminary remarks, however, appear somewhat desirable, not by way of preface, but of apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burma Under British Rule and Before, Vol. 1 of 2 The plan of the book was sketched early in 1896, and several chapters of it were then written, but press of official work prevented its completion till the leisure oof furlough from 1898 - 1900. In the meantime the official Gazetteer of Upper Burma has been published, Wth also deals with many of the matters here treated of. The two works, however, cannot in any way clash. The one is an official record, the other is an independent publication meant for such of the general public as may feel an interest in Burma or in its administration by the British. If there be any similarity between portions of the two books with regard to matters specially affecting Upper Burma, this can only be due to the fact that the actual historical data have been obtained from the same sources, because neither author has yet seen the work of the other. The scheme which has been followed was to treat each subject comprehensively in a chapter by itself. One drawback to this method is the necessity for occasional repetitions and references to previous pages, but the advantages seemed to outweigh this disadvantage. The French position in indo-china has of course been dealt with at considerable length. But even since the chapter dealing with Britain and France in Further India and Western China has been passed for press, matters affecting French railway enterprise in south-western China have again advanced. The latest account of the existing position will be found in an article on The French Railway into Yum-nan in the Times of july 22, 1901, to which the attention of those specially interested in this subject may be drawn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leopard's Leap: A Story of Burma The good ship Devonshire of the County Line was making her way with sober haste through the tepid waters of the Red Sea. It was ten o'clock of an October night and the heat was tempered by a southerly breeze. The after-dinner promenaders had ceased their uneasy effort to get exercise without colliding with each other or with the chairs that strewed the deck, and had settled down to cards, conversation or the knitting of mufflers for the Indian troops in France. A few passengers here and there leaned over the side to watch the phosphorescent waters rolling like liquid silver from the ship's dark bows, or to admire the graceful proportions of the Unicorn, which they fondly believed, on the assurance of a waggish officer, to be the Southern Cross. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden of Allah, Vol. 1 of 2 But Domini, with wide-open eyes, was staring from her big, square pillow at the red brick floor Of her bedroom, on which stood various trunks marked by the Officials Of the Douane. There were two windows in the room look ing out towards the Place de la Marine, below which lay the station. Closed persz'ennes Of brownish-green, blistered wood protected them. One Of these windows was Open. Yet the candle at Domini' s bedside burnt steadily. The night was warm and quiet, without wind. AS She lay there, Domini still felt the movement of the sea. The passage had been a bad one. The ship, crammed with French recruits for the African regiments, had pitched and rolled almost Incessantly for thirty-one hours, and Domini and most Of the recruits had been ill. Domini had had an'inner cabin, with a skylight Opening onto the lower deck, and had heard above the sound Of the waves and winds their groans and exclamations, rough laughter, and half-timid, half-defiant conversations as She shook in her berth. At Marseilles she had seen them come On board, One by one, dressed in every variety Of poor costume, each One looking anxiously around to see what the others were like, each one carrying a mean yellow or black bag or a carefully-tied bundle. On the wharf stood a Zouave, in tremendous red trousers and a fez, among great heaps Of dull brown woollen rugs. And as the recruits came hesitat ingly along he stopped them with a sharp word, examined the tickets they held out, gave each one a rug, and pointed to the gangway that led from the wharf to the vessel. Domini, then leaning over the rail Of the upper deck, had noticed the different expressions with which the recruits looked at the Zouave. TO all Of them he was a pheno menon, a mystery Of Africa and Of the new life for which they were embarking. He stood there impudently and indifi'erently among the woollen rugs, his red fez pushed well back on his short, black hair cut en 6mm, his bronzed face twisted into a grimace Of fiery contempt, throwing, with his big and muscular arms, rug after rug to the anxious young peasants who filed before him. They all gazed at his legs in the billowing red trousers; some like children regarding a Jack-in-the-box which had just sprung up into view, others like ignorant, but superstitious, people who had unexpectedly come upon a shrine by the way side. One Or two seemed disposed to laugh nervously, as the very stupid laugh at anything they see for the first time. But fear seized them. They refrained convulsively and shambled on to the gangway, looking sideways, like fowls, and holding their rugs awkwardly to their breasts with their dirty, red hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels of Doctor and Madame Helfer, Vol. 1 of 2: In Syria, Mesopotamia, Burmah and Other Lands This memoir and autobiography derives increased interest from the exciting narrative of the Euphrates Expedition, under the late General, then Colonel Chesney, in which helfer and his wife took part, as well as from the graphic and lively descriptions of the life of Oriental women, into the mysteries of which a lady traveller could obtain glimpses denied to a man. We are therefore grateful to the Countess for not having longer withheld the memoirs of a meritorious Austrian naturalist and traveller, with whose destiny, during a series of eventful years, her own was bound up, and we doubt not that the public will welcome a work which contains so much that is instructive 'and entertaining.
