Book excerpt: Volume one (which is a revised reprint of a book first published in 1997 that sold 10,000 copies) covers a wide variety of 4WD tracks (some of them very tough indeed). The book has no photographs but includes a free CD which has photos taken all along the routes and details for the GPS user. (This was intended as an additional selling point, but I suspect it is a bit beyond the average 4WD driver.) The author, Andy Cockroft, is very well known and active in 4WD circles. The North Island books have always been slower sellers than their South Island equivalents because there just aren't that many good places to go to, though one would think there are more 4WDs in the north. Maybe they are all stuck in traffic jams in Remuera.

Download or read book 4WD South Island written by Ken Sibly and published by Longacre Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised edition of the original South Island off-road guidebook, 4WD South Island: 77 Off Road Adventures, which hit the bookshops in 1996. Thousands of copies of that book, and of the second volume, 4WD South Island: 93 New Off Road Adventures, are in thousands of gloveboxes, and from your feedback we know they are getting plenty of use. As well as re-traveling and revising the original 77 routes, the authors have now included 30 new ones from all over the South Island. The tracks move through farmland and bush valleys, climb to the crater rims of Banks Peninsula, follow historic stagecoach or stock routes, wind through beech forests and ancient rainforests, across the blasted, treeless tussock lands of Otago and up and down Canterbury' S braided rivers. Some of them will challenge even the most intrepid adventurer, while others will serve as an introduction for the newcomer to the wonderful world of four-wheel-driving. For those new to the series, this book is for those of you who own a 4WD or are planning to buy or rent one and are itching to put it to the test greater than the battle of the supermarket parking lot. It will tell you not only how to get to some of the South Island's finest 'wild places', but more important, how to get home again safely. The guide to competent off-road driving in Park One, which has been expanded and updated, covers everything you will need to know about your vehicle, driving techniques for difficult terrain, recovering a vehicle in trouble--and it offers lots more down-to-earth and practical advice.

Book excerpt: This volume introduces 93 new 4WD roads and tracks throughout the South Island, described in the same meticulous detail as in the first volume. Some are on public land, some on private land where owners are prepared to share their environment with recreational four-wheel-drivers. Full contact information is supplied. Among the routes are several longer trips for the serious off-roader, as well as a number of easily accessible expeditions for the day-tripper. As before, each route description comes with a map and all the information needed to ensure that every journey is an exciting -- and safe -- adventure. The plain-English guide to competent off-road driving in Part One has been expanded and updated. Of course in your enthusiasm and excitement about hitting the dirt tracks of the back country, you may not read all the information about getting to know your vehicle, essential and optional extras, preparing for a trip, driving techniques for difficult terrain, recovering a vehicle in trouble -- and all the other basic down-to-each advice the authors provide. We recommend you do, and furthermore, we guarantee that you'll be very grateful to have a copy of this book in your glovebox next time you are stranded in river gravel or have sunk to your axles in some good South Island mud and don't know what to do next!

Book excerpt: "This book is for people who enjoy driving and exploring the stories of our back roads, but most of all it is for people who love New Zealand, whether they choose to do it from behind the wheel of their SUV or the comfort of their sofa. Stories from our Backroads: North Island will introduce you to some fascinating stories of tracks, trails and back roads across the North Island. Many of them cross through forgotten parts of the country, and all of them have their own rich and exciting stories. Whether they follow the route of Māori foot trails or the path of early European settlers, each adds something to our history. For example, the track up the Kauaeranga Valley has seen Māori inhabitants, who named the place after the river in flood - Kauarenga means 'no crossing here' - then came the kauri fellers, who were followed by gold miners. All of them adding something new to the valley's story"--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Few experiences compare with navigating a sea kayak through a large sandy bay lined with oyster-shell beaches, past golden sand dunes into rough ocean waters, then surfing back onto a wind-swept beach at sunset.”—from the Introduction Half of the nearly 400-mile Texas coastline is flanked by barrier islands. Behind them, large and small bays shelter estuarine marshes, oyster-reef communities, and sea grass meadows that teem with wildlife, creating a bird watcher's and angler's paradise. For an intimate encounter with these natural treasures, no other water craft can compare to a kayak. Veteran kayaker John Whorff’s Kayaking the Texas Coast is an essential guide for beginning and experienced kayakers to the many miles of shoreline that surround the shallow bays, lagoons, and islands of the Texas coast. Novices will appreciate this book’s detailed information about where to paddle and camp, what to see, and where to obtain additional information about safety and route planning. Accomplished kayakers will enjoy Whorff’s enticing route descriptions and other pertinent details on paddling the Texas coastline. Opening with an extended introductory text that covers kayaks and equipment, safety considerations and emergencies, camping dos and don’ts, and helpful resources, Kayaking the Texas Coast also lists useful websites and guidebooks. In the main portion of the text, the coast is organized into ten destinations, from the Galveston Bay complex in the north to Boca Chica State Park in the south. For each of these destinations, Whorff provides information on navigational aids, planning considerations, accommodations, and directions to launch sites before describing various paddling routes within each destination—around seventy routes in all. Each route is ranked for difficulty as “beginner,” “intermediate,” or “advanced.” Detailed maps and vivid photographs by the author complete the package. "Kayaking the Texas Coast is your must-have guidebook to the coastline and bays of the Lone Star State. Many miles of sea kayaking adventure are described, along with maps and discussion of the natural world encountered along the way. My copy will be riding in car and kayak with me. I look forward to seeing with my own eyes what the author has described and mapped."-- Natalie Wiest, founder and director, Galveston Bay Information
