I'm sure men are like that. Will, do you mean to say you don't agree? Carteret [absently, looking up and down columns of paper]. Yes, I daresay. Rachel. I know quite well what it means when a man says in that way [imitating his tone] Yes, I daresay, ' and goes on reading. It means you're not thinking of what I'm saying - you're thinking of nothing but the paper. Carteret [still looking up and down the columns]. Well, there are very interesting things in the paper. Rachel. Of course there are. And it's still more interesting trying to guess which of them are true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little American History Plays, for Little Americans: A Dramatic Reader for Third and Fourth Grades You did not need to have a real house or real dishes when you were playing house. Pieces of broken china, shells, or lea'ves were more fun than real dishes; and your house was on the doorstep, in the corner of the yard, or on a bench in the park. The Indian rode horseback on a broomstick, or the soldier carried the broomstick for a gun. Yet even the people who were going past on the street could tell in an instant what you were pretending to be. That was because you were acting so well. It was the way you rocked your baby that showed you were a mother, or the way you poured the make-believe tea that showed you were a lady. Every one knew that the boy who stood so straight with his arms folded was an Indian, and that the boy marching ahead of the column of boys was a captain with his soldiers. So acting is the way you do things - the way you stand, or talk, or walk, or move your arms and head. It is not what you wear or what you use in your hands. The plays in this book are to be acted in the school room. What a fine stage the schoolroom is! The desks are rows of houses on streets, or they are seats for a Town Meeting, or the trees of a forest. The drawers in the bookcase are fine steps to climb to a tower or an attic; the teacher's desk makes a breastwork or a blockhouse. Each class must use its own room and the things in it in its own way. Then the plays will be its own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Friend of the People: A Play in Four Acts To be sure, when a play fails it is not always easy to say why it failed. There is really no formula of success in play - writing. There is an instance of a play that bored a veteran London critic, which, according to his own confession, was just the sort of play that he had been always reviling people for not writing, managers for not producing, critics for not praising. He owned that it was a sincere pre sentment of actual life; that the characters were alive, well drawn and had the value of types; that it was full of food for reflection and innocent of theatrical effects. Yet it made him long to be amused and excited, and he couldn't tell why it failed to interest him with all its facts and ideas. The explanation probably is that the good qualities of the play were wholly negative. The author had mastered the decalogue of prohibitions, but neglected the organic form of emotion which stimulates feel ing as well as thought. Obviously positive merit is better than the negative kind, but yet few of us have the genius that would justify us in defying the seven devils of the theatre. Hence the importance of considering objections from high sources, objec tions not to be found in textbooks on technique or made obvious by object lessons on the stage itself, and therefore unknown to the average novice of the drama.
