Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Book excerpt: John Allen's discussion of Judaism dates to 1816; for many years, it was the authoritative history of the Jews from the time of Abraham through to the modern day. When sourcing the information necessary for this account, the author was discerning and meticulous: the history of the Jews is a topic of enormous depth and scope, requiring the use of holy books and written records often centuries or millennia old. Principally he examines the Holy Bible, and in particular the pertinent Old Testament texts, plus the holy books of the Jews such as the Kabbalah and Talmud. Other more esoteric sources include the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Prayer Book. Each chapter of Modern Judaism includes numerous notes, elaborating further and list the relevant passages. Many wide-ranging aspects of Jewish life are covered; such as how to manage births, marriages, deaths, the preparation of food and the care of pregnant women. The ancient temple and its precepts are extensively narrated, that readers comprehend how the Jewish faith changed and evolved as the centuries passed, with rabbis across the ages contributing to the written lore. This reprint reproduces the tables and Hebrew script of the expanded second edition, which was first published in 1830.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights movement was arguably the most successful social movement in American history. In a provocative new assessment of its success, David Chappell argues that the story of civil rights is not a story of the ultimate triumph of liberal ideas after decades of gradual progress. Rather, it is a story of the power of religious tradition. Chappell reconsiders the intellectual roots of civil rights reform, showing how northern liberals' faith in the power of human reason to overcome prejudice was at odds with the movement's goal of immediate change. Even when liberals sincerely wanted change, they recognized that they could not necessarily inspire others to unite and fight for it. But the prophetic tradition of the Old Testament--sometimes translated into secular language--drove African American activists to unprecedented solidarity and self-sacrifice. Martin Luther King Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, James Lawson, Modjeska Simkins, and other black leaders believed, as the Hebrew prophets believed, that they had to stand apart from society and instigate dramatic changes to force an unwilling world to abandon its sinful ways. Their impassioned campaign to stamp out "the sin of segregation" brought the vitality of a religious revival to their cause. Meanwhile, segregationists found little support within their white southern religious denominations. Although segregationists outvoted and outgunned black integrationists, the segregationists lost, Chappell concludes, largely because they did not have a religious commitment to their cause.

Astute preacher Leonora Tisdale considers these vexing questions while providing guidance and encouragement to pastors who want to recommit themselves to the task of prophetic witness. With a keen sensitivity to pastoral contexts, Tisdale's work is full of helpful suggestions and examples to help pastors structure and preach prophetic sermons, considered by many to be one of the most difficult tasks pastors are called to undertake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to identify, evaluate, and refine your approach to forming theological conclusions based on the biblical text. The Bible has long served as the standard for Christian practice, yet believers still disagree on how biblical passages should be interpreted and applied. Only when readers fully understand the constructs that inform their process of moving from Scripture to theology--and those of others--can Christians fully evaluate teachings that claim to be "biblical." In this book--part of the Counterpoints series--scholars who affirm an inspired Bible, relevant and authoritative for every era, present models they consider most faithful to Scripture Walter C. Kaiser, Jr.: Principlizing Model Daniel M. Doriani: Redemptive-Historical Model Kevin J. Vanhoozer: Drama-of-Redemption Model William J. Webb: Redemptive-Movement Model Each position receives critiques from the proponents of the other views. Moreover, due to the far-reaching implications this topic holds for biblical studies, theology, and church teaching, this book includes three additional reflections by Christopher J. H. Wright, Mark L. Strauss, and Al Wolters on the theological and practical interpretation of biblical texts. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Cathleen Kaveny focuses on a powerful stream of religious discourse in American political speech: the Biblical rhetoric of prophetic indictment. It can be strong medicine against threats to the body politic, she shows, but used injudiciously it does more harm than good.

Accordingly, Ethical Issues that Matter enlarges the methodological discussion among ethicists and theologians by adopting the landscape of a mountain as a useful metaphor for racism. On a practical level, Ethical Issues that Matter is about the agonizing struggle to understand and to dismantle the mountain of racism in American society. According to the author, to do so would undoubtedly enhance the meaning and diversity of the Christian moral life.

Book excerpt: A comparison of the real versus the counterfeit of a much neglected Bible teaching that has been ignored, rejected, and corrupted within Christianity - the gift of prophecy.Jesus gave repeated warning about false prophets, thus emphasizing a counterfeit of a genuine gift. (Matthew 7:15, 16; 24:11, 24) This subject is so vital that the apostle Paul admonished: "Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). "Beloved, believe not every spirit" is the apostle John's admonition, "but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). Is the gift of prophecy to be found in the church today? How are we to try or test one thought to possess this gift? How can one tell the true from the false? The Bible speaks decisively on this subject and gives several tests by which one can tell a true prophet from a false one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Channels of Prophecy is a cross-cultural study. It argues that prophetic intermediation is a widespread phenomenon in ancient and modern cultures, and proposes a way of identifying and describing the underlying similarity among intermediaries. It discusses the nature of prophetic authority and the function of "miracles" performed by prophets. It suggests that divination may be viewed as one type of prophetic intermediation and that prophecy must be presumed to occur down to the present. Finally, it reflects on how one might evaluate the prophetic claims made about a variety of persons in contemporary America. -- Book Jacket.
