Book excerpt: Newlyweds Jeff and Beth Alt could not be more different. Jeff, an avid hiker, prefers long, exhausting thru-hikes and sleeping under a canopy of stars. Beth, on the other hand, prefers hotels, hot showers, and ending the day in a warm, clean bed. But when Beth's brother dies tragically by suicide, Jeff convinces Beth to join him on a 218-mile hike along the John Muir Trail to honor her brother's memory and spread awareness about depression. Their journey is never short of surprises, and they encounter everything from menacing bears, lightning bolts, and mountain lions to food shortages and altitude sickness. But as they pass through three national parks—Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Park—including the highest mountain in the contiguous United States, Mt. Whitney, Beth discovers the joys, trials, and extraordinary beauty of exploring nature with just a backpack to your name. A Hike for Mike, Four Boots One Journey is a heartwarming, humorous tale of one couple's adventurous journey to healing, rediscovering nature, and falling more in love with each other every step of the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published as an award-winning paperback: A Hike for Mike. Jeff Alt takes you along on an entertaining adventure on the John Muir Trail with his new wife, Beth. With dust still on his boots from his 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail journey, Jeff convinces Beth, a woman who prefers hotels, hot showers and warm beds, to chuck her domesticated ways and walk the entire John Muir Trail (JMT). The JMT is over 218-miles of rugged remote mountain terrain, traversing three national parks, including the summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. Jeff is excited that he has finally persuaded his wife to go completely out of her comfort zone and attempt a journey that even seasoned hikers find extremely difficult. When Beth's brother tragically dies by suicide, Jeff feels compelled to take his wife on a hike. He assures her this journey would do her some good. To convince Beth to go on the hike, Jeff shows her some stunning photos of the John Muir Trail (JMT). He highlights pictures of lakes, which Beth loves, and carefully leaves out the word "glacial" when describing the water temperature. They hike as a depression awareness campaign in memory of Beth's brother. Their breathtaking scenic hike is riddled with adventure, humor and inspiration. From the moment they set foot on the trail, the fast paced adventure begins with menacing bears, lightning bolts, a mountain rescue, the constant threat of mountain lions, food shortages, fascinating characters and altitude sickness. The further they travel down the trail, the more Beth and Jeff discover things they never knew about each other. Initially, Jeff is nervous as to how Beth will adapt to carrying everything on her back, sleeping on the ground, and bathing in ice-cold mountain streams. When Beth debones a freshly cooked trout with her teeth, too hungry to wait for her husband to finish preparing the meal; and later in the evening, unable to take the trail grime encapsulating her body, she jumps into a lake, cold enough to chill beer; Jeff realizes that Beth has become a nomadic survivor. Above 10,000 feet, they discover that Beth can handle the thin air better than Jeff. Not only does Beth complete the expedition, she discovers the joys of backpacking with her husband. They emerge from the trail rejuvenated and still happily married.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 22, 2004, Lieutenant David Uthlaut received orders from Khost, Afghanistan, that his platoon was to leave the town of Magarah and "have boots on the ground before dark" in Manah, a small village on the border of Pakistan. It was an order the young lieutenant protested vehemently, but the commanders at the Tactical Command Center disregarded his objections. Uthlaut split his platoon into two serials, with serial one traveling northwest to Manah and serial two towing a broken Humvee north toward the Khost highway. By nightfall, Uthlaut and his radio operator were seriously wounded, and an Afghan militia soldier and a U.S. soldier were dead. The American soldier was Pat Tillman. The Tillman family was originally informed that Pat, who had given up a professional football career to serve his country, had been shot in the head while getting out of a vehicle. At his memorial service twelve days later, they were told that he was killed while running up a hill in pursuit of the enemy. He was awarded a Silver Star for his courageous actions. A month and two days after his death, the family learned that Pat had been shot three times in the head by his own troops in a "friendly fire" incident. Seven months after Pat's death, the Tillmans requested an investigation. Boots on the Ground by Dusk is a chronicle of their efforts to ascertain the true circumstances of Pat's death and the reasons why the Army gave the family and the public a false story. Woven into the account are valuable and respectful memories of Pat Tillman as a son, brother, husband, friend, and teammate, in the hope that the reader will better comprehend what is really lost when our sons and daughters are killed or maimed in war. In the course of three and a half years, there have been six investigations, several inquiries, and two Congressional hearings. The Tillmans are still awaiting an outcome.

Book excerpt: For the first time since 1984, we have a new edition of the classic book that Field & Stream called “the Hiker’s Bible.” For this version, the celebrated writer and hiker Colin Fletcher has taken on a coauthor, Chip Rawlins, himself an avid outdoorsman and a poet from Wyoming. Together, they have made this fourth edition of The Complete Walker the most informative, entertaining, and thorough version yet. The eighteen years since the publication of The Complete Walker III have seen revolutionary changes in hiking and camping equipment: developments in waterproofing technology, smaller and more durable stoves, lighter boots, more manageable tents, and a wider array of food options. The equipment recommendations are therefore not merely revised and tweaked, but completely revamped. During these two decades we have also seen a deepening of environmental consciousness. Not only has backpacking become more popular, but a whole ethic of responsible outdoorsmanship has emerged. In this book the authors confidently lead us through these technological, ethical, and spiritual changes. Fletcher and Rawlins’s thorough appraisal and recommendation of equipment begins with a “Ground Plan,” a discussion of general hiking preparedness. How much to bring? What are the ideal clothes, food, boots, and tents for your trip? They evaluate each of these variables in detail—including open, honest critiques and endorsements of brand-name equipment. Their equipment searches are exhaustive; they talk in detail about everything from socks to freeze-dried trail curries. They end as they began, with a philosophical and literary disquisition on the reasons to walk, capped off with a delightful collection of quotes about walking and the outdoor life. After a thoughtful and painstaking analysis of hiking gear from hats to boots, from longjohns to tent flaps, they remind us that ultimately hiking is about the experience of being outdoors and seeing the green world anew. Like its predecessors, The Complete Walker IV is an essential purchase for anyone captivated by the outdoor life.

When George Wickham speaks these words to an impressionable Elizabeth Bennet, she can have no idea how true they will turn out to be. Stronger Even than Pride, Gail McEwen's latest novel, explores whether love can survive the biggest obstacles that Fate and a most ruinous stubbornness-can conjure up to separate two people destined to be together. After Elizabeth refuses to read the faithful narrative of Darcy's dealings with Mr Wickham, this Pride and Prejudice variation takes an unexpected turn when she chooses to exonerate the wrong man. Events quickly spiral out of control, and Fitzwilliam Darcy is forced to watch helplessly as the woman he loves slips further and further from his grasp. Can there be a happily ever after for them? Can a love, stronger than pride, redeem even the worst mistakes?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For seventeen-year-old high school dropout Jim Bathurst, the Marine Corps’s reputation for making men out of boys was something he desperately needed when he enlisted in March of 1958. What began as a four-year hitch lasted nearly thirty-six years and included an interesting assortment of duty stations and assignments as both enlisted and officer. We’ll All Die As Marines narrates a story about a young, free-spirited kid from Dundalk, Maryland, and how the Corps captured his body, mind, and spirit. Slowly, but persistently, the Corps transformed him into someone whose first love would forever be the United States Marine Corps. It documents not only his leadership, service, and training but also regales many tales of his fellow Marines that will have the reader laughing, cheering, and at times crying. In this memoir, Bathurst reveals that for him—a former DI who was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, Purple Heart, and a combat commission to second lieutenant—the Corps was not a job, a career, or even a profession; it was—and still is—a way of life.
