Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every man-made structure is supported on foundations. Dynamic development of pile technologies, observed in recent years, presents a serious challenge for the participants of the construction process: it is inevitable to ensure quality control of running works or acceptance investigation of piles and columns made in new, and often not yet described by any standards, technologies. And Pile Integrity Test refers to a qualitative evaluation of the physical dimensions, continuity of a pile, and consistency of the pile material. The discipline of pile integrity testing, born in Europe in the 1960s, uses non-destructive testing technologies to expose those defects before they can cause any damage. Several methods have been developed over the past few decades in order to evaluate the integrity of piles and all are inside this book. It presents the testing methods available to clients, civil engineers, and contractors. Each method is explained in detail with its theoretical background, the hardware and software used, and the analysis of the test results. Each chapter concludes with a brief evaluation of the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Pile integrity testing is an exciting evolving branch of civil engineering and this book will be modified and re-written to cover new developments. Buy the book now/

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nondestructive Testing involves the use of methods such as wave propagation, electromagnetism, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity to test structural integrity and thereby allow nondestructive assessment of structures and the possibility of structural failures before they occur. Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations covers different techniques designed to provide information about the integrity and quality of the material that makes up a deep foundation. Nondestructive Testing methods are used at all stages of a structure's life - from new construction quality control to residual lifetime prediction, and even during the monitoring of demolition. In addition, Nondestructive Testing is being increasingly specified in deep foundation projects, though often without a good understanding of its limitations and with the result that methods are often misused. In order to be able to specify an appropriate method, or to recognize an inappropriate specification, it is necessary for the engineer, specifier and/or contractor to understand the capabilities and limitations of each of the methods currently in use. Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations: Describes the most commonly used deep foundation construction techniques, including typical use of material Provides a brief history of the development of commercially available nondestructive methods Summarises each method's capabilities and limitations Acts as a one stop reference drawing together resources only previously available in conference proceedings and journal papers This manual will prove to be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of all practitioners in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering and architecture. It will also provide a valuable insight into this highly technical field for university researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive guide to the design of foundations for tall buildings. After a general review of the characteristics of tall buildings, various foundation options are discussed followed by the general principles of foundation design as applied to tall buildings. Considerable attention is paid to the methods of assessment of the geotechnical design parameters, as this is a critical component of the design process. A detailed treatment is then given to foundation design for various conditions, including ultimate stability, serviceability, ground movements, dynamic loadings and seismic loadings. Basement wall design is also addressed. The last part of the book deals with pile load testing and foundation performance measurement, and finally, the description of a number of case histories. A feature of the book is the emphasis it places on the various stages of foundation design: preliminary, detailed and final, and the presentation of a number of relevant methods of design associated with each stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rapid Load Test (RLT), developed to determine the initial stiffness and bearing capacity, is an economical and practical alternative to a Static Load Test (SLT). The broad application of RLT, however, was hampered by uncertainty about the interpretation of the test results. This book offers clear guidance on the available analysis techniques and their reliability. The guidelines were related to an international standard that is drawn up by CEN and can be used in two ways: Straightforward interpretation of test results, chapters 1-3 Interpretation with additional background information about the possibilities and limitations, chapters 4-8 The guidelines were drawn up by the Dutch CUR-committee on rapid load testing on piles. Chapters 1 and 2 deal with the practical execution of the test and the presentation of the results. Chapter 3 gives a general overview of existing interpretation methods and refers to step-by-step descriptions of the two advised interpretation methods. The aspects that are important for the interpretation are discussed in chapter 4, also showing that the inertia of the pile should be taken into account. In clay soil the rate effect (the dependency of strength and stiffness on loading rate) is also of importance, whereas in sand and silt the generation of pore water pressures during an RLT plays a role. The velocity of the RLT is such that the reaction of sand and silt might be considered as partially drained. These guidelines indicate how these effects can be compensated to obtain the static resistance in the final results. Chapter 5 presents two interpretation methods (a method for piles in sand, gravel, silt and piles on rock and a method for piles in clay). For practical use, the methods are described in a step-by-step scheme in an appendix.
