Book excerpt: Found: The Rolling Stones presents a series of never-before-seen snapshots of The Rolling Stones on a 1965 tour through Savannah, Georgia and Clearwater, Florida. Found in an unmarked box at a flea market in Southern California by musician and art collector Lauren White, these rare candid images of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and founding member and road manager, Ian Stewart, capture the band--on the brink of global superstardom--relaxed and unguarded. On tour in North America in the spring of 1965, the young band was playing YMCA auditoriums and college gymnasiums in support of their third album, The Rolling Stones, Now!, and still trying to set themselves apart from the scores of other bands emerging out of Britain at the time. An additional handful of snapshots (found in the same box) appear to be from a year or two later, with the band in full rock-star mode. Dilettante gallery in Los Angeles showed the photographs for the first time after their discovery, but despite considerable press attention, the photographer responsible for these remarkable images still has not emerged. Some have speculated that it could be Keith Richards, since he appears in only one of the 23 photographs. White has her own suspicions: "My female intuition says that it was a girl. If you look at the photos, they look very vulnerable ... I don't think that a guy could evoke that kind of expression." This key moment in the band's history was recently chronicled in the documentary The Rolling Stones: Charlie Is My Darling--Ireland 1965 (2012), filmed during another tour that same year. The cache of photographs in Found: The Rolling Stones is a rare discovery and a thrilling piece of rock-and-roll history, but also an intimate, fresh look at five faces that were soon to become iconic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 Mick Jagger was a bright, well-scrubbed boy (planning a career in the civil service), while Keith Richards was learning how to smoke and to swivel a six-shooter. Add the mercurial Brian Jones (who'd been effectively run out of Cheltenham for theft, multiple impregnations and playing blues guitar) and the wryly opinionated Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, and the potential was obvious. During the 1960s and 70s the Rolling Stones were the polarising figures in Britain, admired in some quarters for their flamboyance, creativity and salacious lifestyles, and reviled elsewhere for the same reasons. Confidently expected never to reach 30 they are now approaching their seventies and, in 2012, will have been together for 50 years. In The Rolling Stones, Christopher Sandford tells thehuman drama at the centre of the Rolling Stones story. Sandford has carried out interviews with those close to the Stones, family members (including Mick's parents), the group's fans and contemporaries - even examined their previously unreleased FBI files. Like no other book before The Rolling Stoneswill make sense of the rich brew of clever invention and opportunism, of talent, good fortune, insecurity, self-destructiveness, and of drugs, sex and other excess, that made the Stones who they are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age sixteen, Bill German began publishing a Rolling Stones fanzine out of his bedroom in Brooklyn. And when he presented an issue to the band on a street in New York, he obviously made an impression: before he knew it, the Stones had hired him to document their career, inviting him in to the studio and to their private jam sessions. He traveled the world with them, stayed at their homes, and, for almost two decades, witnessed their wild parties and nasty feuds. Yet through it all, he never lost his identity as that “nice boy from Brooklyn.” Under Their Thumb is a fish-out-of-water tale about a fan who wanted to know everything about his favorite rock group—and suddenly learned too much. This updated edition, published to mark the Stones’ sixtieth anniversary, features forty new pages of text and more than thirty never-before-seen photos.

And competed with the Beatles to top the charts? That's right, just one: the Rolling Stones. They formed in the early 1960s, survived heavy metal and then punk's popularity in the 1970s and 1980s and they kept on rockin' through the turn of the century. Treasures of the Rolling Stones, an unofficial publication, tells the story of one of the biggest acts in popular music history in words, photographs, and in beautifully reproduced rare facsimile memorabilia.
