Book Synopsis Fouled Away by : Clifton Blue Parker
Download or read book Fouled Away written by Clifton Blue Parker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hundred and ninety-one. Mention the number anywhere near a ballpark and before you can ask who or what, fans will almost certainly shape their lips with a single word: Wilson. They'll tell you Hack Wilson, a burly, bull-necked outfielder who roamed Wrigley Field in the 1920s and 1930s, was the man who drove in 191 runs in 1930--more than most players had hits. A few of them will know that in 1929, Wilson racked up 159 RBI and hit 39 home runs. Still fewer might be able to tell you that for the four seasons 1927-1930, the slugger hit no fewer than 30 home runs a season and drove home no fewer than 120. But you are unlikely to find more than a handful of fans who know how the Cub great's career came to an end. Or when. Or why. The heir apparent to Ruth's title of world-beater, Wilson was a star by his late 20s and a record setter by 30. But he was also an alcoholic who was as practiced at swinging his fists as he was his bat. By his early 30s his days as a full-time player were behind him, and by 48 he was dead; his son refused to claim the body. This biography examines the turbulent life and career of one of the most dominant short-stint powerhitters ever to pull on a uniform. From Wilson's early career as a steelworker, through his time as the beloved ballplayer and icon for the City of Big Shoulders to his days as a down-on-his-luck baseball washout and itinerant laborer, an unflinching look at this Hall of Famer is provided.
Download or read book Foul Trouble written by John Feinstein and published by Ember. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling sportswriter John Feinstein exposes the big money and back-room deals that pervade college-basketball recruiting in this fast-break young adult novel. Terrell Jamerson is the #1 high school basketball player in the country. His team is poised to win State, top colleges are lining up to give him scholarships, and everyone says he could play in the NBA tomorrow. But it only takes one false step to lose everything. Danny Wilcox is Terrell’s best friend and teammate, and a top prospect himself, but these days it seems like everyone wants to get close to Terrell: the sneaker guys, the money managers, the college boosters. They show up offering fast cars, hot girls, and cold, hard cash. They say they just want to help, but their kind of help could get Terrell disqualified. Danny and Terrell better keep their eyes on the ball if they hope to last the season. John Feinstein has been praised as “the best writer of sports books in America today” (The Boston Globe), and he proves it again in this fast-paced novel. “Thorough and suspenseful; a must-read for those interested in basketball and the dealings surrounding the sport.” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred

Download or read book Brian Honyouti written by Zena Pearlstone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Hopi carver Brian Honyouti (1947-2016) was deeply embedded in his culture and produced ritual artworks throughout his life, he nevertheless also created unique commercial artworks. The latter, the focus of this volume, increasingly diverged from the world view embodied in Hopi art, ceremony, and philosophy to become a new form of storytelling. While it is unlikely that anyone familiar with Hopi carvings (dolls) would look to Honyoutis artworks expecting to unearth political, social, or environmental truths and circumstances, these are, nonetheless, the messages he determined to convey. In Brian Honyouti: Hopi Carver, art historian Zena Pearlstone explores the ideas Honyouti sought to communicate through his work. She examines as well how he transmitted them by turning a traditional art form, the carved representations of katsinas, into a modernistic critique of local Native American and global concerns. It is as a result of these universal implications that Honyoutis art will endure. Because Honyoutis attachment to Hopi culture was so profound, he veiled his critical reflections with humor and imagination to avoid exposing too much to public scrutiny. Feeling that there should be a public record of his intentions, however, he set aside many of his self-imposed limitations when he agreed to collaborate with Pearlstone. It was his hope that having made his intentions public for the first time, his work would be seen as a window into Hopi life as well as a reflection of contemporary mainstream American society.
Book Synopsis The Last Amateurs by : John Feinstein
Download or read book The Last Amateurs written by John Feinstein and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2008-11-16 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's favorite sportswriter takes readers on a thrilling and unforgettable journey into the world of college basketball in this national bestseller. Like millions who love college basketball, John Feinstein was first drawn to the game because of its intensity, speed and intelligence. Like many others, he felt that the vast sums of money involved in NCAA basketball had turned the sport into a division of the NBA, rather than the beloved amateur sport it once was. He went in search of college basketball played with the passion and integrity it once inspired, and found the Patriot League. As one of the NCAA's smallest leagues, none of these teams leaves college early to join the NBA and none of these coaches gets national recognition or endorsement contracts. The young men on these teams are playing for the love of the sport, of competition and of their schools. John Feinstein spent a season with these players, uncovering the drama of their daily lives and the passions that drive them to commit hundreds of hours to basketball even when there is no chance of a professional future. He offers a look at American sport at its purest.

Book Synopsis The Winning Tradition by : Bert Nelli
Download or read book The Winning Tradition written by Bert Nelli and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 1121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its 95-year history, the Kentucky Wildcats have won more games than any other college basketball team. Their winning percentage is the highest in the country. They share the record for the most 20-win seasons. They are second in all-time number one rankings. And despite no longer holding the record for winningest coach, Adolph Rupp will always be a giant in the pantheon of college basketball. When The Winning Tradition first appeared in 1984, it was the first complete history of the Wildcat basketball program. Bert Nelli pointed out that, contrary to the accepted mythology, Adolph Rupp arrived at a program already strong and storied. Nor did Rupp bring an entirely new style of play to the Bluegrass. Instead he adopted—and perfected—that of his predecessor, John Mauer. What Rupp did bring was an ability to charm the news media and a fierce determination to turn out winning teams, making him the undisputed "Baron of Basketball." This new and expanded edition of The Winning Tradition brings the history of Kentucky basketball up to date. Nelli and his son Steve turn the same unflinching gaze that characterized the honesty of the first edition on the scandals that marred Eddie Sutton's tenure, the return to glory under Rick Pitino, and a full accounting of Tubby Smith's history-making first year. The start of basketball season is welcomed in the Bluegrass with an unmatched enthusiasm and intensity. Each year brings a new team, new stars, and new glory. Other books have documented individual seasons, individual players, or individual coaches. But The Winning Tradition remains the only complete and authoritative history of the most celebrated college basketball program in the world. A book no fan can afford to be without, The Winning Tradition brings alive the agonies, frustrations, and glories of each season of Kentucky basketball, from the first team (fielded by women) to the surprising victory in the 1998 NCAA tournament.

Book Synopsis King of the Court by : Aram Goudsouzian
Download or read book King of the Court written by Aram Goudsouzian and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Russell was not the first African American to play professional basketball, but he was its first black superstar. From the moment he stepped onto the court of the Boston Garden in 1956, Russell began to transform the sport in a fundamental way, making him, more than any of his contemporaries, the Jackie Robinson of basketball. In King of the Court, Aram Goudsouzian provides a vivid and engrossing chronicle of the life and career of this brilliant champion and courageous racial pioneer. Russell’s leaping, wide-ranging defense altered the game’s texture. His teams provided models of racial integration in the 1950s and 1960s, and, in 1966, he became the first black coach of any major professional team sport. Yet, like no athlete before him, Russell challenged the politics of sport. Instead of displaying appreciative deference, he decried racist institutions, embraced his African roots, and challenged the nonviolent tenets of the civil rights movement. This beautifully written book—sophisticated, nuanced, and insightful—reveals a singular individual who expressed the dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. while echoing the warnings of Malcolm X.
