Book excerpt: Michel Foucault and Paul Veyne: the philosopher and the historian. Two major figures in the world of ideas, resisting all attempts at categorization. Two timeless thinkers who have long walked and fought together. In this short book Paul Veyne offers a fresh portrait of his friend and relaunches the debate about his ideas and legacy. ‘Foucault is not who you think he is’, writes Veyne; he stood neither on the left nor on the right and was frequently disowned by both. He was not so much a structuralist as a sceptic, an empiricist disciple of Montaigne, who never ceased in his work to reflect on 'truth games', on singular, constructed truths that belonged to their own time. A unique testimony by a scholar who knew Foucault well, this book succeeds brilliantly in grasping the core of his thought and in stripping away the confusions and misunderstandings that have so often characterized the interpretation of Foucault and his work.
Book Synopsis Une histoire au présent by : Collectif
Download or read book Une histoire au présent written by Collectif and published by CNRS Éditions via OpenEdition. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis History, Theory, Text by : Elizabeth A. Clark
Download or read book History, Theory, Text written by Elizabeth A. Clark and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work of sweeping erudition, one of our foremost historians of early Christianity considers a variety of theoretical critiques to examine the problems and opportunities posed by the ways in which history is written. Elizabeth Clark argues forcefully for a renewal of the study of premodern Western history through engagement with the kinds of critical methods that have transformed other humanities disciplines in recent decades. History, Theory, Text provides a user-friendly survey of crucial developments in nineteenth- and twentieth-century debates surrounding history, philosophy, and critical theory. Beginning with the "noble dream" of "history as it really was" in the works of Leopold von Ranke, Clark goes on to review Anglo-American philosophies of history, schools of twentieth-century historiography, structuralism, the debate over narrative history, the changing fate of the history of ideas, and the impact of interpretive anthropology and literary theory on current historical scholarship. In a concluding chapter she offers some practical case studies to illustrate how attending to theoretical considerations can illuminate the study of premodernity. Written with energy and clarity, History, Theory, Text is a clarion call to historians for richer and more imaginative use of contemporary theory.
Download or read book Foucault 2.0 written by Eric Paras and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dramatically new interpretation of the development of the thought of Michel Foucault, one of the 20th century's most influential thinkers. In this lucid and groundbreaking work, Eric Paras reveals that our understanding of the philosophy of Michel Foucault must be radically revised. Foucault's critical axes of power and knowledge -which purposefully eradicated the concept of free will- reappear as targets in his later work. Paras demonstrates the logic that led Foucault to move from a microphysics of power to an aesthetics of individual experience. He is the first to show a transformation that not only placed Foucault in opposition to the archaeological and genealogical positions for which he is renowned, but aligned him with some of his fiercest antagonists. Foucault 2.0 draws on the full range of the philosopher's writing and of the work of contemporaries who influenced, and sometimes vehemently opposed, his ideas. To fill the gaps in Foucault's published writings that have so far limited our conception of the arc of his thought, Paras analyzes the largely untapped trove of lectures Foucault delivered to teeming Paris audiences as Professor of the College de France for more than a decade. At the same time, Foucault 2.0 highlights the background against which Foucault carried out his most foundational work: the unrest of 1968, the prison reform movement of the early 1970s, and the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Carefully assembling the fragments of a thinker who remains but half-understood, Eric Paras has composed a seminal book, essential reading for novices and initiates alike.
Book Synopsis Kant, Foucault, and Forms of Experience by : Marc Djaballah
Download or read book Kant, Foucault, and Forms of Experience written by Marc Djaballah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the theoretical apparatus of Foucault’s early historical analyses as a version of Kantian criticism. In an initial textual exposition, the author attempts to distill a unified discursive practice from Kant’s theoretical writings, arguing for Foucault’s proximity to Kant on the basis of this reconstruction, by showing that his studies are modeled on this way of thinking. By recasting it in this framework, an unorthodox version of Foucault’s work is generated, one that is at odds with the tendency to emphasize a certain skepticism about the possibility of universal and necessary knowledge in his writings, and to mistake it for irrationalism and a hostility to the practice of theory. By drawing attention to the structural parallel between Foucault’s practice and Kantian criticism, this study belies this picture.
Book Synopsis Political Spiritualities by : Ruth Marshall
Download or read book Political Spiritualities written by Ruth Marshall and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an explosion of conversions to Pentecostalism over the past three decades, tens of millions of Nigerians now claim that “Jesus is the answer.” But if Jesus is the answer, what is the question? What led to the movement’s dramatic rise and how can we make sense of its social and political significance? In this ambitiously interdisciplinary study, Ruth Marshall draws on years of fieldwork and grapples with a host of important thinkers—including Foucault, Agamben, Arendt, and Benjamin—to answer these questions. To account for the movement’s success, Marshall explores how Pentecostalism presents the experience of being born again as a chance for Nigerians to realize the promises of political and religious salvation made during the colonial and postcolonial eras. Her astute analysis of this religious trend sheds light on Nigeria’s contemporary politics, postcolonial statecraft, and the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens coping with poverty, corruption, and inequality. Pentecostalism’s rise is truly global, and Political Spiritualities persuasively argues that Nigeria is a key case in this phenomenon while calling for new ways of thinking about the place of religion in contemporary politics.
Book Synopsis Michel Foucault by : Hubert L. Dreyfus
Download or read book Michel Foucault written by Hubert L. Dreyfus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1984. This book was born out of a disagreement among friends. Paul Rabinow, attending a seminar given in 1979 by Hubert Dreyfus and John Searle which concerned, among other things, Michel Foucault, objected to the characterization of Foucault as a typical " structuralist." This challenge stirred a discussion that led to the proposal of a joint article which soon became a medium-length book.
Download or read book Michel Foucault written by Rudi Visker and published by Verso. This book was released on 1995-07-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reception of Michel Foucault’s work has often been divided between two unsatisfactory alternatives. On the one had there are those who admire the detail of his concrete analysis, but wonder how the political and ethical commitments they seem to rely on can be justified. On the other, there are those who deny the need for normative foundations, but also find it difficult to explain what makes Foucault’s archaeologies and genealogies critical. Rudi Visker’s book is not only a lucid and elegant survey of Foucault’s corpus, from his early work on madness to the History of Sexuality, but also a major intervention in this debate. Reading Foucault against the Heideggarian backdrop to his work, Visker shows that Foucault’s target is not order as such, but rather the production of ordering systems which cannot acknowledge their own conditions of possibility. Exploring along the way such intriguing issues as the ambivalence of Foucault’s concepts of truth and power, and his philosophically provocative use of quotation marks, Visker portrays Foucault as neither relativist nor positivist, neither activist nor detached observer. Instead, Foucault emerges as the inventor of a new analysis of our modern mechanisms of control and exclusion: precisely of ‘genealogy as critique’.

Book Synopsis Michel Foucault and the Games of Truth by : H. Nilson
Download or read book Michel Foucault and the Games of Truth written by H. Nilson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book emphasises the affinity between Foucault's and Nietzsche's thought. Both philosophers tried to give clarity to modernity's arbitrary nature. Following on from Foucault's diagnostic enquiries into a 'History of Sexuality' and Nietzsche's appreciation of ancient culture, Nilson's study shows a practical consequence: the self-stylization of the individual. This aesthetical attitude replaces belief in metaphysical and even scientific meaning, thus leading to a philosophy-of-life. Nilson's book targets all those who wish to give their life a unique form.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Foucault by : Gary Gutting
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Foucault written by Gary Gutting and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-18 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Michel Foucault, philosophy was a way of questioning the allegedly necessary truths that underpin the practices and institutions of modern society. He carried this out in a series of deeply original and strikingly controversial studies on the origins of modern medical and social scientific disciplines. These studies have raised fundamental questions about the nature of human knowledge and its relation to power structures, and have become major topics of discussion throughout the humanities and social sciences. The essays in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of Foucault's major themes and texts, from his early work on madness through his history of sexuality. Special attention is also paid to thinkers and movements, from Kant through current feminist theory, that are particularly important for understanding his work and its impact. This revised edition contains five new essays and revisions of many others, and the extensive bibliography has been updated.
Book Synopsis Michel Foucault ou l'ouverture de l'histoire à la vérité by : Driss Bellahcene

This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Foucault's Politics of Philosophy by : Sandro Chignola
Download or read book Foucault's Politics of Philosophy written by Sandro Chignola and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oriented around the theme of a ‘politics of philosophy’, this book tracks the phases in which Foucault’s genealogy of power, law, and subjectivity was reorganized during the 14 years of his teaching at the College de France, as his focus shifted from sovereignty to governance. This theme, Sandro Chignola argues here, is the key to understanding four features of Foucault’s work over this period. First, it foregrounds its immediate political character. Second, it demonstrates that Foucault’s "Greek trip" also aims at a politics of the subject that is able to face the processes of the governmentalization of power. Third, it makes clear that the idea of the "government of the self" is – drawing on an ethics of intellectual responsibility that is Weberian in origin – an answer to the processes that, within neoliberal governance, produce the subject as an individual (as a consumer, a market agent, an entrepreneur, and so on). Fourth, the theme of a ‘politics of philosophy’ implies that Foucault’s research was never simply scholarly or neutral; but rather was characterized by a specific political position. Against recent interpretations that risk turning Foucault into a scholar, here then Foucault is re-presented as a key figure for jurisprudential and political-philosophical research.
Download or read book Michel Foucault written by David Owen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Foucault was one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers whose work has unsettled and transformed the field of social philosophy and the social sciences. The essays and articles selected for this volume are written by many of the most important of Foucault’s interpreters and interlocutors and show the range of Foucault’s influence and the debates it has provoked about Foucault’s own approaches and in relation to substantive areas of social philosophy and social science such as power, critique, enlightenment, law, governance, ethics and truthfulness. This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to, and overview of, the development of Foucault’s thought and demonstrates its enduring significance on our understanding of how we have become what we are.
