This study was guided using a qualitative method and exploratory research by design. There were two major questions used in this study, namely, the perceptions of foster parents regarding adolescents that have been placed in their home, and what type of knowledge or training would assist foster parents to care for an adolescent foster youth. A total of eight participants were recruited and interviewed for this study. Results indicated that many foster parents view the adolescents as a difficult population, but fostering them can be a rewarding experience. The findings also identified that foster parents feel that they do not receive adequate support or communication from county social workers. The key findings also suggest that foster parents may need more individual time to relax and that a local agency can provide support and assistance to the foster parent, as well as the adolescent. Training would be an important aspect to recruit potential foster parents, giving them tools to deal with the possible difficulties that may arise when dealing with problem behaviors.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to survey adolescents (age 12-18 years) who had been in foster family care six months or more to determine what attitudes or values within a foster home and what attitudes or perceptions held by the adolescents in care had assisted the adolescents to adapt successfully to foster care. A successful foster care experience was defined as one that did not disrupt the adolescent's developmental process. Four criteria were used in determining success: regular school attendance, maintenance of peer relationships, no arrests, no habitual substance abuse. the research design was an exploratory survey. There were ninety adolescents in foster family care. of this group, 42 consented to be interviewed. Three data gathering questionnaires were used--A chart/record review was done to provide a demographic profile of the successful and unsuccessful group. A foster parent questionnaire asked how the foster parents felt the adolescents were adjusting. the major questionnaire was used in interviewing the adolescents. This questionnaire was based on previous works done by Malcolm Bush, who assessed foster children's satisfaction of their care, and Rudolf Moos' attitude scales which have been used to survey human adaptation in other treatment environments. the three attitude scales that showed the greatest difference between the successful and unsuccessful adolescents were Recreation, Independence/Autonomy, and Support. Essentially, this meant that successful adolescents responded to structured environments where family activities were planned and occurred with regularity. They trusted and consulted with their foster parents about decisions and felt that their foster parents went out of their way to help them. Another interesting finding indicates that unsuccessful adolescents tended to blame themselves for being placed in foster care, while successful adolescents tended to blame others (parents, agency or situation). A final pattern that requires further research revealed that successful adolescents had their primary attachment to their foster families while unsuccessful adolescents maintained their primary attachment to their biological families.

Book excerpt: Foster youth in general tend to experience less success in terms of education compared to their non-foster youth peers. One possible explanation for this discrepancy is the fact that foster youth may lack the parental support that has been shown to be a very important factor in a youth's education. Parental support can be a very important motivating factor when deciding whether or not to pursue a post-secondary education. Majority of foster youth have been removed from their biological parents and placed into the care of foster parents. This qualitative study surveys foster parents to determine what they believe their role is when it comes to encouraging foster youth to pursue a post-secondary education. In addition, this study looks at the ways in which foster parents encourage their youth as well as any changes in the amount of encouragement they provide as a result of the AB 12 legislation. A total of seven surveys were collected from foster parents affiliated with a Foster Family Agency in the Central Valley. Results of this study show that a majority of the foster parents surveyed agree that it is part of their role to encourage their foster youth to pursue a post-secondary education after high school. Results also indicate that most of the encouragement that takes places between foster parents and foster youth takes the form of discussions around the topic of post-secondary education and that only about half of the participants reported that the AB 12 legislation had any effect on the amount of encouragement they provided to their foster youth.
