Book Synopsis Big Ideas in Macroeconomics by : Kartik B. Athreya
Download or read book Big Ideas in Macroeconomics written by Kartik B. Athreya and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-12-27 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible description of modern macroeconomics, and a defense of its policy relevance. Macroeconomists have been caricatured either as credulous savants in love with the beauty of their mathematical models or as free-market fundamentalists who admit no doubt as to the market's wisdom. In this book, Kartik Athreya draws a truer picture, offering a nontechnical description of prominent ideas and models in macroeconomics, and arguing for their value as interpretive tools as well as their policy relevance. Athreya deliberately leaves out the technical machinery, providing an essential guide to the sometimes abstract ideas that drive macroeconomists' research and practical policy advice. Athreya describes the main approach to macroeconomic model construction, the foundational Walrasian general-equilibrium framework, and its modern version, the Arrow-Debreu-McKenzie (ADM) model. In the heart of the book, Athreya shows how the Walrasian approach shapes and unifies much of modern macroeconomics. He details models central to ongoing macroeconomic analyses: the neoclassical and stochastic growth models, the standard incomplete-markets model, the overlapping-generations model, and the standard search model. Athreya's accessible primer traces the links between the views and policy advice of modern macroeconomists and their shared theoretical approach.
Download or read book Alchemists of Loss written by Kevin Dowd and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging look at how modern finance almost destroyed our global economy Over the last thirty years, capital markets have been restructured through the tenets of modern finance. This has been enormously profitable for the financial services sector. However, these innovations, coupled with unsound risk and regulatory practices have proved disastrous for the global economy. In a clear and accessible style, ex-investment banker and financial journalist Martin Hutchinson, and highly respected academic, Kevin Dowd show how modern finance combined with easy money threatened to bring down the world financial system. At the heart of the book is modern finance as a U.S. invention, the theories and practices associated with them, and the changes they made in business models and risk management on Wall Street and other major financial centers. Breaks down the events involved in the 2007-08 financial collapse Reveals how botched policy response made a bad situation worse Focuses on lessons that the practice of finance must learn from recent events The Alchemists of Loss will help you to understand how our financial system crashed and show you what it will take to make sure this won't happen again as we move forward.

Book Synopsis Globalisierung - Herausforderung an die Wirtschaftspolitik by : Renate Ohr
Download or read book Globalisierung - Herausforderung an die Wirtschaftspolitik written by Renate Ohr and published by Duncker & Humblot. This book was released on 2004 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Nine Lives of Neoliberalism by : Dieter Plehwe
Download or read book Nine Lives of Neoliberalism written by Dieter Plehwe and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Untangling the long history of neoliberalism Neoliberalism is dead. Again. Yet the philosophy of the free market and the strong state has an uncanny capacity to survive, and even thrive, in times of crisis. Understanding neoliberalism’s longevity and its latest permutation requires a more detailed understanding of its origins and development. This volume breaks with the caricature of neoliberalism as a simple, unvariegated belief in market fundamentalism and homo economicus. It shows how neoliberal thinkers perceived institutions from the family to the university, disagreed over issues from intellectual property rights and human behavior to social complexity and monetary order, and sought to win consent for their project through the creation of new honors, disciples, and networks. Far from a monolith, neoliberal thought is fractured and, occasionally, even at war with itself. We can begin to make sense of neoliberalism’s nine lives only by understanding its own tangled and complex history.

Book Synopsis Forests: Market and Intervention Failures by : Soren Wibe
Download or read book Forests: Market and Intervention Failures written by Soren Wibe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic value of forest. has long been recognized, but the ways in which that value is calculated and the management policies adopted in consequence have all too often resulted in overuse and irreversible destruction. This is spectacularly obvious around the Mediterranean basin, but it is also true in northern Europe. These five case studies, commissioned by the OECD, examine failures of forest management in Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany and Sweden. They look at both market and intervention policies and show how each can further the destruction of the forests, and they set out ways in which future policies can evade the mistakes of the past.
