Book excerpt: To improve knowledge of production rates of nitrogen oxides in turbulent diffusion flames in reaction-sheet regimes, an analytical investigation is made of the structure of a parabolic flamelet. The mixture-fraction field, scalar dissipation rate and gas velocity relative to the flamelet in the vortex are related to flame curvature at the parabolic tip. Flame structure for major species and temperature is described by rate-ratio asymptotics based on two-step and three-step reduced chemical-kinetic mechanisms. Production rates by prompt, thermal and nitrous-oxide mechanisms are obtained from one-step reduced-chemistry approximations that employ steady states for all reaction intermediaries. For sufficiently large streamwise separation distances between isoscalar surfaces, it is found that equilibrium conditions are closely approached near the flame tip, and the thermal mechanism dominates there, but the prompt mechanism always dominates in the wings, away from the tip, where the highest rates of scalar dissipation occur. Increasing the tip curvature increases the Peclet number and the prompt contribution while decreasing the thermal contribution. At 1 atm and ambient temperatures of 300 K, the prompt mechanism always dominates the total production rate in the parabolic flamelet, and, perhaps surprisingly, the rate of the nitrous-oxide mechanism is faster than that of the thermal mechanism and varies with the tip curvature and with scalar dissipation in the same manner as that of the prompt mechanism, different from that of the thermal mechanism. Conclusion reached is that Zel'dovich NO is relatively insignificant in hydrocarbon-air mixtures in reaction-sheet regimes.

Book excerpt: This book is a report on the numerical simulations of methane/air, methanol/air, and methyl formate/air under different flow configurations; homogeneous system, freely propagating flame, and diffusion flame. A detailed review on different types of fuels, chemical kinetics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) formation, chemical kinetic mechanisms for the oxidation of methane, methanol and methyl formate fuels, as well as the thermodynamic and transport properties of species are presented. A chapter on the governing equations for chemically reactive flows follows the literature review. The numerical solution methods for these flows are presented in a different chapter. Three chapters of results and discussions for the different flow configurations have been incorporated in the book. For each configuration, a comparison of nitrogen oxides concentration profiles and other radicals that are dominant in its formation is made. In addition, a plot of major and minor species concentration profiles and temperature profiles is shown. Finally, the sensitivity of CH and NO concentrations to the reactions in the mechanism is presented.

Book excerpt: "Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are pollutants emitted by various combustion processes that are subject to increasingly-stringent regulations due to their impact on human health and the environment. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has been shown to reduce NOx emissions by decreasing the oxygen concentration and, for a given heat release, reducing peak flame temperatures. Previous simulated combustion results (at a constant burning temperature) have demonstrated that EGR dilution may generate an NO minimization range governed by an increase in the prompt NO formation and a decrease in the thermal NO rate. However, this range is not predicted by all combustion models, thereby necessitating its experimental validation. This thesis conveys the constant burning temperature effects of EGR on NOx formation and the modelling performance of three thermochemical mechanisms (Gri-Mech 3.0, San-Diego 2005, and Combustion Science and Engineering). Using NO planar laser-induced fluorescence (NO-PLIF) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), constant burning temperature (1850K and 2000K) measurements of nitric oxide (NO-PLIF), temperature (NO-PLIF), and flame reactivity (PTV) were performed on methane-air flames with (and without) EGR dilution using a counterflow apparatus. These results confirmed the existence of the EGR-induced NO minimization range. However, this interesting engine design constraint was obscured by the high level of variability (factor of approx. 4) and uncertainty (up to 99%) found in the simulated NO profiles. A reduced set of reactions that may serve as a basis for the optimization process of the investigated NO submodels is also presented." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute: (ASI) «Pollutants Formation from Combustion. Formation Mechanisms and Impact on th th Atmospheric Chemistry» held in Maratea, Italy, from 13 to 26 september 1998. Preservation of the environment is of increasing concern in individual countries but also at continental or world scales. The structure of a NATO ASI which involve lecturers and participants of different nationalities was thought as especially well suited to address environmental issues. As combustion is known to substantially contribute to the damaging of the atmosphere, it was natural to concentrate the ASI program on reviewing the currently available knowledge of the formation mechanisms of the main pollutants liberated by combustion systems. In most situations, pollutants are present as trace components and their formation and removal is strongly conditioned by the chemical reactions initiated by fuel consumption. Therefore specific lectures were aimed at defining precisely the general properties of combustion chemistry for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels. Physical factors can strongly affect the combustion chemistry and their influence was also considered. An interesting peculiarity of this specific ASI was to complement the program with a substantial part concerned with the impact of the main combustion pollutants: NOx, aromatics, soot, VOCs, sulphur and chlorinated compounds, on atmospheric chemistry.
