Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning historian Mike Walling captures the essence of the Arctic Convoys of World War II. In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union in the largest offensive operation ever undertaken. Operation Barbarossa saw defeat after defeat heaped on the Soviet army. With Russia's forces left staggering under the strain and in desperate need of supplies, Britain and the United States launched an ambitious operation to resupply the Soviet Union using convoys sent through the Arctic. Their journey was punctuated by torpedo attacks in freezing conditions, Stuka dive bombers, naval gun fire, and weeks of total darkness in the Arctic winter, with ships disappearing below the waves weighed down by the ice and snow on their decks. Drawing on hundreds of oral histories from eyewitnesses and veterans of the convoys, plus original research into the Russian Navy archives at Murmansk, historian Michael G. Walling offers a fresh retelling of one of World War II's pivotal yet largely overlooked campaigns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first account in English of a much-overlooked, but important, First World War battlefront located in the mountains astride the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not well known in the West, the battles of Isonzo were nevertheless ferocious, and compiled a record of bloodletting that totaled over 1.75 million for both sides. In sharp contrast to claims that neither the Italian nor the Austrian armies were viable fighting forces, Schindler aims to bring the terrible sacrifices endured by both armies back to their rightful place in the history of 20th century Europe. The Habsburg Empire, he contends, lost the war for military and economic reasons rather than for political or ethnic ones. Schindler's account includes references to remarkable personalities such as Mussolini; Tito; Hemingway; Rommel, and the great maestro Toscanini. This Alpine war had profound historical consequences that included the creation of the Yugoslav state, the problem of a rump Austrian state looking to Germany for leadership, and the traumatic effects on a generation of young Italian men who swelled the ranks of the fascists. After nearly a century, Isonzo can assume its proper place in the ranks of the tragic Great War clashes, alongside Verdun, the Somme, and Passchendaele.

Book excerpt: "As Chairmen of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee since our first meeting in 1989, I felt the need to write this book. ...The Vietnam War was very unpopular. Many people would just like to forget it. For many people that is much easier said than done. This book is a means of conveying to those who weren't alive then, and a reminder to others, about the personal costs of that war and the story of our Memorial. The factual story about the Memorial follows the character sketches of each of the seventy-six men listed on it. ...These are men from Washtenaw County, killed or missing-in-action in that war."--Pages xi-xii.

Book excerpt: Sacrifices for Patriotism A Korean POW Remembers the Forgotten War is a narrative nonfiction recollection of the thirty-seven months Pharis Greene spent in captivity during the Korean War. His story includes his childhood memories and continues to his life today. In Korea, Pharis experienced horrific events. He witnessed his new commander, Colonel Martin, being cut in half by a Russian tank after engaging in a street fight with only a bazooka to defend himself. Less than forty yards separated Pharis from his higher-ranking officer, Second Lieutenant Thornton, when a North Korean madman dubbed "The Tiger" shot him in the back of the head on the infamous Death March. On numerous occasions, Pharis feared his life was over, including the three times he stood in front of a firing squad. Some fellow POWs have been quoted in Remembered Prisoners of a Forgotten War by Lewis H. Carlson and In Mortal Combat by John Toland. In contrast, Pharis shares his personal experiences from the beginning to the end of the Korean War and recalls how he endured the challenges and miraculously survived.

Book excerpt: In 1944 Major Marion “Ryan” McCown Jr., an earnest young Marine Corps pilot, came under attack by enemy fire and went down with his plane, lost to the dense jungle of Papua New Guinea. Some sixty years later, Major George Eyster V would find himself in the same sweltering and nearly impenetrable rain forest searching for evidence of MIAs. Coming from a long line of military officers dating back to the Revolutionary War, army service was Eyster’s family legacy. After a disillusioning tour of duty in Iraq and almost ending his army career, he accepts a posting to JPAC instead, an elite division whose sole mission is to bring all fallen soldiers home to the country for which they gave their lives. While Eyster’s search for McCown proves difficult, what emerges at the end of the unforgettable mission is an inspiring true tale of loss and redemption.

Book excerpt: This riveting volume dispels the sanitized history surrounding Native American practices toward their enemies that preceded the European exploration and colonization of North America. We abandon truth when we gloss over the clashes between Native Americans and Europeans, encounters of parties equally matched in barbarity, says George Franklin Feldman, We neglect true history when we hide the uniqueness of the varied cultures that evolved during the thousands of years before Europeans invaded North America. The research is impeccable, the writing sparkling, and the evidence incontrovertible: headhunting and cannibalism were practiced by many of the native peoples of North America.

Twenty years ago, this book could not have been published. In most universities, think tanks, and government research facilities, characterizing any type of murder as sacrificial was viewed at best as a secondary motive and at worst as junk science. - Dr. Dawn Perlmutter

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Dissertations on Sacrifices: The First, on All the Sacrifices The design of the following Dissertations is to defend the doctrine of Atonement for sin by the Death of Christ: - a doctrine which exhibits the only foundation of scriptural hope, has an essential connection with every other part of the gospel system, and extends its influence to all the duties and privileges of the Christian life. One irrefragable argument in support of this doctrine, arises from the correspondence and typical relation between, the priestly office and sacrifices under the Mosaic law, and the priesthood and sacrifice of Christ. This argument is here stated and enforced, in a manner at once clear, concise, comprehensive, and, as the Translator conceives, satisfactory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mosaic Sacrifices in Leviticus I. VIII All the Books of the Pentateuch are named by the Jews in accordance with their initial words. Thus, Genesis is called Bereschith, since it begins with that word; Exodus, Veelleh Shemoth; Numbers, Vayedabber; Deuteronomy, Elleh Haddebarim. The present book is called Vayikra. It is also called Thorah Cohenim, i.e., "The Law of the Priests," and so it is designated in the Arabic and Syriac Versions. In the Septuagint it is called Leuiticon and in our version Leviticus, since it treats of the sacrifices, the priesthood of Aaron, and various other rites and ceremonies, the due performance of which belonged strictly to the tribe of Levi, as being especially dedicated to the service of the sanctuary. The author of this Book was Moses: a fact which is not only admitted by the Jews, but which is confirmed by the authority of the New Testament in several places, e.g., compare S. Matthew viii. 4 with Lev. xiv. 4, 10: S. John viii. 5 with Lev. xx. 10, Deut. xxii. 22, etc. The Book of Leviticus may be divided into four principal parts: - I. - Various laws concerning the sacrifices to be offered by the Israelites, and certain other rites connected with them. E.g., the burnt offering: the meal offering: the peace offering: the sin offering: the trespass offering. Chap, i.-vii. II. - The Institution of the Aaronic priesthood. This part contains an account of the consecration of Aaron and his sons to their office: the first offerings of Aaron: the descent of fire from Heaven: the sin of Nadab and Abihu in offering strange fire, and their punishment. Chap, viii.-x. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Scott Fitzgerald (フィッツジェラルド) collection compiles the works on which the fame of one of the most fascinating writers of the twentieth century was built. Francis Scott Fitzgerald became a mouthpiece for ideas and expressed the spiritual moods bubbling amongst the young people during the 1920s. Fitzgerald, in the words of Amory from This Side of Paradise (1920), wrote that a generation had “grown up to find all God’s dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken”. Fitzgerald was the first to tell the world about the commencement of the “jazz age” with its carnival approach towards life- a lifestyle which he also followed. However, as a sensitive artist, he could not help but notice the dualistic nature of this philosophy. Fitzgerald's writing demonstrated that a life spent at the carnival would inevitably lead to bankruptcy. Fitzgerald often worked on multiple short stories simultaneously while writing his novels. Later, these stories were compiled. His relationship and love for his wife Zelda fueled much of his writing. Her diagnosis and hospitalization for schizophrenia in 1930 affected him greatly. In his later years, Fitzgerald worked in Hollywood on movie scripts. His last novel, The Last Tycoon, remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1940 and reflected his Hollywood experiences. THE NOVELS THIS SIDE OF PARADISE THE BEAUTIFUL AND DAMNED THE GREAT GATSBY TENDER IS THE NIGHT THE LOVE OF THE LAST TYCOON THE SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS FLAPPERS AND PHILOSOPHERS TALES FROM THE JAZZ AGE ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN TAPS AT REVEILLE THE PAT HOBBY STORIES MISCELLANEOUS STORIES THE PLAYS AND SCREENPLAYS THE POETRY THE NON-FICTION THE LETTERS
