Book excerpt: There is an alternate story of the life of Jesus. One the early Church fathers found so menacing they outlawed the books that documented it, ordered them burned, and threatened anyone found copying them with death. International bestselling authors and award-winning archaeologists Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear put more than thirty years of exhaustive research into this fascinating novel. In A.D. 325, Brother Barnabas is a student of the ancient holy texts. These books paint a portrait of Jesus that is radical, heretical, and irresistible. In the writings of Mary Magdalene, Phillip, and James, Barnabas finds clues to a secret he must protect at all costs. But the Ecumenical Council of Bishops has just declared his cherished books "a hotbed of manifold perversity." Emperor Constantine has decreed that the documents must be burned and that anyone found copying them will be executed as a heretic. Barnabas's monastery is attacked. Brother Barnabas flees with his trusted companions, but they are being followed, for the True Church cannot allow them to find the most sacred place on Earth. In fact, it will do anything to stop them... At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greed, frustrated love, traffic jams, infertility, politics, polygamy. These--together with depictions of traditional village life and the impact of colonialism made familiar to Western readers through Chinua Achebe's writing--are the stuff of Nigerian fiction. Bearing Witness examines this varied content and the determined people who, against all odds, write, publish, sell, and read novels in Africa's most populous nation. Drawing on interviews with Nigeria's writers, publishers, booksellers, and readers, surveys, and a careful reading of close to 500 Nigerian novels--from lightweight romances to literary masterpieces--Wendy Griswold explores how global cultural flows and local conflicts meet in the production and reception of fiction. She argues that Nigerian readers and writers form a reading class that unabashedly believes in progress, rationality, and the slow-but-inevitable rise of a reading culture. But they do so within a society that does not support their assumptions and does not trust literature, making them modernists in a country that is simultaneously premodern and postmodern. Without privacy, reliable electricity, political freedom, or even social toleration of bookworms, these Nigerians write and read political satires, formula romances, war stories, complex gender fiction, blood-and-sex crime capers, nostalgic portraits of village life, and profound explorations of how decent people get by amid urban chaos. Bearing Witness is an inventive and moving work of cultural sociology that may be the most comprehensive sociological analysis of a literary system ever written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting debut and a wonderful work of magical realism. Outside of time, the legendary storyteller and queen Sheherazade tells a little girl a story that has happened and is yet to happen, the rebirth of a story ancient and forgotten. Dreams of Maryam Tair: Blue Boots and Orange Blossoms brings readers to a Casablanca of myth and metaphor; curses and student revolts; and of witches, demons, djinns, and bureaucrats. Long after Biblical Adam set aside forgotten first-wife Lilith for Eve, star-crossed highborn Leila and scholar Adam catch the attention of the demons during Casablanca’s 1981 Bread Riots, and are disappeared. Months later—after centuries in the demons’ lair—Adam and Leila reunite at her parents’ once grand and now cursed house as shadows of themselves. But Leila returns from her ordeal pregnant with a special, singular child, one who draws out magical beings and has the power to change everything. A daughter she named Maryam, born with the scent of orange blossoms and a body filled with pain. Seamlessly interweaving a sprawling, multi-generational family tale with ancient creation stories, Mhani Alaoui’s cyclical half-myth half-reality story celebrates the radical power of disobedience.

Book excerpt: The untold story of generations of Middle Eastern freedom fighters—horsewomen who safeguarded an ancient breed of Caspian horse—and their efforts to defend their homelands from the Taliban and others seeking to destroy them. "A breathtaking book that revisits nearly one hundred years of Iranian history, highlighting the power and beauty of women who refuse to be subdued.” ―Alison Hawthorne Deming, author of A Woven World Book of Queens reaches back centuries to the Persian Empire and a woman disguised as a man, facing an invading army, protected only by light armor and the stallion she sat astride. Mahdavi draws a thread from past to present: from her fearless Iranian grandmother, who guided survivors of domestic violence to independent mountain colonies in Afghanistan where the women, led by a general named Mina, became their country’s first line of defense from marauding warlords. To the female warriors who helped train and breed the horses used by US Green Berets when they touched down in October 2001, with a mission but insufficient intelligence on the ground—women whose contributions were then forgotten. Pardis Mahdavi chases the legacy of Caspian horses and the women whose lives are saved by them, drawing on decades of research, newly-discovered diaries, and exclusive military sources. Among those intersecting stories is that of American Louise Firouz, who helped bring the breed back from the brink of extinction, connecting Virginia traders to British royals to the son of the Shah. Firouz’s life is forever changed when she meets Mahdavi’s own family, who run an unusual smuggling operation in addition to raising horses in a wild bid for freedom. Book of Queens is an epic tale of hidden women whose communal knowledge was instrumental in saving an animal as ancient as civilization, and who were the genesis of their own liberation.

Growing up in Iran, both refused to accept traditional Muslim mores, and dreamed of careers in literature and on the stage. Their lives changed abruptly when Pari was coerced by their father into marrying a wealthy and cruel suitor. Book excerpt: Yeshua with his father and brother go to Magdala as hired carpenters to repair boats. He is caught in the middle of a bloody massacre and is traumatised. It is a baptism of fire for him. He goes to a breakaway community in Qumran to reflect. The community’s main function is to collect the fragile fragments of scripture and copy them onto fresh parchments. He acquires an in-depth knowledge of the scriptures. He spends seven years there and is elected as leader, the Teacher of Righteousness. Yeshua visits a similar group in Alexandria, Egypt, called the Assayya. They specialise in healing. King Ashoka of India had sent emissaries to Egypt with Hindus and Buddhist monks who assimilate with the Assayyas. Yeshua learns a new way of meditating and the art of healing. Realizing that this idyllic hermitic way of life is but an escape from reality, Yeshua leaves to be among the common people. He walks among people living between poverty and destitution besieged by malnutrition, physical impairment, disease and sickness from which they know no medical remedy. They are also overburdened by taxation and debt while the rich and powerful live a different life. Yeshua addresses these issues with practical solutions. He urges the people to protest unjust taxation and not to listen blindly to all the teachings of the Temple incurring the wrath of the elite. People come to listen to him. Ten men and six women become his close followers. They set up a base camp on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and move around Galilee. King Herod who beheaded John the Baptist is after Yeshua. With his followers he leaves his territory and travels beyond Galilee to foreign lands where they meet people who worship different gods and practise religions condemned by Judaism. They meet merchants who have travelled the Silk Route and the Incense Route and dialogue with them on their beliefs. It is a religious and cultural shock for him and his followers. On returning to base camp Yeshua teaches his followers of the medicinal use of herbs and sends them on mission. Finally, they join a caravan to Jerusalem. They confront Caiaphas, the High Priest and Pontius Pilate who have conspired to steal money from the Temple treasury, the Qorban. Together with the Zealots they protest corruption and religious misguidance of the Temple. Yeshua is arrested, tried by the Sanhedrin and condemned to death. Since the Romans had withdrawn the use of capital punishment by the Sanhedrin, they take him to Pilate and accuse Yeshua of stirring up trouble against Roman control. Pilate says Ecce Homo and orders his crucifixion.
