Book excerpt: Every Day, Forever is a collection of letters written from a mother to her young daughter after her passing. Written in real time, the letters chronicle Mattocks’day-to-day journey during her first two years of grief. With grace and poise, Mattocks boldly refuses to accept that grief is a season of getting over pain, but instead insists grief is a season of getting used to it. As heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, the letters paint a picture that anyone who has experienced deep loss can find themselves in. Every Day, Forever serves as a powerful reminder for us all. That we can have hearts that are broken and still love. Have dreams that were shattered and still live. And we can be grateful for what we were given and still grieve for what we weren’t.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) remains one of the best examples of a labor union that traces its origins to radical anti-racist principles. Today, very few mainstream unions remain that were founded on militant, radical, and “anti-racist” principles. The ILWU remains the strongest port union in the United States, and its members are among the highest paid blue-collar union workers in the world. Drawing on in-depth interviews, archival oral histories research, and ethnographic observation, Solidarity Forever? highlights the struggle of a key group of Black and women leaders who fought for racial and gender equality in the ports of Southern California. The book argues that institutional and cultural forms of racial and gender inequality are embedded within US trade union locals leading to the following deleterious consequences for unions: (1) a proliferation of internal discrimination lawsuits within unions, which can cost the union International, or union local, potentially millions of dollars in legal fees and financial settlements thereby redistributing precious financial resources that could be spent on key activities related to making unions stronger from outside attacks; (2) an erosion of trust and solidarity among workers, the key values of any successful union, which ultimately undermines the radical democratic potential of unions and rank-and-file participation in union politics; and (3) the undermining of workers of color and women workers as full and equal participants in the labor movement. The future of organized labor in the United States could very well be determined by the ability of the labor movement, and labor unions in particular, to listen to those workers who have been relegated to the margins of the global economy—workers of color, immigrant workers, women workers, and all workers in the Global South.

The summer of '68 was riddled with violent civil rights demonstrations and antiwar protests. Amid the troubled times, another conflict brewed between two young people who struggled to beat the odds and save their love. Olivia Donotelo watched in alarm as the two-toned Plymouth pulled alongside the curb. Oh no! She wasn't ready to face him yet! Just home from a rejuvenating summer at the Jersey Shore, Olivia had mixed feelings about seeing Matthew again. Their ill-fated romance the year before had been doomed from the start, thanks to the devious actions of jealous friends and her strict Italian mother. Olivia had tried to cast him out of her heart, but memories of his strong arms and gentle kisses haunted her dreams. Matthew Langdon warily waited for Olivia to acknowledge him and hoped she would accept a ride home. Given their rocky relationship, he didn't know how receptive she would be. He hadn't kept his word about calling, but that didn't mean he hadn't thought about her-all summer long! Would she give him a chance to explain?

At twenty-six, Arabella did not have a typical family dynamic, nor a way to change the past. But she did have an inherited family restaurant, and a promise to God. A pledge to purity. No sooner has she settled into the planning and preparations of Rock Haven’s annual formal event, held in her family’s restaurant, Arabella receives an unexpected visit from a blue-eyed traveler, making his way to a small town in Iowa. The encounter draws Arabella’s emotions into his intrigue and charm. And charm he does. Now confronted with her grappling emotions, Arabella must choose which is more important to her—the promise she made to God? Her family’s business? Or, the stranger that has managed to captivate her heart?

Book excerpt: “The perfect summer read” (USA TODAY) begins with a shocking tragedy that results in three generations of the Adler family grappling with heartbreak, romance, and the weight of family secrets over the course of one summer. *A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice * One of USA TODAY’s “Best Books of 2020” * One of Good Morning America’s “25 Novels You'll Want to Read This Summer” * One of Parade’s “26 Best Books to Read This Summer” Atlantic City, 1934. Every summer, Esther and Joseph Adler rent their house out to vacationers escaping to “America’s Playground” and move into the small apartment above their bakery. Despite the cramped quarters, this is the apartment where they raised their two daughters, Fannie and Florence, and it always feels like home. Now, Florence has returned from college, determined to spend the summer training to swim the English Channel, and Fannie, pregnant again after recently losing a baby, is on bedrest for the duration of her pregnancy. After Joseph insists they take in a mysterious young woman whom he recently helped emigrate from Nazi Germany, the apartment is bursting at the seams. Esther only wants to keep her daughters close and safe but some matters are beyond her control: there’s Fannie’s risky pregnancy—not to mention her always-scheming husband, Isaac—and the fact that the handsome heir of a hotel notorious for its anti-Semitic policies, seems to be in love with Florence. When tragedy strikes, Esther makes the shocking decision to hide the truth—at least until Fannie’s baby is born—and pulls the family into an elaborate web of secret-keeping and lies, bringing long-buried tensions to the surface that reveal how quickly the act of protecting those we love can turn into betrayal. “Readers of Emma Straub and Curtis Sittenfeld will devour this richly drawn debut family saga” (Library Journal) that’s based on a true story and is a breathtaking portrayal of how the human spirit can endure—and even thrive—after tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a love story based on events that occurred in my life more than fifty years ago. Some of the names have been changed, and some events may have been diminished or embellished while recalling things that happened when writing the story. The story is a based on recollections of actual experiences I had. It is a story filled with discovery, joy, and the innocence of teenage years back in the fiftys. It also shows how those years became the building blocks of a lifetime. The motivation for writing this came from an extraordinary thing that happened to me in the Spring of 2006 that stirred my memory and caused me to recall with clarity what I had so long ago buried in my subconscious mind. I met a person who became a good friend, but more importantly she reawakened everything I had discovered in that one magical summer back in 1954. Looking back as an adult fifty years later made me realize that there is symmetry in life, but many people never take the time to see it. This all started for me when we returned from our Winter Condo in Boca Raton, Florida in April of 2006. As per my usual morning routine, I continued to awaken early and go over to Starbucks to sit and have my morning cup of Decaf Americano. Id sit there and read the Daily News, or the New York Times, and chat with some fascinating people I had met whod become friends in the several years since I retired. One particular April morning I came in and they had a new person in charge of the morning shift working there. From the moment I saw her I could not stop looking at her. There was something instantly so familiar about her, but I wasnt able to see exactly what it was initially. When I made the connection with what it was it hit me like a ton of bricks. After we were introduced we began chatting briefly, but the more we made small talk, the less I actually heard what she was saying as memories of my past flooded back. All of a sudden I was fifteen years old again. I knew then I had to sit down and somehow get this written. I also knew I would at some point; have to share this amazing story with her if or when I got to know her better. It was interesting recalling my early childhood, and the events that brought me to that wonderful summer of discovery, and falling in love for what I believed then to be the first and last time in my life. That summer held some of the keys to the person I would become as I grew up, and dealt with life at all ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, I was diagnosed and consequently had surgery for spinal stenosis. This condition forced me to spend more time at home. I became tired of watching the same reality shows over and over and began thinking of my own life. Over the course of three years I began to write down my memories and those of my sister Eleftheria. I soon realized it was quite the story. All the names, places and dates of this book are real and truthful. Every incident described in this book was witnessed by me or confirmed by members of my immediate or extended family. The horrible truth is that we lived in hellish indignation. After WWII and during the Greek Civil War, in many instances the hatred intensified and the fear took over. I witnessed fathers and sons turning on each other and even go as far as shooting one another. Everyone was dressed alike. One couldnt discern friend from foe. If you were asked a question and gave the wrong answer; you had better start praying. For 10 whole years we lived in a chaotic, dangerous and corrupted environment. I witnessed arson and death. I even saw people tortured with hot oil and slashings. All these experiences culminated into excruciating nightmares that have haunted and continue to haunt me all my life. This book is about the war and two families, the Papaioannou and the Kalogeras families, which battled hunger, sickness, resentment, immigration and death.
